    3. Good morning all, Last night I watched a movie called Sisters at War which was basically set in Rabaul, PNG. It bought to mind something my mothers talked about - I did listen this time. She talked about a Nursing Sister who used to work at the Launceston General Hospital and was from Launceston. She was a prisoner in Malaysia or Singapore I think. She survived the war by feigning death but she returned to Launceston and I remember my mother going to her funeral which I think was held in the Chapel at Cosgrove Park. My mother must have known this brave lady to go to her funeral. Is there someone out there who would know who this was please. Byeeeee Robin W, Launceston

    3. I saw a couple of threads on other genealogical lists regarding John Vincent Terry and hiss family. I saw how confusing some of the research was and ... "UH UH, not going there !!". If you look in the newspaper articles in Victoria regarding the "disgrace" it appears Mary Ann O'Connor and Mr Terry were married in 1858 and she divorced him in 1861. The divorce is in the PROV indexes online. John Hammond and Emma Terry just before they married in 1880 laid "threatening" charges against one another 21 Feb 1880. I thought they might be in Launceston police charge book (POL450/1/2) but alas because they withdrew the charges they weren't entered. Based on other entries in the book either side of that date the information would have given their identities more flesh... 3. Hi Sally, Just dug around a bit and can't really answer your query but might offer a couple of points. Thomas and Fanny are in the 1848 census as living at Margaret Street in Launceston. There are 2 boys and a girl listed as living at that address. Since their daughter Hannah died in 1845 it leaves an unknown male child, so possibly another son. Just to pinpoint the John Hammond your looking at - in his obit from 1883 he was from "Cheshire, England". Pretty sure he was the convict per "Maya", transported with his brothers Thomas and George. All from Knutsford, Cheshire. http://search.archives.tas.gov.au/ImageViewer/image_ viewer.htm?CON33-1-79,204,66,L,80 Could the Emily Terry you are looking for, be the Elizabeth Emma Terry baptised 14 April 1854 to John Vincent and Ellen Terry - https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1971-35349-22410-49?cc=2125029&wc=M7HL-BM9:387523601,387523602,387527201 Perhaps her death certificate from 1923 as Emma Austin, buried Carr villa 12/7/1923 might hold a clue ?? 3. Hi all, I am looking for a little bit of information if anyone is attached to any of the above people. Frances Crew was a convict, arr. per Lady of the Lake, 1829. She married Thomas Terry in Hobart in 1834, and he died in Launceston in 1852. I have found 3 children George c 1832 (not reg) and Elizabeth Emma & Hannah. There may have been others, and would like to know of these. Fanny then married John Hammond in Launceston in 1855. There don't appear to be any issue of this marriage, (she was about 46, so not surprising) Frances/Fanny was found guilty of vagrancy in Launceston 21/8/1874 and received 2 months with hard labour, however she died the next day. John Hammond married Emma Terry in 1880. They already had 3-4 children by this time. My queries are: what was the connection between Emma Terry and John Hammond's first wife, if any? Or am I wrong to be thinking they married the same J ohn Hammond? I can find no birth for an Emma Terry, c 1853, also known on one occasion as Emily. I don't need any other information as I have the relevant BDMs as mentioned above, cheers Sally

    3. Hi For those of you like me who are researching the family of John Cox and Ann Brooks. I stumbled upon Andrew Cox website www.hanslopecox.org.uk it has the family from 1500 to late 1700. Our line is there and it gives the baptism and 2 marriges of Johns parents Samuel and Susanna Parks. Johns siblings. Andrews work is from original parish registers etc. May be useful to someone researching this family of Cox who first arrived in Port Jackson 1792 aboard the Indiaman "Pitt", then went to Norfolk island c1804 and then were transferred to Van Diemns land in 1813 aboard the lady Nelson. 3. Hi Wynette, Look at what I just found after Peter O. kindly sent the Supreme Court records for 1831 showing that death had been recorded against John Jibb. Amazing! Carol. On Monday the following prisoners (who had been tried the week before) were brought up and sentence of death recorded was passed on these seven, viz :- Richard Crozier, John Jubb, John Barker, James M'Donald, John Cockshot, William Brownloe, James Murphy. These five were ordered for execution, viz : - Mathew M'Avoy, and Edward Broughton, (who absconded from Macquarie harbour, with a companion, whom they stated (not on their trials, for they both pleaded guilty) had been killed by the Natives; his Honour in passing sentence exhorted them to repentance, if their consciences were burthened with the crime of murder, which there was much reason to fear was the case, with reference to their unfortunate companion.) Patrick M'Kane, William Taylor and William Jones. - The Hobart Town Courier (Tas.) 9 July 1831 Patrick M'Kone, who had been sentenced to death, and Richard Crozen, John Jubb, John Barker, James M'Donald, John Cockshott, on whom sentence of death recorded had been passed, have had their sentences commuted to transportation for life, and to be sent to Macquarie harbour. William Brownlow, James King, William Taylor and James Murphy, on whom similar sentences had been passed have been sent to the Prisoners' Barracks to, hard labour. I'm fairly sure the man in Tas. in 1830 and 1831 is the same man - there don't seem to be any other convicts anywhere of that name during this period. Joseph Bonney Senior absconded in Sydney c. 1814, if my memory serves me correctly. He then popped up in V.D.L., and Gov. Tom Davey wrote a letter to Macquarie asking permission for him to remain, which request was granted. I've been thinking that something similar may have happened with Jibb. I found runaway notices for Bonney in NSW, but haven't found any relating to Jibb yet. The thing that confuses me the most is the fact that I can't find any convict record for him in Tas. - seems very strange considering his crimes. I'm guessing he was sent to Port Macquarie after he absconded in 1831, and that's why he was back in N.S.W. later. Talk about the invisible man! Best wishes, Carol. -----Original Message----- From: symonds3 [mailto:psym8950@bigpond.net.au] Sent: Wednesday, 4 June 2014 6:54 PM To: AUS-TASMANIA Subject: Re: [AUS-Tas] John Jibbs/Jibb/Jebb Hi Carol, Are you sure John JIBB who was transported to NSW is the same man you have found in VDL? John JIBB was transported to NSW onboard "Lord Melville", arrived 14 July 1829; to be in Hobart in 1830 he must have been sent on to VDL upon arrival, but there's nothing online that I could find to show him arriving in Tasmania. At the NSW State Archives - John JIBB shows up in the Bathurst district of NSW in 1837 when he was granted his ticket-of-leave - http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article2213435 and his Conditional Pardon in 1847 - http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article37127027 http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article37129213 Maybe the Bathurst Family History Group could offer a few suggestions on his whereabout after this time? - http://www.bathurstfhg.asn.au/index.shtml I couldn't find any deaths for him in NSW, Victoria, Queensland or New Zealand - maybe he changed his name and started a new life? Cheers Trish Nowra NSW I'm attempting to find the convict record for John Jibb who was sentenced to transportation in 1828 in Lincoln, along with my rellie William "Tulip" Wright and a number of others. He arrived in Sydney on the Lord Melville in 1829, and then I find him, both as Jibb and Jebb in VDL in 1830, and again, as Jebbs, in 1831.
