I seem to have missed the original posted question relating to James Hugh DONOHOE. During the so called Maori wars, now known as the New Zealand Wars, ships were based at Australia station which was Sydney. The Biographical Index of Pukekohe 1850-1925 (Heather A Walden) lists a Hugh Donohoe along with Mary, Mary Jnr and Patrick. The date is 1865 and they were passengers on the Ganges. Reference is the Southern Cross (Auckland) newspaper and this may be found on New Zealand's free paperspast website. Bye Harriet
I did a fair amount of research into the NSW Corp (as they were known as then) When the NZ soldiers needed reinforcements in their battle against the Maori in the Waikato they called for reinforcement from Sydney. The enticement was land grants in return for the services of the NSW soldiers. I was researching one connections of my late grandfather and discovered he was part of the British contingent to NSW who had answered the NZ call. In return he was granted land in Invercargill and posted there as the Migration Officer for a time. Cheers, Ainslie.
