    1. Re: [AUS-Tas] Cornelius LEARY
    2. Anthony Fletcher via
    3. Hello Rod & Peter The birth registration of Catherine LEARY, born to Cornelius and Susan (nee COOK) LEARY on 29th August 1857, indicates that Cornelius was a private in the 12th Regiment. How common was it for VDL-born men to enlist in a colonial-based regiment? If it is unlikely, then this Cornelius may not be the child of Thaddeus and Margaret (nee McNEIL) LEARY. 1. [AUS-Tas] Diehl / Bollenhagen Marriage Bagdad
    2. Marie via
    3. Dear List, I am researching the above . As yet have had no luck. However I know the following. Bertha Diehl is a daughter of Carl Johann Diehl & his wife Johanna App. The family arrived on the 'America' July 1855 as Immigrants on the Bounty Plan. Carl & his son were employed at Sayes Court, Bagdad by Frederick Edmund Chalmers as a Gardener & General Servant. Carl & his wife leave the Colony for New Zealand in 1874 on the "Pet" bound for Oamaru, Otago. It would appear that his daughter Bertha marries [but where? N.Z. or the Colony] as she is the mother of 2 children both born in N.Z. & whose father is August Bollenhagen. described as a Confectioner. He dies in N.Z 1867, but Bertha returns to Hobart where she dies in 1873 age 32yrs. There is a suggestion that Bollenhagen lived & worked in the Bagdad area at one time. Does anyone have any information of these 2 families? I would be grateful for any leads. Marie Waddell.

    3. This is her! Her mother was Elizabeth Camburn. Suzanna, thanks are scarcely enough. Her son Paris Webster was a carpenter/builder, so perhaps he introduced Grace to cabinetmaker Thomas Goldfinch. Be nice to know if he had been married and when he died. So, sometime between 1911 and 1916 Elizabeth came to Victoria, a single mother aged about 50 and proceeded to marry there twice and lived to 91. 3. Related to this family that I received so much help about, this Frederick William Webster in Hobart had one sister, GRACE ELIZABETH WEBSTER, born Whitstable Kent in 1864. (You can see that he named his only daughter Grace.) She is in the England censuses up to 1911, when she was aged about 47, keeping house for a gentleman in Surrey. Grace's skill was as a draper and haberdasher. Her son presumably born out of wedlock, PARIS WEBSTER, born when Grace was 18, trained as a carpenter in England, went to Melbourne and established himself there as a builder and brought up a family. This may be more a Victorian question than Tas but I know that many of you research both. But, can anyone find Grace in Australia after 1911? I can't find her death or marriage in England via FreeBMD. There is also a very tentative suggestion that she went by the surname Goldfinch but I would not put too much stress on that. Any extra eyes on this would be very welcome to descendants of her son. Many thanks Bill Webster Near Sydney -----Original Message----- From: aus-tasmania-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:aus-tasmania-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Bill Webster via Sent: Wednesday, 14 January 2015 12:30 PM To: 'AUS-Tasmania@rootsweb.com' Subject: Re: [AUS-Tas] Webster Thank you Peter and Suzanne. My Mum Ruby Edna (Eddie) PRICE played cricket with East Launceston Ladies and prior to her marriage to my Dad Elvin Joseph (Skeet) WICKS in 1939, the members of the team presented her with saucepans. With it was a typed poem under which the team signed their names. Thought it might be of interest to descendents of these ladies to know that they were playing cricket at that time. TO EDDIE The happy day will shortly come, When you and “Skeet will live as one, We hope that one lives very well, Though at this time we cannot tell. In giving you each coloured pot, We hope they’ll say “Forget-us-not”' And may the sight of cream and green, Remind you of our kind esteem. We know the pots will be of use, As you think out the things to eat. We wish your cooking every luck, For t’would be wrong to poison “Skeet”. A lot of Burgess' living at Geeveston at the time so can't identify who her husband might have been. Little note in children's sport at Franklin (Huon and Derwent Times) from 1940 of a Sylvia Harrison tying for second in a foot race. Under 11 race - so if it was her she was born circa 1930... slim Pickings otherwise..!!. 3. Hi Rod, Appears the details of Thaddeo Leary being in the 4th Regiment and dying on Norfolk Island are a "miss mash" of details. There's a card in the General Index at TAHO that says - Sgt Leary, died 1833 of the 4th Regiment. Connolly burial register. The extract is from J H Cullen's transcript of Father Connolly's records. This Sgt Leary was buried in the old Roman Catholic Cemetery in Hobart. Contingents of the 4th did go to Norfolk Island...so I'm wondering if there has been a confusion of facts jumbled together. The other odd thing is that in the payroll and muster lists of the 4th or "Kings Own" (WO12 Reel 3697 piece 2214 1832-33 & 3698 piece 2215 1833 to end there is no Leary recorded anywhere. Not in the NCO's or the privates?? So I don't know where Sgt Leary of the 4th Regiment came from unless it was a translation error of Cullen and it was some other regimental number ?? TAHO doesn't have the original records for early Roman Catholic registers only the transcript so there's no way to verify the burial details. 3. I seem to have missed the original posted question relating to James Hugh DONOHOE. During the so called Maori wars, now known as the New Zealand Wars, ships were based at Australia station which was Sydney. The Biographical Index of Pukekohe 1850-1925 (Heather A Walden) lists a Hugh Donohoe along with Mary, Mary Jnr and Patrick. The date is 1865 and they were passengers on the Ganges. Reference is the Southern Cross (Auckland) newspaper and this may be found on New Zealand's free paperspast website. Bye Harriet

I should like to see two or three hundred sit down to dinner to celebrate the day - not like last year, to have, ten or a dozen people, to the exclusion of those who could not afford ten dollars. Five dollars should be enough for a good dinner and a bottle of wine for each gentleman.
