    3. Hmmmm, Broxam lists that there were 51 Government boys ex Parkhurst Reformatory on board. The AOT convict index CD only has 42 records listed. Was he tried in 1837 and then arrived on the Mandarin in 1843? This needs a bit more hunting. 8-) regards, Meryl Yost, Launceston, Tasmania ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Administrator: AUS-Tasmania & AUS-Tas-Surnames mailing lists AUS-Tasmania Genealogy pages http://www.rootsweb.com/~austashs/ ----- Original Message ----- From: "Peter Oakley" <pete.j.oakley@gmail.com> To: "AUS-Tasmania@rootsweb.com" <AUS-TASMANIA@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, July 05, 2014 5:33 PM Subject: Re: [AUS-Tas] GOODYER, Edward. 3. Hi Joy, The AOT convict index has the links to his records for retrials in VDL http://portal.archives.tas.gov.au/menu.aspx?detail=1&type=C&id=79612 As per the previous responses the first link on the page is incorrect. Peter has sent you the correct link. The AOT index has 01 Jan 1837 for his arrival on the Mandarin. Firstly the 01 Jan has been entered as the DB needed something entered when the index was first done and the date from the records was only the year 1837. There is no arrival of the Mandarin in 1837 in VDL or NSW. The Mandarin arrived in VDL with convicts in 1840. Hey may well be the Edward Light who arrived on the Royal Sovereign in 1838 as he is the right age. http://portal.archives.tas.gov.au/menu.aspx?detail=1&type=C&id=42688 regards, Meryl Yost, Launceston, Tasmania ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Administrator: AUS-Tasmania & AUS-Tas-Surnames mailing lists AUS-Tasmania Genealogy pages http://www.rootsweb.com/~austashs/ ----- Original Message ----- From: "Joy L" <lyko3069@tpg.com.au> To: <aus-tasmania@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, July 05, 2014 1:52 PM Subject: Re: [AUS-Tas] GOODYER, Edward. 3. Something to think about isnt it Patricia. I note that John the eldest son name his first son William one of the two godparents of Josephus, Guilliemus (William) and the other Allicia, I would think Alice. A family name. You are not going to find your brickwall if they are recorded in the Latin or other term, if you write the Anglicised version of the name. The IGI fiche is still a good place to look first before electronically as you could pick up the way it is spelt there. The same goes for abbreviated names. 3. Hi Clare, I have made up a full set of rough Flood family Charts, filling in details as I find them, to put into my familytree maker program.. So would be willing to scan them to you and maybe you can add any dates I may have missed, or correct if you see fit. I have seen the TPI and the TASFED index and have the Tamiot, but you may have others, I will do some more checking myself. . I have been in touch with many researching the family over the years, checking originals where possible. Now as for Ann Gorman being Joseph Floods wife, I can tell you that early on in my research, I either sent for it myself or some kind researcher sent it to me, a copy of John Flood the first son of Josephs baptism 24 September 1797. It came from the NSW Registration of Births, Deaths and Marraige act 1973. It clearly states father Joseph Flood and mother Ann Germaine. John was one of five to this couple. It was a true copy of particulars recorded in a register of St Philips, Sydney, Church of England. Ann Germaine, alias Jarmy, was already here when Joseph Flood arrived in 1793. She was a convict who had arrived on the Mary Ann., 9th July 1791. Ann Gorman is mentioned in the Freemans journal of April, 1793, so still in Ireland. Joseph arrived here in August 1793 to NSW. I dont think there was a marraige as Ann Germaine married a chap named Howell later. Seems Joseph had a relationship with both women though. regards Edie ----- Original Message ----- From: "Gene Bear" <gene2bear@gmail.com> To: "Edie" <eamca@bigpond.com>; <AUS-TASMANIA@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, July 04, 2014 1:19 PM Subject: Re: [AUS-Tas] Joseph FLOOD, born Dublin c1763-1808, convict per "BODDINGTON" arrd NSW 1793 from Cork. Greetings Edie, from another descendant with a sore head from bashing at the Brick Wall that is Joseph FLOOD! >From the info you gave it would seem we are at a similar point in our research, though I finally decided on Ann GORMAN as his ‘wife’, not Ann GERMAINE... what a mixup of names and dates there!! I’m descended from your John Thomas FLOOD’s big sister, Mary Ann FLOOD (1821-1871), who married James BRUMBY (1811-1855).

    3. >From my research into my Woodcock, and related, ancestors in Yorkshire in the late 1600s and early 1700s the names were Latinised from the form of English spoken by the "common people" (i.e. not clergy) rather than a true Latin meaning of the given name......e.g. Andrew was shown as Andirus, George as Georgius, Elizabeth as Elisabetha etc., William became Guillaime or something similar, the initial letters Gu having the same pronounciation as our English W. My ancestors were protestant so would have named a child Andrew, the clergyman changed it to the then current Latinsied version of the name. It can make our research very difficult. As far as I was able to discover the only way to proceed was/is to use the current form of a name and disregard the spelling used in Parish Registers of the time, but to keep in mind there could be a change of spelling in each register. The Catholic priests did use the correct Latin form of the name given to a child, it is only the protestant registers which used a Latinised form of the name. This is a very intersting discussion. 3. Edie, It was apparently quite common for entries in Catholic Church registers to use a Latinised version of the names of the individuals. All the clergy would have been familiar with Latin. I think you can safely accept that "Josephus" is the same as "Joseph". Whether the information you have relates to your ancestor is another matter. Not sure what "Laurentii" translates to - maybe "Laurence"? "Sera" is most likely "Sarah". Not sure whether this practice was standard throughout the Catholic Church, peculiar to particular regions or sections of the church, or maybe just a few individual priests expressing their intellectual prowess. I've come across it a couple of times and read about the practice somewhere, but can't remember where. -- Regards Mike Hurburgh --- This email is free from viruses and malware because avast! 3. I can send you what I have on the FLOOD Family if you like but I think it will only duplicate what you already have! I’m very interested in the Josephus FLOOD possibility that you are pursuing, and hope we can keep in contact even if only to commiserate! 1. [AUS-Tas] Arrival in VDL of James Middleton and Family
    2. Don Bradmore
    3. Dear Listers Many thanks to Janine and Nicole for their generous help with my query about the arrival date in VDL of James MIDDLETON and family between 1832 and 1835. For those who are interested, Janine suggests that they arrived on “Atwick’ on 15 January 1834. While the ‘Atwick’ passenger list published in Launceston Examiner¸ 23 January does not include them, it is likely that the people named as ‘Mr JAMIESON, Sarah and Susannah ditto’ are in reality James MIDDLETON, his wife Susannah and daughter (also Susannah). This theory is supported by a notice in Hobart Town Courier, 17 January 1834, page 2, that advises that there were two engineers among the ‘Atwick’ passengers. Further support is provided by Nicole who points that James Middleton had set up an engineering business in Liverpool Street, Hobart, by May 1834 (see advertisement, Colonial Times, 20 May 1834, page 1.) Best wishes to all, Don Bradmore, Central Victoria.

    3. Hi A message on the Ire-Dublin list came through for someone else and i thought I would search for Joseph Flood there. What I found was a Josephus Flood, baptised in 1765. It gives father as Laurentii Flood and and mother Sera. Neither are family names, but he could have been orphaned early and never knew his parents. The Church image isnt available at the moment but it gives the Book number, Entry number and Record Identifier, so will be worth looking at that. If the Church register page has not yet been imaged that would explain why this particular Josephus Flood, n Latin form hasnt been found before. Our Josephs birth is given as c1763 as he his age was given as 30 on arrival in 1793. That age may not be correct either. Will check the place of birth of Fingal out as well. 3. Hi Trish, I havent posted to the NSW rootsweb list or the conict list as yet. I am already on the Dublin, rootsweb list and I have joined a websitge similar to rootschat and genforum today it is Ireland based and is called Ireland xo.com Ireland reaching out, where you can post a message. I replied to such a message today and have received two already re Joseph Flood and his son John Flood. Over the years there have been so many conflicting peices of information, so it would be great to get something concrete. Thanks for replying Edie McArthur ----- Original Message ----- From: "symonds3" <psym8950@bigpond.net.au> To: "AUS-TASMANIA" <aus-tasmania@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, July 03, 2014 5:10 PM Subject: Re: [AUS-Tas] Joseph FLOOD, born Dublin c1763-1808,convict per "BODDINGTON" arrd NSW 1793 from Cork. > Hi Edie, > There's nothing on the NSW State Archives site to show Joseph FLOOD's > native > place - > Joseph FLOOD, tried Dublin, January 1792, sentenced to 7 years, aged 30, > ship "Boddington" > Ship Indent - information as above, except trial is shown as December 1791 > The Irish Convict Database has him as - > Joseph FLOOD, arrived "Boddingtons" 1793, aged 30 on arrival, born 1763, > native place blank, tried 1791 Dublin City for stealing a horse, previous > trial conviction trials details available, spouse-lived with Ann GORMAN > (d.1814); died 1808 Parramatta

    3. Hi Edie, There's nothing on the NSW State Archives site to show Joseph FLOOD's native place - Joseph FLOOD, tried Dublin, January 1792, sentenced to 7 years, aged 30, ship "Boddington" Ship Indent - information as above, except trial is shown as December 1791 The Irish Convict Database has him as - Joseph FLOOD, arrived "Boddingtons" 1793, aged 30 on arrival, born 1763, native place blank, tried 1791 Dublin City for stealing a horse, previous trial conviction trials details available, spouse-lived with Ann GORMAN (d.1814); died 1808 Parramatta The Irish-Australia Transportation Database doesn't have him listed, but many of the early records didn't survive in Ireland due to a fire. There are a couple of family trees on the www.familysearch.org website that show him as Joseph FLOOD born 1763 in Fingal in co Dublin, but there is nothing on the IGI to support this information.. Maybe joining one of the Irish mailing lists would help, if there are more records available in Ireland to be checked? http://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/index/intl/IRL/IRELAND-ROOTS.html http://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/index/intl/IRL/IRL-DUBLIN.html http://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/index/intl/IRL/IRISH_CONVICTS.html Have you posted messages to the New South Wales or the Convict Mailing Lists?
