    3. Hi Ione, >From the information found by Bob, Thomas WRIGHT and Elizabeth FITZGERALD were the parents of your Sarah. Found on the Convict Stockade website - ELIZABETH FITZGERALD - born about 1760, tried at the Old Bailey on 13 December 1786 for stealing a cotton gown, sentenced to transportation for seven years, and a First Fleeter who arrived on "Lady Penryn" in 1788. Sent to Norfolk Island aboard "Sirius" on 4 March 1790, and returned to Port Jackson onboard "Kitty" in 1793. She is shown as a widow from the parish of St Giles in the Field in London. 1. [AUS-Tas] Looking for Ellen Clancy
    2. Laine Clancy via
    3. Hi All Hoping someone can do a look up for an Ellen Clancy she was in Oatlands in 1855 when she was a witness at her sisters wedding. Looking for a marriage or a death. She wasn't born in Australia and she would have been born between approximately 1830 and 1840. If I can find what happened to her then you will hear the sounds of crashing as the final piece in one of my brick walls will fall. I have been trying to find my original Patrick Clancy's 3 daughters, have his son and I have now established that the girls below are ours: Jane Clancy married George Lloyd at Campbelltown in 1852 they moved to Victoria; Mary Clancy married Thomas (Joseph) Murphy at Oatlands in 1855 and lived at Forest Hall, Cleveland. Ellen is the missing sister and its the first time I have had a name for her. I have been doing this research for 37 years and being able to prove third daughter is connected would be very satisfying. Hoping someone can help. Laine Clancy Sunny Newcastle, NSW PS. I really enjoy reading about everyone's different stories

    3. I got some angry replies about my post. Ralph Reed has been utterly scrupulous about getting permission from me to use my family names, and I gave it because I'm not trying to make money out of the family histories I write. I would be surprised if he's trying to rip anyone off, and I doubt he makes anything out of his CDs. It looks like a labour of love to me, but to each his/her own. As a published writer who has been ripped off by Eurpoean publishers and plagiarised by other "writers", I'm fairly sensitive about this. Susan Geason

My Great Grandfather, Donald Alexander Richardson was a horsemaster for the Briseis Mine at derby and was taken by the flood when he was in the stables unhitching the horses and could not hear the water coming. His wife, my great Grandmother, Florence Ellen Richardson (nee Hills) was watching from their home up on the hill. Very sad. Florence never remarried and passed away in 1979, aged 92. His body was never found. http://www.utas.edu.au/library/companion_to_tasmanian_history/B/Briseis%20Dam%20Disaster.htm The Ringarooma River flowed backwards for 6 miles before it changed back, from the water from the Cascade Dam regards Warren -----Original Message----- From: Judy H Sent: Saturday, October 18, 2014 1:01 PM To: aus-tasmania@rootsweb.com Subject: [AUS-Tas] Deaths in 1929 Tasmanian floods? The new Launceston flood levees have been in the news this week. Launceston's most severe flooding was in 1929. Some of the comments made suggested that 26 people had died in the 1929 Launceston floods. I don't think this is correct. The Launceston floods were severe, but the disaster spread across the northern half of the state. The mining town of Derby in the NE, Longford in the central north, and the Ulverstone region in the NW were severely affected too. At the time, the newspapers stated that there had been 22 deaths: 14 at Derby, when the Cascade Dam burst and flooded the tin mine, and 8 at the Gawler River, a tributary of the Leven River at Ulverstone, when a motor carrying 9 plunged into the river (one boy survived). Does anyone know of any others? As far as I know, there weren't any deaths in Launceston caused directly by the flooding, though there was extensive property damage. There are lots of references on Trove, April 1929, for those interested. Judy

    3. Pretty sure Judy has hit it on the head. A later version appears as "The Tasmanian" 1839 but its noted it relates to the merger of the "Tasmanian and Austral-Asiatic review" - http://catalogue.statelibrary.tas.gov.au/item/?subject=Hobart+(Tas.)+-+Newspapers&i=175&id=127279 I hope they get this funny little run up on "Trove" shortly. I recall using the 1832 editions to find trial details that weren't recorded anywhere else !!. They fill gaps where there may be no other source references at all. I want them to get the "The Derwent star and Van Diemen's Land intelligencer" up there as well even if its just for the significance of being the first Tasmanian newspaper - http://catalogue.statelibrary.tas.gov.au/item/?q=Derwent+Star&i=1&id=131045 Cheers, Peter On Sun, Oct 26, 2014 at 7:26 PM, Douglas Burbury via < aus-tasmania@rootsweb.com> wrote: > Thanks Judy, > > I think this is the paper in question, and the details you provided back > up my shred of memory about the merger with the Austral-Asiatic Review. > > It means that I need to raise a new source reference for this > "Tasmanian", as it is clearly not exactly equal to the "Tasmanian and > Austral-Asiatic Review". > > Douglas > > On 26/10/2014 5:01 PM, Judy H wrote: > > Could be this one, Douglas. the dates fit, which isn't the case with > > others with similar titles. > > > >> From the Tas State Library catalogue: > > > > Title: The Tasmanian and southern literary & political journal > > Publisher: Hobart Town [Tas.] : Robert L. 3. Hi everyone, I'm a bit confused as to the name of an early Van Diemen's Land newspaper, and I'm hoping someone can clarify. The following link refers to a newspaper titled "The Tasmanian" which was published in (and presumably at least a few months before and after) December 1832. http://www.law.mq.edu.au/research/colonial_case_law/tas/cases/case_index/1832/harmer_v_sadler/ Which newspaper was this exactly? I guess it was the "Tasmanian", huh. I recall that there was a merger between a newspaper with a similar name and the "Austral-Asiatic Review", the result of which subsequently became known as the "Tasmanian and Austral-Asiatic Review". Is this the same newspaper? Douglas
