    1. Re: [AUS-Tas] Looking for Ellen Clancy
    2. Peter Oakley via
    3. Its unlikely Ellen Neil who married William Clancy at Bothwell ( http://stors.tas.gov.au/RGD37-1-6p4j2k ) is the same individual that appeared as marriage witness' to Mary Clancy's in 1855 ( http://stors.tas.gov.au/RGD37-1-14p461j2k) as one of them signed with an X while the other wrote her own name. I thought Ellen might have travelled to Melbourne with her sister and brother in law, the Lloyds when they departed on the Yarra Yarra in 1853 and been one of the Ellen Clancy's' that married in Victoria in 1861 or 1875 but since she witnessed a marriage in 1855 in Tassie that ideas shot. Patrick Clancy Senior, appears in the Campbell Town Lower Court records a number of times up until his death in 1859 as a constable being drunk or not doing his duty. Mary Clancy, Senior also makes one appearance but none of the girls seem to have got in any scrapes to warrant an entry. A clue might lie in what happened to Mary Ann Gereghty/Clancy/Chalins? If Ellen remained a spinster she may have continued to reside in her mother's household. Mary Ann Clancy remarried to John Chalins in 1866 ( http://stors.tas.gov.au/RGD37-1-25p16j2k ) Mary Murphy a marriage witness?. A John Chelins died at Westbury in 1878 ( http://stors.tas.gov.au/RGD35-1-47p173j2k ) and his death age equates very well with the John Chalins of 1866 marriage age. Can't seem to find much in relation to Chalins/Chelins surname other than Henrietta Chelins and Samuel Barnard who must have been related to him as Barnard was informant on his death certificate. Pity the CSO24 "Eliza" references don't give any more details other than 4 children arriving with Patrick. If the children had been named it would have been another proof of Ellen's existence. Since the 27th Regiment moved around to different posting you would assume the children if baptised would be in different locations - UK, Gibraltar, South Africa etc. I have an Irish ancestor who was in the 99th Regiment and settled in Tasmania. Same circumstances with his children and to make it more confusing being Roman Catholic some of the baptism's were in Latin. We eventually found the right baptism at Portsea where the regiment departed from but in Latin form. We recently had a post on the list regarding Latin translation so there's another smoke screen layer you have to penetrate if you find them!. Certainly Ellen Clancy's existence is very perplexing at the moment and I hope some clue comes to the fore to help Laine identify her... 3. I last learnt Latin 50 years ago but here goes Contaserunt I think this suggests that they were previously married in a protestant church in Ireland, and that Richard was a soldier in the 40th Regiment of foot Translation: JOINED in marriage are : Richard Haim and Margaret Maher (40 REGIMENT) who previously contrascerunt AT Templemore in Ireland before the PROTESTANT CLERGYMAN (the third ? fourth day of October, 1821) Witnesses: Michael Kinsela and Catherine Jennings. RGD36/1/1/1047 January 21st 1827 Roman Catholic Church Hobart, Tasmania: In matrimonium conjuncti sunt: Ricardus hames et Margarita maher (de 40 Reg) qui prius contrascerunt APUD Templemore in Hibernia coram ministro protestante (tertia ant quaria die Octobris 1821) Testibus: Micaele Kinsela et catharine Jennings. I have used Google to translate the passages but I think it may have made errors but I have no Latin knowledge. Any help or suggestions appreciated. RGD36/1/1/1047 January 21st 1827 Roman Catholic Church Hobart, Tasmania: In matrimonium conjuncti sunt: Ricardus hames et Margarita maher (de 40 Reg) qui prius contrascerunt april Templemore in Hibernia coram ministro protestante (tertia ant quaria die Octobris 1821) Testibus: Micaele Kinsela et catharine Jennings. Google Translation: The marriage are linked: Richard Haim and Margaret Maher (about 40 Kg) who previously contrascerunt April Templemore in Ireland before the officer to the witness (the third or fourth day of October, 1821) Witnesses: Michael Kinsela and Catherine Jennings. RGD32/1/1/2375 January 15 1827 Roman Catholic Church Hobart, Tasmania: Baptisata est Anna. Parentibus: Ricardo Hames et Margarita Maher (de 40 Reg) Sponsoribus: Michaele Kinsela et catherine Jennings. Google Translation: Anna was baptized. Parents: Richard Hamer and Margaret Maher (about 40 Kg) Sponsors: Michael Kinsela and Catherine Jennings. Also if there is anyone on the list that is good at reading old hand writing that is poorly written and slightly smudged I would also really like to get some assistance with the witnesses names on a 1847 marriage certificate that I purchased some time ago from Victoria. I think it is likely that the witness Margaret on the cert is the mother of the Bride but with a new last name due to remarriage. The Bride is the Anna(Anne Haimes) above and I think it likely that the witness is her mother Margaret If I can work out her new married name then it will be a real break through for me and one that has had me stuck for some time. Margaret's husband Richard died in 1833 leaving her a widow.I have been unable to find a record for a new marriage for Margaret but it is possible that it could have taken place in either Tasmania, Victoria or South Australia as at least two of her son's moved inter-state. Any help with this would also be very appreciate. Thank you for taking the time to read my post Regards Mabel

    3. Good afternoon List Members. I am hoping someone has researched the LEHNER family, more particularly Ernest Joseph LEHNER also known as Joseph Wintle LEHNER. Ernest married my Great Aunt Martha Jane KOGLIN on 25 March 1902 at St Marys Church, St Marys, Tasmania. Children of this couple are: Pearl Jane LEHNER born 1903, married Erskine Isaac SALTER 1921 and passed away 1977 Herman Joseph LEHNER born 1904, married Margery May BROOKS 1927 and passed away 1946 Launceston Alma Beatrice LEHNER born 1906, married Norman Clarence MOUNTNEY 1927 and passed away 1973 Edward Clement LEHNER born 1909, married Mary Hazel NORTON and passed away 1986 Masie Martha LEHNER born 1910, married Gordon Wallace MOUNTNEY 1929 and passed away 1992 I have most of the information for this family but what I am really missing is a photograph of Ernest Joeph/Joseph Wintle LEHNER and Martha Jane LEHNER nee KOGLIN. I am hoping someone, somewhere has a photograph of this couple and/or individual photographs of them please. Cheers Judi

    3. Hello Meryl, I would like the following information about Thomas Powell who is my great great grandfather to be placed in your newsletter please. "I wonder if anyone knows the cemetery where Thomas Powell is buried - he was working on a farm in Eastbourne owned by a Mr. Hewitt. The following is a newspaper report of his inquest. He was born in 1815 and originated from Carmarthen, South Wales, and was a convict arriving on Norfolk Island in November 1844 on the Agincourt and then transferred to Tasmania in 1846 on the Lady Franklin. Also does anyone know if there are photographs available of the convicts or any other further information about him would be very welcome please. AVOCA. (From our own Correspondent 16.4.1880.) The inquest on the body of Thomas Powell, who met his death by falling off a stack at Eastbourne, was held here last Saturday, Mr Stephen Grueber, Sen., being Coroner, and Mr C. W. Foster foreman of a jury of seven. There being nothing of a mysterious nature in connection with his death, the proceedings were of a simple form. The evidence of Mr Hewitt and one of his men went to show that they were in the yard, where the deceased was thatching a stack, when suddenly they heard him exclaim " Oh !" and saw him fall from the stack. On going to him, they found that the poor fellow was quite dead. Dr. Hoskins held a post-mortem, and found that death resulted from two bones of the neck having been broken. A verdict of accidental death was therefore returned. The deceased was a quiet old man and was spoken of by his employer as being a trustworthy servant." Kind regards Eve.

    3. Ann etc, Hannah, and maybe Hanora where in effect the same name - as were Ellen, Nell, Helene, Elinor and so on. I have Frances in my family at several generations - commonly called Fanny. Same thing. I would not rule out Anne, Jane and Hannah being the same person - if all else fits, then they almost certainly are. Especially if you cannot find a death! Family history states that there where no other related Clancy's in Tasmania at that time. My Ellen (if its her) was the witness at her sisters marriage. The girls certainly didn't arrive later, they arrived as a family group in 1850 with mother Mary and father Patrick he was a guard on a convict ship after spending 22 years and 107 days in the English Army, 27th regiment of Foot. I will keep digging.
