    3. Hi Lynne, If you mean you are looking for Caleb's nephew, he wouldn't have to be an EVANS. He may have been the son of a sister, therefore having a different surname. 3. Hi All. What information I have on this man is that he was born in Manchester about 1811-13 and that is not guaranteed Married Elizabeth Hanslow in 1843 had a huge bunch of kids and died in 1894. Looking for immigration details etc the only reference I can find is to a convict James Metcalf. Is he the one? If so is there a permission to marry Elizabeth Hanslow? I could not find one. Relying on those that are far better at this then me [I once thought I was ok] but you also have better resources at hand. TIA Greg --- This email is free from viruses and malware because avast! 3. Possibly this lady. Mr and Mrs Simons were the parents of Jessie Elizabeth Hookway (nee Simons), aged 93 in 2004. Mrs Hookway (born in 1911) was a nurse in World War II and a prisoner of war in Sumatra for three and a half years, under the Japanese. She published a book relating to these experiences, republished in 1985 under the new title 'In Japanese Hands: Australian Nurses as P.O.W's' ; the earlier title being 'While History Past: the story of the Australian nurses who were prisoners of the Japanese for three and a half years' (1954). She lived in Launceston where she resumed her nursing career, becoming a sub-matron of the Launceston General Hospital and later a Child Health Clinic sister. -----Original Message----- From: aus-tasmania-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:aus-tasmania-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Dawn Webb Sent: Thursday, 12 June 2014 10:53 a.m. To: 'Robin Walker'; aus-tasmania@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [AUS-Tas] This might be a little off topic BUT The faking death was an incident in a book I read about 50 years ago - was it Vivian (Vivienne?) It bought to mind something my mothers talked about - I did listen this time. She talked about a Nursing Sister who used to work at the Launceston General Hospital and was from Launceston. She was a prisoner in Malaysia or Singapore I think. She survived the war by feigning death but she returned to Launceston and I remember my mother going to her funeral which I think was held in the Chapel at Cosgrove Park. Suggest you watch the movie "Paradise Road" which is based in part on the White Coolies book. It could have useful information in the credits. Brings to mind the mini-series "Tenko" also similar. 3. Reply to message 7. Hi there, always interested to hear about any research in Hobart with the name Clark, Clarke or James. My ancestor, Edith Clark or James, born Hobart probably 1870s. Used either name at different times on documents. Possible connection to an orphaned child in the Benevolent Asylum Sydney sent to Hobart - also a sister Fanny. More information available if this rings any bells. Thanks, Jennifer Jennifer *If I don't get back to you when you are expecting me to, please feel free to email me again. Life gets hectic sometimes and I really do want to stay in touch! * On 12 June 2014 09:17, <aus-tasmania-request@rootsweb.com> wrote: > > > AUS-Tasmania Mailing List Information Page > http://www.rootsweb.com/~austashs/ > Contact Admin AUS-Tasmania-Admin@rootsweb.com > > Today's Topics: > > 1. 3. Hi Robin A search of the AWM site reveals very little except photos, portraits and a modern-day war film that makes reference to the massacre at Banka Island; and Trove reveals little more. However, there is a reference on Trove to a memorial to Vivian Bullwinkel in the Soldier's Chapel in St George's Cathedral in Perth that provides a little more info: http://trove.nla.gov.au/work/151765148?q=+Vivian+bullwinkle <http://trove.nla.gov.au/work/151765148?q=+Vivian+bullwinkle&l-availability= y&l-australian=y&c=picture&versionId=165428334> &l-availability=y&l-australian=y&c=picture&versionId=165428334 It says: Memorial Plaque commemorates Vivian Statham (nee Bullwinkle), the sole survivor of Banka Island massacre in World War Two. Vivian Bullwinkel-Statham AO, MBE, ARRC, ED (18 December 1915 - 3 July 2000) was an Australian Army nurse during the Second World War. She was the sole survivor of the Banka Island Massacre, when the Japanese killed 21 of her fellow nurses on Radji Beach, Bangka Island (Indonesia) on 16 February 1942. Vivian retired from the army in 1947 and became Director of Nursing at the Fairfield Infectious Diseases Hospital. She devoted herself to the nursing profession and to honouring those killed on Banka Island, raising funds for a nursesand#39; memorial and serving on numerous committees, including a period as a member of the Council of the Australian War Memorial, and later president of the Australian College of Nursing. If you get the spelling correct on the AWM site (BULLWINKEL) the search engine comes up with lots of photos, but only one document - her private papers (diaries etc), which are seemingly not open to the public. I have some books on wartime nursing history, and will have a look later in the day (have to duck out now). Cheers Karen Groeneveld Queanbeyan NSW

She was a prisoner in Malaysia or Singapore I think. She survived the war by feigning death but she returned to Launceston and I remember my mother going to her funeral which I think was held in the Chapel at Cosgrove Park.
