    1. [AUS-Tas] Re: The NI William Nichols
    2. Dear Charmian, I do hope you don't mind me replying to your email through AUS-Tas but it was me who Robyn asked for my help. I have over the years did bit and pieces on William Nicholls, but because he was not one of my Norfolk Islanders I never did a profile of him. When I first started to help Robyn I came to the conclusion that there were two William Nichol(l)s one who arrived as a convict to NI on the Royal Admiral and was with Elizabeth Hayward (I have written a book about her daughter who married David Gibson) he left NI for Sydney in 1796 and there he disappeared from the records. (I just found where Garry Wilson had him in his notes, before he died, as dying in Sydney in 1841, I have yet to follow that up.) The 1822 Musters has him arriving in VDL on the Sydney Cove in 1808 without a wife but with 2 children, there again I have not been able to follow him from there. I am not on Ancestry, My Heritage, or Gedmatch but no doubt Robyn will let me know if she has found out anything. Before I left Hobart and came to live with my daughter in Cairns I had to sell a lot of my books and Reg's book "The Youngs of Rokeby and their friends were one of them"!!! I can send you the three page report I did for Robyn that I did when trying to work out the two William Nichol(l)s Regards Irene -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, 21 July 2018 11:19 AM To: [email protected] Subject: [AUS-Tas] Re: The NI William Nichols Hi Robyn, Sorry I have come in late on this discussion. I am a direct descendant of William Nichols & Frances Davis who arrived on the Ocean in 1803/1804 through their daughter Caroline Nichols who married James Belbin (jnr). I have my dna & my Mums (& other family) on gedmatch if you want to check to see if we have a distant match. Although not conclusive, & it seems most agree that there were two William Nichols, it would be interesting to see if there was a match or not. My gedmatch kit is M605458 & my Mum M002584 (we are also on Ancestry, MyHeritage, ftdna & 23&me). Reg Wright did research on the two William Nichols & has a chapter on the Nichols families in his book “The Youngs of Rokeby and their friends”. 3. Hello Charmian I am a direct descendant of Elizabeth Hayward and William Nicholls through their youngest daughter Margaret. She married another ancestor Thomas Giles Hayes in 1813 after the family had left Norfolk Island. Yes there is definitely confusion about William Nicholls. Obviously two of them. I am on Getmatch too but under the name if Robyn Temple. I would like to read that book . Is it available in libraries? 3. Maree, et al, I have been a northern suburbs boy for the last 55 years and remember a nursery in the area of which you speak. I do recall as a younger man going with dad to the nursery and also calling into the wood yard in Glenorchy and getting some wood for the fire. I tried to attach a pdf that you might find useful but it exceeded the limit, so the address is: eprintsDOTutasDOTeduDOTau /18785/1_ClarkMalcolm1977_thesis.pdf I do believe that web addresses do not work that well so where I have inserted DOT in the address replace those with a full stop . Search for the word nursery when you download the thesis. You should find a nursery aside the Humphreys Rivulet which no doubt you are aware runs between Tolosa and Chapel Streets all the way through Glenorchy to the Elwick Bay near the Brooker Highway. Thought there was a plant nursery there somewhere, much later, but I could be wrong. Can't remember exactly when I last remember seeing them. Oh, I just found this article when one market garden was sold in 1949 for a housing estate in 1949. I do just remember it. Doesn't say who owned it: http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article26658831 I have also found trove advertisements for the VINCE family who lived in Tolosa St at a place called Garden Vale and sold chickens. Looks like the Doyle's may have had a small farm. http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article12792695 The same M Doyle is mentioned in this family notice as being at ELWICK. 3. Hi Lyn There is Tas Archives of course - not readily accessible to you, but you could trawl their catalogue to see what turns up: http://search.archives.tas.gov.au/default.aspx?search=1 Re you looking for anything in particular? I have a few west coast books I could check for various things if you let us know. The west coast newspaper Zeehan and Dundas Herald only operated from 1890-1922, unfortunately. I will ponder on this and see if I can find anyone who can remember them, and come back to this post. Regards, Barry R. 3. Maree, Irene and list, I lived in Amiens Ave (street opposite where you used to catch the train at Derwent Park) in my growing years and I do remember one, or perhaps two, market type gardens there. Thought there was a plant nursery there somewhere, much later, but I could be wrong. Can't remember exactly when I last remember seeing them. Oh, I just found this article when one market garden was sold in 1949 for a housing estate in 1949. I do just remember it. I worked there, so first hand knowledge. Cheers Dave Cripps -- David Cripps | [email protected] Hobart, Tasmania
