I am trying to find the denomination of the Holy Cross church in Mangana. Appreciate some help. Cheers Lyn VIC
Lyn. Found the following in a 1912 Examiner: [2/9/1912] The new Church of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart at Mangana will be solemnly blessed and dedicated by His Grace the Archbishop of Hobart on Sunday next, September 8, at 11 a.m. The Rev. Father MTorrell, M.S.H., will preach the occa sional sermon. Father Graham, who has charge of the extensive mission of which the little village of Mangana is a part, has spared no pains to make this church one of the prettiest in Tasmania. Built in reinforced concrete, it has, with furnishings, cost approximately £1000. Ur this sum over £G00 have been met. For the balance Father Graham confidently appeals to his friends and .sympathisers, and it is hoped he will meet with a generous response. Even the smallest donation will be thakfufly received and acknowledged by him. His address is The Presbytery, Fingal, Tasmania--[Advt.] On Fri, May 11, 2018 at 10:56 PM, Lyn Carruthers <[email protected]> wrote: > I am trying to find the denomination of the Holy Cross church in Mangana. > Appreciate some help. > Cheers > Lyn > VIC > > > _______________________________________________ > ------------------------------- > AUS-Tasmania Mailing List Website http://www.rootsweb.com/~austashs/ > Contact Admin [email protected] > Search the Archive > http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/search?path=AUS-Tasmania > > _______________________________________________ > Email preferences: http://bit.ly/rootswebpref > > Unsubscribe https://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/postorius/lists/ > [email protected]/ > > Archives: https://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/hyperkitty/list/ > [email protected]/ > > Privacy Statement: https://ancstry.me/2JWBOdY Terms and Conditions: > https://ancstry.me/2HDBym9 > > RootsWeb is funded and supported by Ancestry.com and our loyal RootsWeb > community >
Thank you Barry, I did come across quite a bit on the Catholic church in Mangana but nothing on Holy Cross. A pity such lovely churches have to be sold, let's hope the purchasers do not feel they have to pull them down. On my bucket list is owning the church here in Victoria that my GGGgrandparents were married in. It is privately owned now and the owners do not mind showing one through. I gather not all the Anglican church buildings in Tasmania are to be sold off. They will wait and see the uproar basically! But they have to pay the legal compensation for child abuse and.. better sell than expect everyone Anglican to pay say $1000 extra, in my opinion. -----Original Message----- From: Lyn Carruthers [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Saturday, 12 May 2018 2:49 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [AUS-Tas] Re: Mangana Thank you Barry, I did come across quite a bit on the Catholic church in Mangana but nothing on Holy Cross. Lyn, I have just found an address for the Fingal area Historical Society. I am certain they would be pleased to be able to confirm Mangana church details. I do hope that the current church at Mangana is not Anglican because they are in the process of a major sell off of their real estate Barry R. The Examiner of 12 February 1917, p.2, has a report about the Anglican Church at Mangana, Holy Cross Church. "Mangana. At a meeting of the members of the Anglican Church at Mangana, presided ever by the rector (Rev. Earle), Mr. Haywood was appointed minister's warden and treasurer, and Messrs. A. John and Tas. Yates people's wardens. The ladies also formed themselves into a guild, and will assist in working for the church. A fair is to be held; the proceeds are to the devoted to improving the Holy Cross Church." Hi Lyn 'If you search Trove there is a lot of info. Frances 9th May 1938 MANGANA ANGLICAN CHURCH Established Fifty Years The 50th anniversary occurred on May 3 of the establishment of the Anglican Church at Mangana, in the parish of Fingal. It was founded mainly as a; result of the work of the Rev. G. F.'.M; Fielding, who was appointed 'to the parish at the beginning of 1SS7. He extended the work of the church to Mangana and Mathinna, and his first' service at the former township was held In the State School , about April , that year. In a short time he had gathered together a faithful band of workers, and funds for the building of a church were obtained. By November nearly £100 was available, and a site having been procured from the Government, the construction of the first church was begun. Built of weatherboard, with iron roof, it was completed In about six months, and on May 3, 1888, lt was opened for Divine service, and dedicated to the Holy Cross by the then Bishop of Tasmania (the Rt. Rev. Dr. D. Fox Sandford). --- This email has been checked for viruses by Avast antivirus software. https://www.avast.com/antivirus
