    1. Re: [AUS-Tas] Valuation Roll Look Up and Street Addresses
    2. Mike Hurburgh via
    3. Peter (and others), Can I suggest that when you quote an address in Hobart (and probably other towns), you also include any information regarding adjoining properties and occupiers, and the location with respect to the nearest cross streets. The valuation rolls include all the cross streets so this should be easy. The street numbering in Hobart has changed substantially at least twice in the last 200 years (as have a few street names), so addresses quoted in older documents and newspapers may not correspond with those of today. The Metropolitan Drainage Board detail plans provide a convenient reference for much of the city, fixing the addresses as of 1905. The map of Hobart compiled in 1858 by F Proeschel gives quite a few addresses and pinpoints the location of many businesses (not all, unfortunately, probably only those who paid a subscription). Several inner Hobart streets have been lengthened and/or rebuilt well into Hobart's history, necessitating re-numbering. Obvious examples are: Campbell Street (originally known as Bridge Street) only went as far as (the bridge at) Collins Street; Elizabeth Street was extended beyond Macquarie Street when the Town Hall was built; Davey Street was extended from Murray Street to the Old Wharf in the late 1800s. -- Regards Mike Hurburgh --- This email is free from viruses and malware because avast! 3. Thanks Peter, I would say that that is exactly what it is!!!! Thanks very much. But how did you find this? I didn't know that the CSO index books were online and searchable. Except that File 47 appears to be missing from the CSO 1/3 book, according to the link ..... which doesn't mean that the file is lost (and obviously it isn't lost, because someone found it and made a typewritten transcript of it). 2. Douglas via
    3. Hi List, A long shot request coming up ......... Is anyone researching the convict John Golder, a shoemaker & tanner by trade, who was assigned to Samuel Horton in December 1825? I have some transcriptions of correspondence dealing with a charge against Golder for disobedience, dating from November 1826; the correspondence then goes on to detail a bun-fight which took place between Benjamin Horne and Samuel Horton over the handling of the case. The first letter in the correspondence is from Benjamin Horne and is dated 11th October, 1826. The opening line is: "Sir, I have received your letter and beg to inform you that whatever may be your opinion of Golder's behaviour I shall take the liberty of judging for myself and I shall not succumb to any impertinent interference in the discharge of my magisterial duties." Unfortunately the source for these transcriptions is not mentioned. I'm guessing by the look of the content that it comes from a file in the Colonial Secretary's Office correspondence, as there are some letters written by Samuel Horton addressed to the Lieut Governor. If anyone recognises the correspondence and can let me know the source, I would be grateful. Douglas

    3. Don't want to dampen your enthusiasm, Meryl, but this index is not as good as it could be. It still sends you to the old document viewer for some searches. Sometimes it goes to the actual page, other times to the first page of the document? It is annoying to have to remember to set the search to "all" every time when that should be the default. The search "within the results" is best done in the lefthand panel. The box top left doesn't do anything useful. The list needs to provide more information (such as locality) so that sensible choices can be made instead having to open every document to find the one required. This additonal infomation is available in many of the indexes - it was used for the previous search pages. Why label items with "given name not recorded" when "male/female" was used in the old index. Don't bother with the zoom button on the display - it jumps from full page to a single word with no steps in between. Use the mouse wheel instead. The thumbnail images are pointless and only serve to increase the number of pages to scroll through instead of providing a convenient listing. There is no difference in the number of items displayed between list and thumbnail views. Why isn't the document image full-screen? It could be twice as large. Click on the hyperlinked document reference and a full page version of the document viewer opens. Where is the help page to explain how the different functions work? It is possible to log in and save lists, but where is the registration page? Still, despite these inadequacies, it is much better - I have been able to unravel a series of relationships in the last few days which I could never have done in a reasonable time using the old system. -- Regards Mike Hurburgh --- This email is free from viruses and malware because avast! 1. Re: [AUS-Tas] Honora Coughlan
    2. Peter Oakley via
    3. Hi Pat, The late Garry Wilson offered a likely prospect for Honora Coughlan when he theorised about my ancestor, William Clark and James Peevor Clark being her brothers a couple of years gone on the list. He mentioned an Honora Cochrean who married a John Williams. This marriage took place 8 Feb. 1830 at Launceston. - http://stors.tas.gov.au/RGD36-1-1p257j2k Though it doesn't show age, this girl was "born in the colony" and couldn't write. She next appears in a marriage to Howard/Howell Baxter at Launceston, 27 Oct. 1845 - http://stors.tas.gov.au/RGD37-1-4p367j2k She is described as a widow and her age 32. So she was born circa 1813. In an insolvency case against her husband, Howell Baxter in 1846 its stated that Norah Williams resided with Baxter for 10-12 years before receiving information from a friend that he (Williams) had died. So the first marriage couldn't have lasted very long before she left Williams - http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/36244635?searchTerm="howell baxter"&searchLimits=l-advstate=Tasmania|||sortby=dateAsc Honora Baxter is recorded as dying in Launceston 15 Feb,.1872 aged 59, which again reflects a birth date of 1813 - http://stors.tas.gov.au/RGD35-1-41p4j2k Could the surname Cochrean have been misheard or mistranslated from Cocklin/Coughlan/Coghlan?? Certainly a variety of spellings for Coughlin in the records to justify such. There doesn't seem to be a baptism for a Honora/h/Nora Cochrane in the early records of Knopwood for 1813 or either side of that date. Further research is probably needed to see if she was in fact, Honora Coughlan but it gives a start... 3. Hello, Is it possible to find out if my ancestor was recorded as occupier/owner of his store or any other information about him if he was a storekeeper on Campbell Street Hobart 1856-1870? Would there be anything online or would I have to organise research to be done for me in Tasmania? His name was John Williams. I did email the archives about it a while ago and didn't hear back from them.
