Dear List I am looking for a man called Horace Cooley (not connected with the Coolies Hotel in Moonah) Horace was transported from Canada with the other Canadian Rebels to Hobart on the Buffalo in 1840. He was sent to Port Arthur for 2 years for attempting to escape. He received his T/L in 1844 and a Conditional Pardon in 1849. Cooley did not leave when most of the other Canadian’s left Tasmania. I found him when I was writing about Henry Woods at the Springs, Henry worked for him at the foot hills of Mt Wellington, building a track and taking out timber. This would have been in the early 1850s. Cooley applied for 1,500 aces of Crown Land in 1952. He seems to have married Mary Skinner in 1850, but from there I can find no trace of him. Did her leave and go to another part of Australia or even back to Canada? Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.
