Hi, Has anyone ever found what the crime was for these two ladies please. There is a lot written about this mother and daughter and Ann juniors husband John Cox, soldier on the "Pitt:", but what is missing is the crime and the records. I am happy to go after the records if they are not available I am presently putting the Cox family on my family treemaker. John Cox, Samuel and Mary Ann Lucas, Susan Cox and John Thomas Flood. Then the Flood family as their daughter Alice Caroline Flood married William Laing another line of the family. I would like to find the Trial account. Maybe there is someplace in NSW as they went to Port Jackson First, arriving 14th February 1792, "Pitt", then Norfolk Island before Van Diemans Land. I did send to the Archives Authroity of New South Wales 4th Feb 1985 they checked the 1811 Colonial Muster for Van Diemans Land and Norfork Island. Norfolk Island papers and the T.D Mutch Index to Births, marraiges and deaths and sent me the first six childrens births and baptisms. Nothing regarding the trial. So would be good if anyone is willing to share. I think this was more to do with John Cox than Ann Brooks though Ech of the children being Broks or Cox. thankyou for any help Edie McArthur
Hi everyone Can anyone tell me please, whether there's a database of settlers who employed convicts? LucyAnn
Edie, Don't know whether this is the right mother and daughter, but from the Derby Mercury:P- Anne Brookes (aged nineteen) for ftealing wearing apparel, to be transported 7 years, and her mother Anne Brookes, for receiving the fame, ditto 14 years. 31 March 1791 - Derby Mercury - Derby, Derbyshire, England David Scott. -----Original Message----- From: Edie - Email Address: eamca@bigpond.com Sent On: 30/05/2014 02:36 Sent To: aus-tasmania@rootsweb.com - Email Address: aus-tasmania@rootsweb.com subject: [AUS-Tas] Ann Brooks trns 7 years and her mother Ann Brooks 14years per the "Pitt" Hi, Has anyone ever found what the crime was for these two ladies please. There is an old toll cottage in New Town too, much refurbished. I think everybody has had odd experiences with this website. It is probably time for someone with time on their hands - or Rootsweb - to run a campaign with the Archives Office to open it up and make changes. The Archives Office probably doesn't have the money to do it, so it would need some volunteers to do the work. I'm in Sydney, so I can't, but someone in Hobart could. This is an invaluable resource, but as everyone has noticed, it is riddled with mistakes and speculation. Susan
Have had another look at TROVE, and it seems that the first Road Trusts may have been introduced in the mid-1840s, according to this article from the Examiner. http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/printArticlePdf/36240630/3?print=n The mention of tollbars is interesting. Tere are several old cottages round Launceston that used to be the residences for the toll-keepers. One is on High St, just north of Wentworth St. Judy
John, While I haven't down much research on early local government, most entities in Tasmania seem to have developed from Road Trusts. The term "Town Board" doesn't seem to have been used until the 1880s and disappeared in the 1920s. The two excerpts from the Mercury give an indication of the legislative basis, the constitution of the trusts, and the power of public persuasion - From The Mercury, Tuesday 25 August 1863, page 3 - "SUMMERLEAS ROAD DISTRICT. A meeting of rate-payers of the above-named district, and others interested, was held last evening at the Northumberland Inn, upper Macquarie-street, to take into consideration the propriety of urging upon the govern- ment the necessity of granting a sum of money for the completion of the Huon road, ..." From The Mercury, Tuesday 19 June 1866, page 1 - "QUEENBOROUGH ROAD TRUST. IN accordance with the 19th Section of "The Cross and Bye Hoads Act, 1860," I hereby notify that, at a Meeting at the Landholders of the District, held at Mr. Vince's Porter Hill Hotel, on Wenesday, 6th June, 1866, tbe following Landholders were elected Trustées of the Road District of Queenborough, in con- formity with the provisions of the amended Cross and Bye Roads Act, 1865 - ...." One of my ancestors was a member of both trusts as he was a rate-payer in both districts. I haven't noted any reference to Road Trusts before 1860. The rates were levied on land-owners as today, but were only spent on road maintenance. The government seems to have provided capital funds for new construction. Hello Listers After further searches in Trove and Google I believe "The Towns Boards Act 1891" answers the issues that I have. As context, I was trying to understand how the township of Beltana was excised in 1894 (from a local government context) from the Clarence Municipality and the Cambridge Road Trust. I believe I now understand the process and how the Beltana community established their own Town Board. Carol and all, Carol wrote At Port Arthur on January 21 1834 he was accused of "Obstinately persisting in making a disturbance in the belly while under sentence for a previous offence" and the poor soul was give a sentence of "7 days solitary confinement on bread and water in addition to his former sentence." (I had to use this gem somewhere after I stumbled across it recently, and where better?) It is these little gems we discover by accident that gives life to our research. I wonder what the poor fellow was fed to give him "a disturbance in the belly" while under sentence? Hopefully bread and water cured his complaint <smile>. Patricia
I'll have to check my ancestors to see if they are reported correctly. Thanks for bringing this to our attention. Patricia Hi Listers I haven't taken any notice of the 'Tasmanian Family Links' data base on Tas Archive's web site for many years, but some-one has just pointed out to me that they have managed to mangle a set of my own g-grandparents (a g-grandmother is hitched to the wrong guy). On the web site it still says that the database is 'closed' and no corrections being made. Has anyone had any success in getting some of the errors corrected? If so, by what route? In my case, I have a newly published book that puts the issue beyond doubt, if that helps! Dear All, In my previous message in response to Malcolm's email regarding the Colonial Links site I wrote that I was astonished by the way the AOT allowed mistakes in the Colonial Links site to be "perpetrated" - I meant to write "perpeptuated". But maybe they are both pertinent and relevant terms, now I come to think of it! On a lighter note, I feel that the convict Louis Cohen per Lonach had the right idea about the way I feel about this topic. At Port Arthur on January 21 1834 he was accused of "Obstinately persisting in making a disturbance in the belly while under sentence for a previous offence" and the poor soul was give a sentence of "7 days solitary confinement on bread and water in addition to his former sentence." (I had to use this gem somewhere after I stumbled across it recently, and where better?) Sorry Meryl for my levity. Carol Brill.
I would be really pleased if answers to Malcolm's posting could be made to the list, as I would also be interested in the replies. My family connections, set out at 'Tasmanian Family Links', have been completely scrambled in so many instances and, over the years, I have found a number of fellow researchers who have incorporated these errors into their own work, obviously without obtaining any verification (Smack!), and so these ridiculous inaccuracies are passed on, shared and perpetuated. Dear Suzanne, Edie and Gaylene would you be kind enough to send me the same info that you have sent to Ann. Violet was also my Grandmother’s sister and my beloved G Aunt. I have lovely memories of her and Uncle Fred. A funny story always remains with me - when I first got into family history some 30 years ago Aunt Violet was the last remaining family member of that generation, (and as I now know we have many wonderful convicts in the family), I thought she could answer my questions. Made a trip to Tassie from Vic and went to visit her and she said “Oh you don’t want to ask those questions, you will find out things you don’t want to know” - and I never did hear the stories she would have been able to tell :) Cheers Robin Gray nee Wicks Warrnambool, Vic On 28 May 2014, at 9:51 am, Ann Daniel <anndaniel147@gmail.com> wrote: > My sincere thanks to Suzanne, Edie and Gaylene for their kindness in > sending through information on the Fry family. Hi John I can't help with your question exactly, but if you fail to get any good leads, I note that a number of the municipalities have had decent histories written about them. Not the same thing I know, but they may have related info in their 'origins' type sections. Hi All, There seems to be some confusion about the parents of several Burke/Bourke children in a couple of earlier publications I have been given. Whilst these families are only twigs on my tree I would like to confirm the correct parents and wives for the following. Michael Burke born 20 Sep 1865 son of Michael & Bridget Burke nee Keogh. The book has Michael jnr. married to Anne Maria Pilkington and living Launceston. Thomas born circa 1862 married Catherine Healy (daughter of Edmond Healey/Healy and Mary Conway) parents recorded as Michael Burke & Bridget. I can find no records to support his parents were Michael and Bridget although he did live at Dromedary. Has anyone baptism records for Michael and Bridget's children?
