Dear All, I've recently discovered a "new" burial at the above church, now my home - here's the announcement, in the Mercury of 29 January 1878: "COOK. - On the 28th inst., at Old Beach, William Cook, aged 36. The funeral service will be read at the Wesleyan Chapel, at 3 o'clock THIS DAY (Tuesday)." William was married to Martha Ann Childs and they had two children, a son, William Henry Sunderland Cook, b. 1874, and a daughter, Florence Mary Cook, b. 1875. Sadly Martha Ann died in the New Norfolk Asylum 24 February 1884 - she'd been admitted by her father the previous December according to her case file, online at the Archives website. I have two questions about this family and hope someone can help. Firstly - where was Martha Ann buried after her death in 1884? Could she be buried here with her husband or were all burials held somewhere in New Norfolk? (William Cook's gravestone hasn't survived so I have no idea where he/they might be buried.) The next question is the fate of their daughter Florence Mary Cook - I have her brother's details and know who his descendants are but can't find a thing about Florence after her birth. Fingers crossed someone can help, and best wishes, Carol Brill, Briggs Road, Old Beach.
Carol If Martha Cook was a Catholic and was buried in New Norfolk you will never find her. The Catholic Cemetery records for New Norfolk have never been released. The Cemetery itself was bulldozed many years ago and the land is now being used for housing. The North Circle Public Cemetery at New Norfolk was opened after September 1883 and many of the Asylum inmates were buried there in unmarked graves many of which have not been accounted for and some have been reused. William Henry Sunderland Cook married Alice Emma Wheatley in Aug 1900 in Hobart. Alice was my wife's gg aunt. While the Catholic cemetery in New Norfolk was being described as derelict in the 1890s, a recent title search shows the property is still owned by the church. There are not any houses on it.
