Hi Listers, Would anyone with the TPI be able to do a lookup for the marriage of William Morris to Elizabeth Smith 1831 at Sorell ? Cheers, Peter Sent from my iPhone
Dear Listers, I feel sure that this question will have been asked before but I still don't know the answer: Are conduct records for the 290+ convicts who were brought across Bass Strait from the settlement at Port Phillip to the Derwent by David COLLINS in January 1804 still available, and if so, where are they? I can't find them via the TAHO search portal. Have they not survived? Incidentally, on the TAHO site, these 290+ convicts are listed as having been brought to VDL on 'HMS Calcutta', but that is incorrect, isn't it? They actually arrived on 'Ocean'. Certainly, they had been brought to Port Phillip on 'HMS Calcutta' but when COLLINS decided to abandon that settlement, the captain of 'HMS Calcutta (WOODRIFF) refused to go to VDL. He sailed straight back to England (via Sydney), leaving COLLINS no choice but to use the store ship 'Ocean' to transfer his settlement to the Derwent. Is there any dispute about that? Why then are these convicts listed as having arrived on 'HMS Calcutta'? Don Bradmore, Central Victoria.
Hi Listers. May need a lot of help with this line. Michael Bone married Shirley Perkins [nee Mogford] in the Early to Mid 1960's and had a couple of children. Michael died in 1985 as a result of a tree felling accident I believe. [Any media on this?] I believe he may be of indigenous decent and I have no experience in tracing Indigenous lines. Any and all help greatly appreciated. Greg --- This email is free from viruses and malware because avast! Antivirus protection is active. http://www.avast.com
I wonder whether anyone is able to help track down Giles YARDE (b Devon UK 1782). Transported for 7 years, he arrived in Tasmania on Moffatt II in 1838 and was assigned to Job PADFIELD in Campbell Town c 1842. Cert of Freedom 1844. I have seen (I think) most of his convict records, but have not come across anything from the time after he regained his freedom. Thanks in anticipation
These have now gone to a new owner. Anthony - There are details of this couple on the Female Convict Database. I have a friend who is a descendant of this couple - she's a prolific quilter and most of her quilts are intricate and geometric just like the Rajah Quilt, so I'm sure Jane Hanly/Henly must have worked on that quilt! Her mother came into the George Town Watch House a few years back to add to her long years of research. She hadn't found the origins of Jane Hanly so I suggested checking the Female Family Founders Database and there she was, along with the her convict husband George Williams! Two convicts in one day! There was another researcher listed on the Database you may be able to contact. I'll contact you off list to arrange a connection with my friend and her mum. There is not a lot on extra info on Jane in the book Rajah book "Patchwork Prisoners" by Trudy Cowley and Dianne Snowden. ....Lorraine -----Original Message----- From: Anthony Fletcher Sent: Friday, June 27, 2014 8:31 AM To: Aus-Tas Subject: [AUS-Tas] WILLIAMS-HENLY Hello Everyone I have had little success tracing the family of George Williams (convict per "Gilmore" arrived 24 January 1839) and Jane Henly (convict per "Rajah" arrived 19 July 1841) who married in Hobart on 10 June 1844. Hi Peter Thanks for your message. I suspect that the George Williams on the Electoral Rolls 1873-1874 was another George who married Anna or Annie DANCEY - the last seven of their nine children were born at Fingal between 1863 and 1877. I am trying to sort out the some of the WILLIAMS families of the east coast, north east, north, and north west of Tasmania. I have a theory drawn from family stories that some of them are closely related to my WILLIAMS-BEACH (or BEECH) family. Hi Anthony, a George Williams appears in the 1873-74 Electoral Rolls as having leasehold land at Fingal. Doesn't appear in later or earlier years. . The *Electoral district of Fingal* was a single-member electoral district of the Tasmanian House of Assembly <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tasmanian_House_of_Assembly>. It was based around Fingal <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fingal,_Tasmania> in Tasmania <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tasmania>'s east and also included the coastal towns of St Marys <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St_Marys,_Tasmania> and St Helens <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St_Helens,_Tasmania>, and inland districts such as Avoca <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avoca,_Tasmania> and Mathinna <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mathinna,_Tasmania>. If they moved further up the coast beyond Lisdillon at Little Swanport this might be him.
