    2. Mike Hurburgh via
    3. Thanks for letting us know Peter - do you keep a watch on the TAHO site? The comments I made a couple of weeks ago on the previous series released, also apply to this release - there are quite a few discrepancies, ommissions and errors in the descriptions. I presume the LINC search engine searches on the descriptions, so these mistakes are a bit disappointing. Note that the "landholders" referred to are often the original grantees and not necessarily the owners or occupiers at the time of survey. Most of the "maps" are actually survey plans, compiled from one or more actual surveys (the survey field books and the surveyors names are noted). Maps, to me, are printed/published documents, showing mostly topographical details. The series shouldn't have been titled "County Maps" as there is another quite different group of plans called "County Charts" used for a long time by both the Lands Office and the Land Titles Office as working plans to index cadastral surveys. I too have found the answer to one of my long term queries - the original New Town race course was on or adjacent to land owned by an ancestor, but I had found no description of its actual location. A close look at Buckingham 17 and there it is, plotted in its entirety (east of the Main Road through present day Moonah, between Albert Road and Derwent Park Road). Another plan shows the location of the grandstand. If anyone would like some help interpreting these plans and finding information from them I can offer some assistance - I have worked as a surveyor for many years, with experience in using plans such as these. -- Regards Mike Hurburgh --- This email is free from viruses and malware because avast! 1. Re: [AUS-Tas] Cornelius LEARY
    2. Graeme & Wynnette Ford via
    3. Hi Rod, I had correspondence with a Noelene Goodwin many years ago when I was searching for my own O'Leary family. She had researched every (O) Leary family living in Tasmania and had an ancestor Cornelius Leary, whom I believe also lived on the North West Coast. However, from old correspondence, it would seem this Cornelius had a brother John, and she believed she had found them in Joyce Purtscher's Orphans index. Their parents were named. However, she went on to say that their father John and uncle Timothy were transported from County Cork for stealing a cow. So I am afraid, not very likely to be your family. I have found a reference in one of her letters to family stories from two different family sources, saying that this Cornelius was said to be "a bare-back rider in a circus in his youth". Not sure that was ever proved..... I had a quick look at Trove, and there are so many mentions of a Cornelius Leary, you would have to sift through them carefully to hopefully find a mention of yours. Not much help, but it shows the name is not so uncommon as one might think. Cheers, Wynnette. -----Original Message----- From: aus-tasmania-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:aus-tasmania-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of rod via Sent: Thursday, 15 January 2015 3:26 PM To: Aus TAS Subject: [AUS-Tas] Cornelius LEARY Hi Looking for assistance with a Cornelius LEARY born about 1829 possible Ireland father Thaddeo LEARY Thaddeo was believed to be in the 4 Regiment of Foot and died on Norfolk Island 1833 (I cannot find his death), and his wife went back to Ireland Cornelius joined the army either the 12 regiment or the 99th in 1855 and came to Australia serving in Victoria before moving to the Devonport area Tasmania and died 1896 Lefroy Can anyone find any more in formation on him please How would I find Thaddeo Leary's death on Norfolk Island, Any assistance would be most appreciated Rod ------------------------------- AUS-Tasmania Mailing List Website http://www.rootsweb.com/~austashs/ Contact Admin AUS-Tasmania-Admin@rootsweb.com Search the Archive (type AUS-Tasmania in the list box) http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to AUS-TASMANIA-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message ----- No virus found in this message. The family arrived from England (Eastern Emphire- Queensland)) in 1866. Thomas was born in Carrick 1867 and records I have indicate they were in Tasmania for four years I am interested in how they arrived in Tasmania, and if Ephraim or Louisa attended school, any address that the family may have lived during their time in Tasmania. I would be pleased to receive direction on local research opportunities during my stay in Launceston. Elizabeth

Hi Rod, Three children of Thaddeo Leary and Margarita McNeil, Cornelius, Thaddeus and Helena baptised in Hobart 1831 - http://stors.tas.gov.au/RGD32-1-1-p212j2k No sign of Thaddeo in the 4th Regiment on the Redcoats in Australia website (unless a surname variation ?) - http://freepages.history.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~garter1/surnames4th.htm Cornelius Leary appears on the website in the 12th Regiment as a deserter in 1855 - http://freepages.history.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~garter1/surnames4th.htm also appears listed in the 99th Regiment - http://freepages.history.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~garter1/surnames99th.htm If Thaddeo really was in the 4th and died on Norfolk Island the Muster books and pay lists for the 4th Regiment which are part of the AJCP series (available at most large libraries on microfilm) - http://catalogue.nla.gov.au/Record/2074205 would show his pay stopping and possibly cite his death date. That's an alternative if a death or burial can't be found for him... All hinges on him being in the 4th Regiment... I have been a member since the beginning, paying the lesser of two annual subscriptions of $25.00 (if I remember correctly), and even though the information is scant if completely missing on VDL at this stage, I've found some great new information on people I'm researching who spent time in NSW and on NI - it promises to be an amazing resource. Best wishes, Carol Brill.

The originals are held by Public Record Office, London (or whatever the new title is now). Check out the State Library of Queensland website - http://www.slq.qld.gov.au/resources/family-history/blue-books They have this guide - http://www.slq.qld.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0020/132428/SLQ-Info-Guide-3_17-Blue-books-2014-12.pdf Thanks for bring these records to our attention - I had heard of them but forgotten. -- Regards Mike Hurburgh --- This email is free from viruses and malware because avast!
