    3. Hi Betty, Have a look at this from TAHO - http://stors.tas.gov.au/SWD37-1-2 Scroll down to page 103-104 and the next page 105-106 (St Joseph's Orphanage) Annie Lyons is towards the bottom of page 104 and there is a minor reference to May Lyons on page 106. The case number you mention for Annie 1489 attaches to her but 2901 seems related to the girl below her on the page Ellen Louisa Lynskey. The entry does at least give a birth date a place for Annie Lyons though no parent info... 3. A difficult one Betty, You would think Rebecca Annie May Lyons born and died hobart 1873 might be one of the family. Her parents Sarah Ann Godfrey and Lyons unknown. That doesn't fit your me nation of the mother being a Langdon, unless she married again. The fact that the children were in the orphanage might point to their mother having been left or widowed. Might be worth investigating. 3. Dear Peter Received your marvellous reply a short time ago, and now after I have wiped the tears away, I am now writing to thank you so very much for this information. Only someone else who has searched so hard and long will understand the elation I feel. Thirty two years is such a long time thinking I was on the right track, but not getting anywhere. William Brown's death just gave his death as born Tasmania so wasn't conclusive, but finding George Brown born Deloraine gave hope. What a list of descendants now for John Brown and Mary Ann Smith, as I can now the combine two seperate databases. I guess we take the TPI entries as being the correct birthdates, seeing they have come before the baptisms.... Odd isn't it how things such as wedding dates (and close to in another date) keep one going and the fact that each morning hearing my husband in full voice I felt that he had to come from this Welshman and the short stature of his ancestors, and some of today's descendants, are because of Mary Ann. Call me mad if you wish, but was that enough to keep me at what seemed a hopeless quest. Thank you so very much Peter, forever in your debt. Many of you here will know of our 32 year search for the death of my husband's great grandfather GEORGE BROWN. Very happy to report that, with thanks to the wonderful TROVE, we finally found his death 17 Jan 1925 at West Burnie, living with a new lady and new family. All is good there though and we are corresponding with the second family. As suspected GEORGE BROWN's death certificate gives his birthplace as DELORAINE. One answer leads to another question! There is no obvious birth for GEORGE BROWN on TPI. So we are hopeful that there will be baptism records that may hold the key to his parentage. >From information we lean towards JOHN BROWN and MARY ANN SMITH as parents, but given the number of Browns at Deloraine in the given time frame we desperately need proof. John Brown and Mary Ann Smith had an UNNAMED MALE at Deloraine on 26 Dec 1855 (registered at Westbury) and a WILLIAM BROWN born and reg. at Deloraine 20 Aug 1857. There were other children born in Launceston and Deloraine. Great grandfather GEORGE BROWN married SUSANNAH KNIGHTS 25 Dec 1876, his age given as 21 and Susannah's as 18 but she was still only 17. George's death certificate gives his age as 69, so points to birth 1855-1856. Susannah's sister HARRIET KNIGHTS married a WILLIAM BROWN 20 Jan 1881 and we feel we may have two brothers marrying two sisters. Harriet died very young and when William Brown died in Launceston 27 Jun 1924, he was then married to MARGARET MARSHALL. We have a possible birth range 1857-1858 for him. I have much research on JOHN BROWN and MARY ANN SMITH who married 25 Dec 1846 at York Street Chapel, Launceston - Baptist Congregational rites. It would be wonderful if this reearch could be put to use.... If any one can help or even has some thoughts about these people we would be most grateful. 3. Hi Susan The book you are looking for is probably A Drift of Derwent Ducks - not Notorious Strumpets which lists pre-1830 female convict arrivals.. A Drift of Derwent Ducks is about the female convicts who arrived on the "Australasia" in 1849 - and one of them was Judith Beaky (not Johanna). Judith's father, Michael, was transported in 1852. Is this the information you are looking for? His family groups include the descendants of James Arthur CLARK [1867-1920] and Edith Lily BOULTER [1868-1933] paternal grandparents and David George TRIFFETT [1871-1950] and Mary Hannah Frances COLEMAN [1880-1964] maternal grandparents. Sadly many of the people with personal memories of these ancestors are no longer with us and for some of them we have hit brick walls. The known information is that Edith Boulter was the daughter of Henry John BOULTER [1812-1898] transported to Hobart from England with seven year sentence in 1833 on board the Enchantress. In 1856 he married Margaret BRADBURNE [1834-1910] transported to Hobart from Ireland with seven year sentence [ticket of leave 1853] in 1853. One of their children was Edith Lily BOULTER. Many Hannah Frances COLEMAN also seems to be descendant from a person transported to Hobart i.e. James COLEMAN arrived on 1830 on the Red Rover sentenced to seven years. My biggest brick wall is trying to find out how James Arthur CLARK came to Australia? Having searched numerous records I still cannot locate him. He was born in 1865 or 1867 in Stepney, London the son of William Fredrick Clark and Elizabeth Rebecca Welsh [this name not yet confirmed]. He next turns up at his wedding in 1896 in New Norfolk [marriage certificate held] and then he turns up in Fremantle where their first child is born in 1897. Two other children were born there and the last child [my late father in law] was born in 1903 in New Norfolk. So they get around the question is how? Any information would be greatly appreciated. With thanks to all, Gillian ----------------------------- Gillian Clark LL: 03 9371 9299 M: 0407390970

    3. Hi Listers, ...and a belated HNY to all !! I came across this marriage notice in the Mercury 5 Nov 1942 - MARRIAGES BRITTON-DILLON:-On September 5, 1942, at Ellendale,, by Rev Father Adlum, Beryl Elizabeth, younger ,daughter of Mrs and the late Maurice Dillon, Ellendale, and great grand" daughter of the late James Clark, Rockmount, Ellendale (formerly of England), to Allen, son of Mr and Mrs Darcy Britton, of New Norfolk. I'm wondering if anyone has connections with the above couple or if anyone knows of the family... Intrigued by the line... late James Clark, Rockmount, Ellendale (formerly of England) ? I've never seen that snippet anywhere in all my endeavour's on James Peevor/Clark. Wondering where it originated? Cheers, Peter

    3. Hi Suzanne I'm pretty interested in the O'Rourkes from Lebrina. Heritage Lilydale, which is the local history group, is working on the list of those who served in WW1 and who were associated with the Lilydale District. Loone's history of the North East lists 3 O'Rourkes and one O'Bourke which I think is a typo (there are several other typos as well). O'Rourke F O'Rourke T O'Rourke James O'Bourke Lawrence I have been able to find war service records for Terrence, James and Lawrence, but not for the mysterious F. But it certainly could be Francis Alexander. There were several other lads from the Lilydale region in New Zealand at the time of the outbreak of WW1 - apparently wages were higher there. I've not yet seen the Honour Board for Lebrina, so it will be interesting to see what is on that. The list of Returned Soldiers in the Lilydale Municipality (1923) doesn't include any O'Rourkes or O'Bourkes anywhere in the district so by 1923, they had all moved on. I suspect that Francis Alexander O'Rourke c 1890 - 1956 New Zealand is another son he also went to the War but lists his NOK as his aunt Mrs Thomas O'Rourke of Spotswood Victoria coincidently when Arthur John Russell O'Rourke moved to Victoria he lived in Spotswood also. Electoral Rolls 1914 suggest a Timothy O'Rourke also resided in the same area as Arthur James & Lizzie O'Rourke but I can't find anything on him after the E/Roll listing in 1914 I have all the information on the O'Rourke's from TROVE regarding The Premier Hotel and the Orchard they had near Lebrina etc, its mainly the exact number of children and their names I'm interested in at the moment. 3. Hi List , After a walk along the wharf area in Launceston we came across the L W Smith building ,was this the old Rapson Tyre Company factory as well ?. A sign on these buildings would be of interest to people. Hoping some kind person can answer this for us. Also on the same walk we saw what I believe to be the hull of the dredge "Ponrabbel" if this is so it sad to see our history just rotting away. The dredge played a big part in our river's history. My grandfather worked on this vessel at George Town, helping to remove the " Porpoise Rock". Regards Pat

    3. Folks I'm researching the great-great aunt and need information about her lover Dennis O'Reilly/Riley/O'Riley's family. I'm pretty sure the one I want was married to Margaret Rooney in June 1866 - they're both listed as "free". They had a son James Riley in August 1867. I'm pretty sure both James and Margaret died before 1876 when he was mixed up with Sarah. O'Reilly died of a fractured skull on the rivulet in Hobart in 1884 at the age of 60 and was intestate. The court gave the money to his daughter Anne Therese O'Reilly, but I can't find any other trace of her, including a birth date. I would assume she was at least 18 by 1884, otherwise a guardian would have got the money. Any clues? PS: I knew about the convict police thesis because one of my ancestors was a convict policeman who did extremely well for nearly 20 years and was then bounced out for taking a bribe. Regards Susan

    3. Hello Doug, Sound very much like to me that he was advertising he would participate publicly in a bare knuckle fight. (Possibly he was hoping to make some money for himself.) These fights were often illegal, but extremely popular with both ordinary and aristocratic persons. So it would seem there was so much interest in the fight (and probably a significant amount of betting involved) a massive crowd assembled. They then possibly became more like a mob, "terrifying" the ordinary citizens, especially as it states that there were "several thousand convicts". That in itself would be enough to severely worry the local law in 1822, of whom there may not have been that many. Unless there is possibly a newspaper of the time surviving (though it might be worth re-checking), it may have only been fully described on his record. Regards, Wynnette. -----Original Message----- From: aus-tasmania-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:aus-tasmania-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Doug Hille via Sent: Sunday, 4 January 2015 8:39 AM To: AUS-TASMANIA@rootsweb.com Subject: [AUS-Tas] Convict Constable John Lamph Thanks to Douglas Burberry I’ve been able to piece together some more information about my ggg grandfather, John Lamph. He was in continual trouble after he arrived, receiving a total of about 200 lashes for various misdemeanours. Years ago I was in Hobart and found the following about him on microfiche in the library. "7/3/1822 Causing to be made known he would publicly fight and thereby inducing several thousand convicts and other persons illegally to assemble together causing a great affray to the terror of King George III's subjects by publicly fighting - Disobedience of the orders and contempt of the authority of the Superintendent of Police - 50 lashes and to work for two months in the Gaol Gang.” I’ve never been able to find out what this was all about. I’ve searched Trove, but to no avail. Can anybody help me? Regards, Doug Hille in Geelong.
