    1. Re: [AUS-Tas] John Moore
    2. Peter Oakley via
    3. Hi Alan, Given that John Moore was living on the corner of Warwick and Argyle Street and was protestant/Anglican he was most likely a parishioner of Holy Trinity Church, which is just up the hill from there. I've got access to a few of Holy Trinity baptisms and John Henry Moore appears there bapt. 7 Aug. born 2 June 1842 when John and Ann Moore were living at Veterans Row. (now upper Murray Street) John's rank is listed as Carter. So the most likely place he was buried might be the old Trinity graveyard which was located on the corner of modern Burnett Street and the Brooker Highway, Now a schools oval/ recreation ground. If I get the opportunity I will try to verify if this is where he was buried or not. The General Hospital Death Book (HSD145/1/1) has February 1872, Ward 7, Name - Moore, John, Age - 76, Rel. - P(rotestant), Cond. - FS, Date of Add. - 6 Dec 1871, Disease - Morbus Cordis, Ship - C. Forbes, Date of Death - 5 Feb. 1872, Where born - Somerset, Trade - Groom, Residence - (cut off page) Cheers, Peter On Sun, Sep 14, 2014 at 4:53 PM, Alan Lüdeke <aus-tasmania@rootsweb.com> wrote: > I am trying to find information as to where my gggrandfather, John Moore, > was buried, and contact any of his other descendants. > > > > He died at the Royal Hobart Hospital in Feb 1872. The hospital records state he was “buried by friends”. The Mercury 7 Feb 1872 stated that “the funeral will leave his late residence, corner Warwick and Argyle Streets this day”. There is no mention of a cemetery. John arrived in Tasmania as a convict on Sir Charles Forbes in 1830. He married Mary Ann Berry in 1836. 3. I wonder if your "Gregory" family are related to the NW Coast Gregory family who ran the good old Central Hotel in Burnie for many, many years? I lived in that establishment off and on when I was employed by PMG's Department. Alas the "Central" succumbed to progress in the 1970's, ignominiously serving as a temporary Police HQ for a while, and now demolished with government offices of some sort in its place. I think I have some historical info on the Gregory's if that would help. 1. [AUS-Tas] Origins of Eleanor Gregory - daughter of John Gregory per Indian 1810 then Kangaroo to VDL 1816.
    2. Carol Brill via
    3. Dear Anthony, Irene and all, This is another of those very rare days when the brick walls come tumbling down - and this is all thanks to Anthony sending me scans of the relevant pages of Exiled Three Times Over"! (Not to forget all the hard work Irene Schaffer and Thelma McKay put in to write this wonderful book.) This is the pertinent section of the book, on page 171: In Sept. 1827, Thomas Fowles stated that he had two orphans under his protection, one of whom was Eleanor Gregory, aged 16, whose father had been sent to Macquarie Harbour. John Gregory, per Indian, 1810, was at Macquarie Harbour acting as the commissariat clerk - he was known for his beautiful handwriting. I checked out said John Gregory in the Col. Sec. Papers on Ancestry, and found a letter written from Hobart Town to his brother May 1823, in which he wrote " I have two motherless children, on 14 and one 11, who in the course of a very short period of time shall require to be established one way or another.." YIPPEE! I assume John Gregory sen. knew he would be sent to Macquarie Harbour as a clerk when he wrote the letter - I need to check the time M.H. was opened. There are some puzzling aspects to the ages of the children - it looks as though Eleanor was born in England, so John Gregory' s wife must have come to NSW at a very early stage. Or, she may even have accompanied him on his ship - as Mrs. Fawkner accompanied her husband on the Calcutta. The irony in all of this is the fact that I' d long ago discounted John Gregory sen. as the husband of Ann Elizabeth Gregory, firstly because he was too old, and secondly, because John Gregory junior could not read or write at all well, so couldn't have been the man with the lovely hand-writing! Best wishes and thanks, Carol Brill.

G/'day Ainslee....firstly, and most importantly, iI have not lightly dismissed the results of my search for Thomas Hite: throwing a blanket over the results indicates that someone might think that a a particular matter is being covered up...in this case far from what we are trying to achieve. many branches of the Hite family want to know what, if any connection there is to Aboriginal heritage. I personally believe that this will be the next Convict Heritage.. What I said was Together with some members of the Hite Family I have done a considerable amount of research and proved that it is 99.99% NON FACTUAL. The most important thing in family History [Genealogy] is ensure that it is correct in every detail...ie give a credible Source Reference...in the case of this Thomas Hite there just isn't any. Of course this doesnt mean to say the story is not correct....Samuel Hite spent some time as a sheep herder in outback tasmania and was involved with the Brady Bushranger Saga, so he could have had a relationship. My point is that the research failed to prove the Thomas Hite story had no basis in known fact...you are more than welcome to contact me off list.. Regards George [chuditch@iinet.net.au]

    3. GREGORY Carol, As you say that your Eleanor arrived in VDL from N.I., assuming that’s Northern Ireland, I wonder whether there is any connection between your Gregory family and Lady Augusta Gregory (nee Persse) who was a major figure in Ireland’s literary life during the nationalist struggle for independence in Ireland. You can read about her here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Augusta,_Lady_Gregory and if you follow the links from that page to her husband and their son you can find out a bit more. With William Butler Yeats and others, she founded Ireland’s most famous theatre the Abbey Theatre – and for one glorious year in 1927 my father, performed small parts in first performances of plays written by them both, George Bernard Shaw and others. Dad used the stage name Edward Raymond (his full given name was Edward Raymond Joseph Napier Charles Curling – I think this was his parents’ attempt to put his family history in writing as all except one of the names (insofar as I can discover) were the names of antecedents!!), The Abbey Theatre website has a very good archive section which lists all the plays in which actors participated. Lady Gregory and Yeats were themselves very active in the campaign for Ireland’s independence. LucyAnn

    1. [AUS-Tas] Origins of ELEANOR GREGORY in "Exiled Three Times Over."
    2. Carol Brill via
    3. Dear All, I've been hunting for ages for the origin of the JOHN GREGORY who married Ann Elizabeth Briscoe in April 1837 in the Richmond district. His oldest daughter Sarah, (named after Ann Elizabeth's mother, born Sarah Goodwin) married John Frederick LONGEY, in May 1867. I knew for years that John Longey was the son of Eleanor Gregory and Frederick Longey. I had thought that was just an interesting coincidence, until very recently, when I fortuitously found the marriage of Frederick Longey and Eleanor Gregory on the same page as William Bunster's 1829 marriage, when I was looking them up online. Surprise surprise, a witness at Eleanor's wedding was none other than a John Gregory, possibly Eleanor's brother, thus making Sarah Gregory and John Frederick Longey first cousins. When I googled for the name, Eleanor Gregory, I found that she was mentioned in Irene's book "Exiled Three Times Over." And I can't find my copy of the book anywhere! I rang a friend who has the book and who told me that Thomas Fowles was caring for Eleanor at some stage, and was also caring for several orphans, presumably the children of Thomas Gregory, who had arrived in VDL on the Estramina from N.I. in 1809(?)with an un-named woman, and an un-named child. Thomas Gregory was the father of this Elizabeth Gregory (who married Edward Fisher), and who came to VDL from N.I., as well as other children from Thomas' marriage. Their mother Sarah died in 1807, so possibly her widower Thomas fathered more children with this un-named woman. I realise this is a poor explanation of what I suspect might be the key to Eleanor and John Gregorys' backgrounds - and I wish that Garry W. was still around to add his precious insight into this conundrum, but basically I suspect their origins lie way back on N.I. If my hunch is correct, it would mean that the Gregorys (John and an older-born-on-Norfolk-Island-Eleanor) lived with Thomas Fowles next door but one from the Goodwins'property on Drougthy Point after they arrived in VDL, grew up with them, and would have attended the same school in Clarence! If anyone could send me the material in Irene's book re. Eleanor and Thomas Fowles, with references, I'd be very grateful. Anything more would be just brilliant, and, for those kind souls who find my page in Heaven and Hell Together on John Gregory and Ann Elizabeth Briscoe, it's now to be changed, as I never felt terribly happy with the John Gregory I have listed there on our website as Ann's husband. Best wishes, Carol Brill.

    2. Peter Oakley via
    3. Hi Listers, A bit of a follow on from a thread relating to Fenton Forest. I'm wondering if any has come across "Half Moon Neck", Fenton Forest?? I've only found 3 references to it in newspapers being in 1856 in relation to James Salter Sr. & Jr. plus a James Clark. The other in reference to a school being built by M Fenton and parishioners from Russell Falls, the Styx, Half moon Neck and other parts. The name suggests an area or point that a river flows around and nearly cuts it off except for an isthmus. I know of a couple of necks on the Derwent such as Triffets Neck near the same area as Fenton Forest but I can't find that particular one call Half-moon on any map I have access too? Cheers, Peter

    1. Re: [AUS-Tas] Thomas Hite

    3. Thanks for the spate of messages relating to who's who in the Tasmanian aboriginal history 'legends' of late. Many of us have documentary evidence of our family history going back to an era where aboriginal liaisons with white whalers/sealers, convicts and settlers to VDL were quite common. To come out with a blanket statement that it's 99% non factual doesn't necessarily apply to stories others on this list have in their possession. Frankly I find it extremely interesting that such a high pecentage of the current population is accepting of the fact we are a country of mixed-races and no longer ashamed to declare that many of our forebears were a mix of non-European and Tasmanian/Australian native bloodlines. In the 1960s I worked in Wellington NZ for two or three years in my early 20s and I shared a house with a bunch of workmates. The ground floor apartment was rented by a very nice young man of Maori background who also worked in the same Government Dept. We'd occasionally walk around the block in the summer evenings. I well recall the look of disgust on the faces of two middle aged women approaching from the opposite direction as they approached my friend and I walking side by side along the footpath. The only obvious reason for their 'display' was the 'colour' difference between the two of us. Neither of us reacted to their attitude (but we were tempted!) Thank goodness the great majority of the population has risen above such attitudes in this day and age! and I trust I haven't opened a can of worms about racial differences! Cheers Ainslie.
