Hi Carol, Doesn't appear as though Martha Ann Cook was buried at New Norfolk. She doesn't appear in the Old New Norfolk Cemetery book I have nor Stephens St (St Matthews). A possibility she was buried in one of the Methodist cemeteries in New Norfolk but more likely she's somewhere close to her husband... Dear All, I've recently discovered a "new" burial at the above church, now my home - here's the announcement, in the Mercury of 29 January 1878: "COOK. - On the 28th inst., at Old Beach, William Cook, aged 36. The funeral service will be read at the Wesleyan Chapel, at 3 o'clock THIS DAY (Tuesday)." William was married to Martha Ann Childs and they had two children, a son, William Henry Sunderland Cook, b. 1874, and a daughter, Florence Mary Cook, b. 1875. Sadly Martha Ann died in the New Norfolk Asylum 24 February 1884 - she'd been admitted by her father the previous December according to her case file, online at the Archives website. I have two questions about this family and hope someone can help. Firstly - where was Martha Ann buried after her death in 1884? Could she be buried here with her husband or were all burials held somewhere in New Norfolk? (William Cook's gravestone hasn't survived so I have no idea where he/they might be buried.) The next question is the fate of their daughter Florence Mary Cook - I have her brother's details and know who his descendants are but can't find a thing about Florence after her birth. Fingers crossed someone can help, and best wishes, Carol Brill, Briggs Road, Old Beach.
Dear Listers, Five or six years ago I posted an enquiry about Catherine Clark/e (1805-1856), whose origins remain a mystery to me. I have discovered a little more about her and I now renew my enquiry in the hope that someone has come across further information about Catherine's life, particularly her early life. According to Catherine’s own account she was born in Sydney in 1805. I can find no other record, apart from her own account, of her birth or baptism. It was a largish family: in 1836 she said that her mother, two brothers and three sisters were still living. I do not know their names or whether some or all remained in Sydney. Catherine came to Launceston from Sydney in August 1822 on the colonial schooner, ‘Governor Brisbane’. This was the only Sydney/Tasmania journey undertaken by the Governor Brisbane. Some of the passengers on this voyage are named in contemporary news accounts, but Catherine is not named. One who is named was Anne Clarke, a servant to Mrs Reibey, a passenger who made a brief visit to Tasmania. Newspaper accounts don’t indicate whether Anne returned to Sydney with Mrs Reibey. There is some evidence that Anne remained in Launceston and was associated with Catherine, who certainly remained. It is at least possible that they were sisters. It is possible that Catherine also came as a servant to one of the other passengers on the Governor Brisbane. In 1823 Catherine married Peter Fowlser, a convict who had embezzled money from the widow who employed him. There was one child, Frederick Peter Fowlser, before Peter Fowlser died in 1826. Catherine married John Connelly in 1829, by whom she had three more children. From 1829 her life is reasonably well documented. It is her origins that are the puzzle. Her first marriage to the convict, Peter Fowlser, suggests that she enjoyed no elevated social status. She was probably a convict’s daughter. I will be grateful for any suggestions or help. The Clark/es are a difficult group to research. Ian Ian Leader-Elliott, Emeritus Fellow, University of Adelaide, Adjunct Professor, University of South Australia, School of Law
I have received 2 emails on my request that I had sent earlier. However, I am still after info on LETON THOMAS HALLORAN OR O'HALLORAN. I do have his birth date, now just after his marriage and death. I have checked n the Trove and it mentions a Mrs Leton O'Halloran, no other name. Cheers Wendy
Hi Susan, Registration of births in VDL/Tasmania did not begin until December 1838. (In England it was July, 1837.) Before this time we rely on baptism/christening records. In 1991 Alexander Buchanan compiled a list of births/baptisms in Tasmania from 1803 to 1840. He used other resources than church registers including a census in 1827 of children. This gives their place of residence and age, but not their date of birth. The reference was CSO1/122A; some references have changed slightly from when it the holding was known as Archives Office of Tasmania (AOT) to Tasmanian Archives and Heritage Office (TAHO). Maria is listed as being born 1821 and going on the reference with page numbers, possible siblings appear to be Sarah born circa 1815 and Louisa born circa 1824. There are three male Ware children who may or may not be related. I hope this is of help? Maree On 8/02/2015 12:08 PM, Susan Patterson via wrote: > Her family arrived in VDL in 1822 or 3. Hello Listers We are seeking anything at all about James McNamara’s life in Van Diemen’s Land from 1864 - 1891, school? work? crime? Sometimes known as James Morrisson , he is the ‘out of wedlock’ son of Mary Morrison nee Quill and John McNamara Mary Morrison lived for many years in the Morrison family home at 13 Allison Street, West Hobart near the corner with Lansdowne Crescent. His step brother, yrs older, went whaling off NZ and working as a stone mason in Stawell. Victoria Young James was: born Aprll 26 1864 baptised June 26 1864 St Joseph’s Church Hobart Town Thank you to all who kindly helped with the research on Arthur George Turner, his son John is most appreciative. Hi Joy I can't help with military details, but I think it likely that the place your George Turner might have been born is Looe in Cornwall. This might help with locating a birth registration or baptism. The only other place I can think of with an 'oo' ending is Hoo in Kent! If you put Arthur George Turner into the Ancestry search fields with Looe as a place and a birth date of 1900 plus or minus ten years, the first hit is Arthur G Turner of St German's, Cornwall. The latter village is about 18 minutes' drive from Looe. Today's populations#St German's : 1427 and Looe 5280. Unforrunately he was born in 1920! However, if you look on FamilySearch (my preferred initial search and it's free), there's another Arthur George Turner born in St German's 20th March 1907. He has a third Christian name, but only the initial S is given. If this were your Arthur George Turner he would have been only 7 years old at the outbreak of WWI and I doubt if he'd have got away with lying about his age. There's an Arthur George Turner born 1897 in Bromley Kent, but nowhere nearby rhymes with Looe! He would be the best candidate age-wis. The answer to the whole research query depends how accurate your information about his name and place of birth are. LucyAnn

Hi Joy, I read a book years ago, "Soldier Boy", by Anthony Hill, the story of Jim MARTIN who is the youngest ANZAC - he, too, lied about his age, saying he was 18, when in fact he was only 14 years and 9 months when he died in October 1915. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Martin_%28Australian_soldier%29 The youngest British soldier was a boy named Sidney LEWIS, who was only 13 when he joined up - his mother managed to get him sent home again. An odd coincidence, I was watching a show on the ABC yesterday about the Somme, and Sidney was mentioned in the stories. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2499832/Sidney-Lewis-Youngest-WW1-soldier-fought-Somme-aged-13.html I am sure the Australian War Memorian in Canberra would be able to establish where Arthur TURNER came on the list - http://www.awm.gov.au/ Cheers Trish Nowra NSW > A friend has asked me to try to establish was his father the youngest > soldier at Gallipoli. > His name Arthur George Turner > Lied about his age to enlist > Birthplace Loe or Lue in UK > Born around the turn of the 20th C > Lived in Western Australia having migrated with this family prior to WWI > Married a girl family name Nightingale > They lived in South Como, Western Australia from the 1930’s > Had 4 children, John, Gerard, Kevin and Mary > Arthur was a teacher > Joy Morrison
HI Peter, Ken & Harriet, Thankyou all for your great replies, all with some new info. My interest in these families dates from stories told by my Great Uncle George Marshall Gardiner who married Bertha Johanna Bollenhagen . i happen to have inherited a waist length, gathered cotton. petticoat with the name Bertha Bollenhagen written in Indian Ink in the waistband. She has always been a bit of a mystery so decided to find out more about her. The petticoat is now over 100 years old, & to be able to have a background story to add to it, brings it to life, & adds considerable material to my family tree. So again, many thanks for your contributions Marie. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ On 4/02/2015 2:39 PM, Harriet Taylor wrote: > According to the New Zealand Internal Affairs Department B M D website (free > to view) Bertha and August had a daughter, Bertha Johanna born 1864 and > another child N/R (Name not recorded) 1867. Very odd...I can't find a civil registration for the marriage between August and Bertha yet it did take place as it appears in the Brighton Congregational marriage Register (NS28/1/1-2) at TAHO on microfilm. #15 - 30 April 1863, at the house of Charles Duhl, Bagdad, August Bollenhagen, full age, Confectioner to Bertha Duhl, full age, according to the rites of the Congegational Church. Officiating Minister - John B Shepphard. Witness' - F C Chalmers and Ann Chalmers. Both parties signed their names and Bertha spelt her surname as DIEHL. Hi Marie, On Familysearch, there is a marriage between August BOLLENHAGEN and Bertha DUHL at the Congregational Church, Brighton-Tas, on 30 April 1863; also same date, Bagdad-Tas. Death notice for Bertha shows her as the relict of Auguste BOLLENHAGEN (different spelling of his Christian name if you are searching other places). http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article8918369 Cheers Trish Nowra NSW > Bertha Diehl is a daughter of Carl Johann Diehl & his wife Johanna App. > The family arrived on the 'America' July 1855 as Immigrants on the > Bounty Plan. . > It would appear that his daughter Bertha marries [but where? Hello Listers i’m not sure I’m using the right address? Apologies if I’ve breached protocol. A friend has asked me to try to establish was his father the youngest soldier at Gallipoli. I’d like advice on where to start with this. As today Ancestry Australian Records are free I started looking. Alas no Australian WWI records could I see in the Categories.
