Hi Listers, I'm interested in learning more about 'Fenton Forest', near Glenora, the estate of Captain Michael Fenton (1789-1874). Can someone tell me, please, what has been written about the tenant families that Fenton brought out from Ireland to work for him on his estate, please? I'm familiar with his brief biography in 'Australian Dictionary of Biography' and with the several obituaries published in newspapers after his death but require more detail. I'd welcome contact from others who have a research interest in Fenton, his estate or his former tenants. All good wishes, Don Bradmore, Central Victoria.
Dear All, "Notes from the Hobart Benevolent Society 1858-1914: Compiled by Joyce Purtscher from the Minute Books" is Joyce Purtscher's latest effort of over 200 pages and is now available. There are roughtly 20 entried to a page (just a rought count by me of several pages) Some entries only one liners (rare), yet another I saw had 30 lines... Joyce's comments are to check the original books, "due to my need to abbreviate when indexing." The books she has indexed are from TAHO, NS 1637/1/1 - 28 October 1859 to 28 December 1871; NS 1637/1/10 - 6 January 1881 to 11 May 1882; NS 1637/1/3 - 5 January, 1888 to 26 March 1903; NS 1637/1/4 - 2 April 1903 to 17 December 1908; NS 1637/1/5 7 January 1909 to 14 May 1914. She comments in the introduction that the books describe a social history of lives of the poor and handicapped during those years; some of the conditions described tell of conditions unbelievable in today's society - housing not fit for habitation, illnesses, lack of clothing and bedding, unemployment, and children aged as young as 9 years working to support their parents! single mothers, breakup of families, lack of education and opportunities especially for females. Congratulations to Joyce and thanks on indexing and sharing this wonderful resource easier to find our poor folk. Maree.
Thank you Maree, That sounds brilliant. Do you have any idea where it will be sold? I found this - marriage Digger - Federation Index. Victoria 1889-1901 MOULDER Eliza Jane married OWEN Wm Jno Birth Place: HBERG (her) N WALES (him) Year: 1901 Reg. Number: 6420 It seems she might have been living in, or grown up in, Korumburra but she was born at Heidelberg, a Melbourne suburb. And these children Digger - Edwardian Index. Victoria 1902-1913 OWEN Emily May Father: Wm Jno Mother: Eliza Jane MOULDER Birth Place: OUTTRIM Year: 1902 Reg. Number: 21450 OWEN Ernt Moulder Father: Unknown Mother: Eliza Jane MOULDER Birth Place: PRESTON Year: 1909 Reg. Number: 22244R Seems husband might have done a runner as Digger - Edwardian Index. Victoria 1902-1913 MOULDER Ernest Moulder Father: Unknown Mother: Eliza Jane OWEN Birth Place: PRESTON Year: 1909 Reg. Number: 22244R - the R stands for revised - not sure from this which was done first! Could be the registrar stuffed up of course - it would not be the first time I have seen it. No more found in Victoria till it cuts out 1920.. I think Outtrim is down Korumburra way but Preston is certainly a Melbourne suburb. No marriage for Emily May OWEN found. Annie OWEN m BONE Jno Henry 1924 reg 1975 but no way of knowing from index if it is her or not, and probably not. I looked at the MO*LDER surname and did not find anything I recognised. If they went to Tasmania, then that is an explanation. And I found this Digger - Death Index. Victoria 1921-1985 OWEN John Frederick Father: William John Mother: Eliza Jane MOULDER Death Place: HEID Age: 52 Year: 1963 Reg Number: 24824 Heidelberg is also the Repatriation Hospital - a lot of servicemen and nurses etc died there.. even if they lived elsewhere. it is very run down now, not used as the Repat as I knew it growing up a few miles away, and is now part of the "Austin hospital. On the corner roughly of Waterdale Rd and Bell St but it covers several blocks really. The certs can be downloaded from the website of Vic bdm on payment by credit card ($20?) - and it is a pdf to your computer within a few seconds I have found. However, things have VERY recently changed with the website so you will have to search about a bit - but you have all you need and there is no need to pay for searching an index on line. If you want a legal doc - ie handled by human hands and stamped "certified true copy" then you will pay more and wait longer, maybe weeks, and it will land in your letterbox. Searching Trove, I found the obituary for my great grandmother's brother, William John Owen who, as the family story goes, ran away to sea and ended up in Tasmania and who had a daughter named Annie. That was all we knew so I am delighted that the obituary provides a whole heap more information. However, the image is not very good and I would like to clarify some of the details given in the electronic translation. The obituary is in Advocate (Burnie, Tas. : 1890 - 1954) Saturday 8 August 1942 pg. 2 - on Trove at http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/68775612?searchTerm=late%20william%2 0john%20owen%20tewkesbury <http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/68775612?searchTerm=late%20william% 20john%20owen%20tewkesbury&searchLimits=l-state=Tasmania|||l-title=46|||sort by> &searchLimits=l-state=Tasmania|||l-title=46|||sortby The details I would like to confirm are: * when he went to sea - was it aged 13 years or maybe 15 or even 18 years? * his wife's name - It looks like it was Eliza Jane Molder from Kurrumburra, Victoria - is that correct? * when they arrived in Tewkesbury - is it 30 years ago or is it 36 years ago? Now that I know the names of his children and the area they settled in, I have been able to find more newspaper articles relating to the family. William seems to have been quite a vocal person and wrote letters to the editor which is great as I now have some idea of what life was like for them in the Tewkesbury/Oonah area. I have also been able to get some details on the two sons who were missing during the war. Does anyone know if any members of the Owen family still live in the area? I know his sons, Arthur James and John Frederick, moved to Victoria, but it appears that sons David George and William stayed in Tasmania. Many thanks for any assistance with this. Ooops! Was all ready to look at some 1890s copies, only to find that final checking is not yet complete. NLA seems to add copies to the 'available' list with this message, "This item is part way through the digitisation process. It will be available when this page passes the final quality control check." You can ask to be notified by email when a certain issue is completed. Hi Sally. Can only comment on the law in Victoria. Basically No Body = No Inquest = no death certificate. A death cert. Needs to be issued by a medical practitioner who can give a cause of death. If he will not issue same an inquest MUST be held. If there is no body there cannot be a death certificate. An inquest is an inquiry over the body of the deceased. No body .... no inquest. Consequently the newspaper reports are the only "evidence" you can have. The seven year law stated in your previous answer still applies. Relly drowned in Lake Colac. Body not found.... Wife was in limbo for seven years until he could be declared dead. Not easy with a young family. Hope this helps Regards Anne -----Original Message----- From: narnty -----Original Message----- From: narnty [mailto:sallynolan531@hotmail.com] Sent: Thursday, 14 August 2014 6:56 AM To: Heather Minol; aus-tasmania@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [AUS-Tas] Looking for record of death in Macquarie Harbour 1878 Hi Heather, I'm reasonably sure that if no bodies were recovered, legally people were not accepted as dead for 7 years, no matter who 'saw' them disappear. Hi Barbara, Ivy Annie Louisa Pearce was born on 20 Nov 1915 at Charles Street, Moonah, parents as stated. Elaine Pearce was born on 4 Jan 1919 at Charles Street, Moonah, father not stated, mother Ivy Lydia Pearce nee Nilder. Moonah is a northern suburb of Hobart. No record of Albert c 1911, perhaps born before they reached Tasmania? This article may relate to Albert junior, or someone else with the same name? Examiner (Launceston), Wednesday 1 August 1923, Page 4 HOBART ACCIDENTS. Albert Pearce, aged 14 years, ofMonah, was working at Cadbury's factory, Hobart, yesterday, when he caughthis hand in a machine which was making parts of cocoa tins. Upon his arrival at the General Hospital it was foundthat his right hand was badly crushed, but the finger escaped serious injury. The Mercury (Hobart), Wednesday 1 August 1923, Page 6 HOSPITAL CASES. Ben. Lewis, 58 years of age, a labourer at the Zinc Works, was admitted to theGeneral Hospital about half-past 3 yesterday afternoon suffering from theeffects of a fall from a ladder. He wasfound to be suffering from an injury to the left shoulder and abrasions tothe left cheek. Shortly afterwards a lad named Albert Pearce, 14 years ofage, who resides at Derwent-park, wasadmitted to the same institution. Whileworking at Cadbury's Factory at Claremont, removing the bottom of a cocoatin from the machinery, his hand was caught and crushed. It made a hole inthe palm of his right hand, but didnot injure any of his fingers. Derwent Park is a suburb adjacent to Moonah. Have been doing some more research using the Launceston Daily Telegraph, newly added to TROVE. It's now complete, from 18 June 1883 to 28 Mar 1928, when it ceased publication. For the period 2 July 1881 - 15 June 1883, it was called The Telegraph. This hasn't been added yet. Judy
I am following a line of my NELDER family that when she (Ivy Lydia) married to Albert Auguston (Albert Herculean Augustus) PEARCE in 1910 in NZ, they moved to Tasmania shortly after. I have found on line that Albert died in WW1, Ivy is buried/cremated at Derwent Gardens (Cornelian Bay Cemetery?) & that a son Albert Edward George Pearce is buried/cremated at Cornelian Bay Cemetery. There was a daughter Annie Ivy as well. Albert was born about 1911 & Annie in 1915. I would love to contact family members to be able to follow this line through. I know at this stage nothing more than the above so would love any help provided. I was hoping that Tasmania may have had a search place like NZ for Births, deaths & marriages but I havent located that if there is one, at present, mauybe someone can advise me on that as well.
