Hi David, TAMIOT has Robert and Charlotte Woods cemetery details for their burials at Queenborough Cemetery. Robert's mother is also buried with them. She is listed as Eliza Wheelwright. Eliza Wheelwright died in 1896 aged 82 - http://stors.tas.gov.au/RGD35-1-15p65j2k In the death notice in the Mercury (9 Jan 1896) it is noted she was a colonist of over 70 years. She is listed as a widow on her death certificate but I can't see any other Wheelwrights anywhere on civil registrations for BD or M's? Thank you Trish, Lee-Ann and Sally for your various replies. There was a child born in Launceston to Ellen SMITH and Henry TURNER on 28/10/1870 in Launceston and in the records she is named Frances Mary SMITH and was brought up as the daughter of Francis Thomas KEY and Ellen SMITH. Mercy Ellen (Helen) Maria KEY was born 13/7/1872 in Launceston to F T and E KEY. Their next 6 children were born in Seymour, Victoria. One of them is my Grandmother Dora Jane KEY. BENBOW is the maiden name of my Great grand fathers mother. I have not ruled out the possibility of Ellen SMITH being of convict heritage at this stage. I am still interested to hear if the Church records or Baptismal records mentioned in my earlier email are available anywhere in Tasmania. Hello List, Just wondered if anybody has come across this fellow ? Robert Wood married a Charlotte Watford on 21/10/1851 at the Independent Chapel in Brisbane street, Hobart. At this time Robert called himself a Shipwright, and by the time of his death on 10th Dec 1910 he was aged 80 years of age. I note there is a very likely Baptism for Robert on 27th Sep 1830, again in Hobart. In this baptism we see Robert's father is another Robert Wood, but a Stonemason. I'd like to hear from someone who could advise further on this Stonemason. It seems to me there area couple of likely parents for the Robert Wood born 7th Sep 1830 in Hobart: The Eliza Tilley one on 17th Dec 1829 or the Eliza Clark on 25th Aug 1834. Cheers Dave Cripps in Hobart -- Best Wishes Dave Cripps, Tasmania <cripps@netspace.net.au>
Hi Laurie, Working only from the date given, there is one unnamed female registered as born on 10/7/1850 - however it was in Hobart. The mother was Mary Sullivan, father name not recorded. RGD 33/ 2540/1850. Looking at it online seems to say Fem: Con: per Barretto Informant is Surgeon Supt Convict Ship Barretto. Unfortunately, this child appears to have died, although she did have at least one more illegitimate daughter. She was given ToL in 1857 ................ No Ellen Smiths born between 1847 and 1852 Ellen Smith married Francis Thomas Key 1/1/1872, age 22 he age 27 at Launceston Reg 346/1872 rgd 37 - see online. If she was born 10/7/1850 she would have been in her 22nd year. Unfortunately none of this is of any help to you except to eliminate the date of birth/registration Cheers Sally -------------------------------------------------- From: "June Laurie via" <aus-tasmania@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, November 20, 2014 2:26 PM To: <AUS-TASMANIA@rootsweb.com> Subject: [AUS-Tas] Marriage Francis Thomas KEY and Ellen SMITH 1/1/1872 > I have for many years tried to find who the parents of my great > grandmother Ellen (Smith) KEY are. > She was married in the Parish Church of the United Church of England and > Ireland, Launceston 1/1/1872. > > Our family bible states she was born at Launceston Tasmania 10/7/1850 > however I cannot find a record of birth for her. He married in Victoria to MCNAUGHTON Irene Patricia 1934 reg no 7434, assumably. It is the only Thomas Henry WEBB on the index. POSSIBLY she was the Irene (only) born to Wm Malcolm NCNAUGHTON and Flor(ence or a) OBRIEN at R(ich)mond 1915 reg 25117. As index for births stops 1920 on cd and earlier on line, you will have to dig for the children's names. I could not see a death on the death index for anyone with parents Thomas William and Irena Patricia. I have for many years tried to find who the parents of my great grandmother Ellen (Smith) KEY are. She was married in the Parish Church of the United Church of England and Ireland, Launceston 1/1/1872. Our family bible states she was born at Launceston Tasmania 10/7/1850 however I cannot find a record of birth for her. Is it possible that there may be a record of Baptism available? Is it possible that the records of the United Church of England and Ireland exist and would they show more details than the State of Tasmania marriage registration? On her death certificate at Seymour Victoria 21 September 1920, the details were put in by a family friend and only show father as Unknown Smith Station Manager and mother as Unknown Smith maiden name unknown. Tasmania appears to be the only state which doesn't have Electoral Rolls online after 1954. Is there any particular reason for this? How do I discover where relatives lived after that please? Regards, Val DATE
Thankyou everyone who helped me with the GARDNER marriage and the rest I found all that you have suggested and more Thankyou Jill MORLEY
Val, If you are in Tasmania, there are likely to be copies of post-1954 electoral rolls on microfilm in your local regional library. Coverage might be intermittent, but they usually go up to fairly modern times (until the point where the Electoral Commission started pulling them out of libraries). This is all Know at the moment But too excited to wait? I am hoping to buy this one also? Thank you in anticipation Jill
Jill, Different Fredericks in each case, as Mary Jane was still described as Frederick's wife in the 1879 court hearing, post-dating the Frederick and Ellen business. http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/143011626 Douglas On 20/11/2014 9:30 AM, Douglas via wrote: > Jill, > > There's an article in the Mercury newspaper which mentions a > "matrimonial squabble" between Frederick and Mary Jane: > > http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/8982843 > > Was Frederick a furrier and dealer in skins? > > trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/65978214 > > Possibly he didn't pay maintenance to his wife and was jailed (if it is > the same Frederick Gardner), column 2, 4th paragraph: > > trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/page/6156375 > > This Frederick's wife was named Ellen, so it might not be the same > person unless your Frederick married again after his separation from > Mary Jane. Jill, There's an article in the Mercury newspaper which mentions a "matrimonial squabble" between Frederick and Mary Jane: http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/8982843 Was Frederick a furrier and dealer in skins? trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/65978214 Possibly he didn't pay maintenance to his wife and was jailed (if it is the same Frederick Gardner), column 2, 4th paragraph: trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/page/6156375 This Frederick's wife was named Ellen, so it might not be the same person unless your Frederick married again after his separation from Mary Jane. Hi Tas, Looks like Ada's brother Charles Herbert Smith was in a bit of trouble for a larceny at New Norfolk and failure to maintain his family. Living at Macquarie Plains in 1917. There's a record for him and mug shot in the Hobart Goal prison records (top part burnt off!!) online - http://stors.tas.gov.au/GD63-1-4 go to page 5025. Does he look anything like the pencil sketch you have of Ada?
