What is needed is progressive book scanning so that these reference publications can be used more easily and by more people. Also once they are digitised searching becomes quick and easy. I would say that most would be past copywrite protection. There is also the fact that, once scanned, in the event of fire, flood or theft they are also then protected from loss. Ancestry seems to get all of the attention whereas a lot of these books do not appear on ancestry. People should go look to see what is in their Family History Libraires as there is life before and after Ancestry sitting there just screaming to be read. A really good suggestion but then copyright would come into it... Dear Ian and Edie and List, I have worried about this type of thing for a long time. In Tasmania you can go into LINC and give an author's name and all the books come up, but unless the title bears some likeness to the subject inside, it's a waste of time. Google helps but its not like the old days when you could just go through the subject shells at the Libraries. Most of the smaller books or A4 are now in Stack. Another problem that I have found is when someone is searching for a certain piece of history, they are inclined to only search through the old well known historian's books. Yes, you can't always go back to the original sources (but I still try to) In the past 20 years many good writers have written and added to these old history books but on most occasions you will still find the references go back fifty years and very few mention the more recent works. I don't know the answer, but it is worrying to those writers who put so much research into their books and for them not to be used, or even known about. The Crowther Library in the State Library in Hobart used to print all the news additions in the Family History Society Journal years ago and that was great, you knew within a few months what had been recently added to the Library. Sorry to be so long winded but it's a subject hard to explain in a few words.
