    3. Clara Salmon is identified as having a Drapers shop in Charles Street, Launceston from 1883 and is identified in the 1892 PO directory as Mrs Jno Salmon, Milliner, 156 Charles Street, Launceston. John Salmon is also identified as Farmer in the 1889 birth of their child. So did Cecil go to one of the schools near Charles Street or was that only his mother's shop location and he actually went to a school near where the farm was? Cheers, Peter

    3. Hi Julia, Possible scenario for where Cecil Hedley Salmon had his schooling. In 1880 there's a letter in the newspapers telling about an accident and the patient being taken to Mr John Salmon's home - https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/8990272?searchTerm=%22j%20salmon%22&searchLimits=l-advstate=Tasmania|||sortby=dateAsc|||l-decade=188 <https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/8990272?searchTerm=%22j%20salmon%22&searchLimits=l-advstate=Tasmania%7C%7C%7Csortby=dateAsc%7C%7C%7Cl-decade=188> The article states they were some 12 miles from Oatlands and the travellers started out from Colebrook. Based on the location of his families abode I suspect Cecil was taught at the Jerusalem (Colebrook) School House. Cecil would have been around 4 in 1880 so probably to young for school. In 1883 there is the resignation of the head teacher Mr Tuelon of Jerusalem School https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/9021217?searchTerm=%22jerusalem%20school%22&searchLimits=l-advstate=Tasmania|||sortby=dateAsc|||l-decade=188 <https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/9021217?searchTerm=%22jerusalem%20school%22&searchLimits=l-advstate=Tasmania%7C%7C%7Csortby=dateAsc%7C%7C%7Cl-decade=188> and Mr G Fenton - https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/9021217?searchTerm=%22jerusalem%20school%22&searchLimits=l-advstate=Tasmania|||sortby=dateAsc|||l-decade=188 <https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/9021217?searchTerm=%22jerusalem%20school%22&searchLimits=l-advstate=Tasmania%7C%7C%7Csortby=dateAsc%7C%7C%7Cl-decade=188> They may have had a hand in Cecil's tutorage. In 1883 a Mr Ockleton is appointed to the school - searchTerm=%22jerusalem%20school%22&searchLimits=l-advstate=Tasmania|||sortby=dateAsc|||l-decade=188 <https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/9021217?searchTerm=%22jerusalem%20school%22&searchLimits=l-advstate=Tasmania%7C%7C%7Csortby=dateAsc%7C%7C%7Cl-decade=188> By 1883 Cecil would have been aged 7 so its more likely he got some of his education under Mr Ockleton. In 1885 Robert Giblin is appointed to the school - https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/9021217?searchTerm=%22jerusalem%20school%22&searchLimits=l-advstate=Tasmania|||sortby=dateAsc|||l-decade=188 <https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/9021217?searchTerm=%22jerusalem%20school%22&searchLimits=l-advstate=Tasmania%7C%7C%7Csortby=dateAsc%7C%7C%7Cl-decade=188> Ockleton having gone elsewhere. Mrs James Gatty came in 1889 - https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/200352358?searchTerm=%22teacher%20Jerusalem%22&searchLimits=l-advstate=Tasmania|||sortby=dateAsc|||l-decade=188 <https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/200352358?searchTerm=%22teacher%20Jerusalem%22&searchLimits=l-advstate=Tasmania%7C%7C%7Csortby=dateAsc%7C%7C%7Cl-decade=188> A new couple came into the school in 1891 but Cecil appears to already be 'sailing the briny'. There don't appear to be any records for attendance or admissions to the school that early in the Archives. Another join the dots but at least you might get some idea of the people who shaped Cecil and gave him the wonderful handwriting... Cheers, Peter > >

There are two references to Waltham Abbey - "Some of the earliest nominees for grants did not stay in the district very long, but of those who came to settle dow were the …….. Mr John Waltham at Waltham Abbey …..” The second reference “ There were several private schools in Kempton, one the the earliest being conducted by Canon Kemise, a retired Church of England clergyman, at “Waltham Abbey”, and who is remembered as a landscape painter of some merit. My Wicks family lived in Green Ponds/Kempton hence my interest in this booklet. Could this be the Mrs Ann Gray you mention, daughter of Rev. Drought ? Waltham Abbey is up to be let in 1852 lately being occupied by the Re. Mr Bryan. - https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/173062775?searchTerm=%22Waltham%22&searchLimits=sortby=dateAsc|||l-state=Tasmania <https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/173062775?searchTerm=%22Waltham%22&searchLimits=sortby=dateAsc%7C%7C%7Cl-state=Tasmania> Waltham Abbey is said to be on 40 acres so this is probably it again in 1856 - https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/3337512?searchTerm=%22Waltham%22&searchLimits=sortby=dateAsc|||l-state=Tasmania <https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/3337512?searchTerm=%22Waltham%22&searchLimits=sortby=dateAsc%7C%7C%7Cl-state=Tasmania> As to the man that Waltham Abbey belonged to. John Waltham was a convict from the '"Calcutta" in 1803 and who arrived with the first settlers to Tasmania in 1804. Seems to have done alright by himself as evidenced by having land grants in 1821. From the LSD index I have a copy of he was asking for another grant in 1828. Mention of him being a farmer in the Green Ponds district. Can't work out any dates when he may have sold on Waltham Abbey but he was still living in the Gren Ponds area up until his death in 1842 - https://stors.tas.gov.au/RGD34-1-2p055j2k His wife Jane passed just a short time later. There are Wills for both of them oonline to view. In 1833 and 1834 there are some advertisements for the auction of a farm occupied by the Reverend Drought - https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/4190017?searchTerm=%22Rev%20Drought%22&searchLimits=sortby=dateAsc|||l-state=Tasmania <https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/4190017?searchTerm=%22Rev%20Drought%22&searchLimits=sortby=dateAsc%7C%7C%7Cl-state=Tasmania> and https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/4190017?searchTerm=%22Rev%20Drought%22&searchLimits=sortby=dateAsc|||l-state=Tasmania <https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/4190017?searchTerm=%22Rev%20Drought%22&searchLimits=sortby=dateAsc%7C%7C%7Cl-state=Tasmania> The number of acres in the 1834 advertisement says 40 acres (30 in earlier) so I wonder if this is Weltham Abbey they are referring to? If it was sold at this date then the buyer were probably John Beaumont and Robert Pitcairn ( although John Beaumont was the Sherriff ?) as shown in the 1841 advertisements. The Reverend Mr Drought died in 1836 sor families o if his daughter Mrs Ann Gray or Giddings lived on there I suspect it may have been under a lease arrangement or rental. Its also interesting to note that in 1852 another Clergyman is also living there, the Rev. Bryan. I wonder if the owners of the property had a long term agreement with the church for their clergy to reside there? Just a possibility? Anyway a few ideas to contemplate? Does anyone know how they came to acquire the house? Did they have it built? Did they own it? I have referred a few listers to Aussie Broadband. Australian owned and staffed by Aussies and a $50 discount of you join through a member (I am member #1086933). Sure I get $50 as well but I can assure you they are a breath of fresh air and you will not have the problems that you are getting now. Good luck. Ring me if you wish to discuss further. 3. Thank you Wynnette for your input re Hedley Salmon. As yet haven't found anything but still hoping. Re the newspaper articles - that is somebody else but thank you for looking anyway. My brother has two small logbooks [which I am transcribing] of his trip to England and back on the barque "Berean" in 1891 when he was 15. Beautiful handwriting - obviously was taught how to write well. There haven't been any stories of him running away to sea. By 1908 he was West Australian manager of the shipping company McIlwraith McEacharn. Thank you again, Julia -----Original Message----- From: Graeme & Wynnette Ford [mailto:graemeford.1@bigpond.com] Sent: Sunday, 17 March 2019 7:03 AM To: aus-tasmania@rootsweb.com Cc: graemeford.1@bigpond.com. Subject: [AUS-Tas] Re: CECIL HEDLEY SALMON born 1876 at Oatlands Julia, I have just had a quick look at Cecil Hedley's birth. His father was a farmer and they lived at Hollow Tree, Jericho at the time of his birth. So, he most likely had whatever education he got at the local schoolhouse if they were still living there in his school years, or the nearest schoolhouse to his home. School houses were dotted in settlements and country areas, within what was then considered a reasonable walking distance for a child to get to. It could be up to five miles. Most children only went to year six, and worked on their parents' farm at all other times. You usually had to be a scholarship child or have well-off parents to go further. Most people still considered it unnecessary for their children to be educated further. My own father, the second youngest child in a family of six children, left school at thirteen in 1929 to work and help support his mother, brothers and sisters. I am sure there will be a person on the list with more exact knowledge of schools in the area. Are there stories of Cecil Hedley "running away to sea"? I found these two articles in Tasmanian newspapers regarding a CECIL SALMON in 1938. A fishing accident in Sydney. I found nothing for a Hedley in the Tasmanian papers. http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article52210020 http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article25466613 Cheers, Wynnette. -----Original Message----- From: Julia Crawley [mailto:jmcc21@bigpond.com] Sent: Saturday, 16 March 2019 6:46 PM To: aus-tasmania@rootsweb.com Subject: [AUS-Tas] CECIL HEDLEY SALMON born 1876 at Oatlands Hi List - This is my first posting and am trying to find some details about the early life of my grandfather Cecil Hedley Salmon [but always known as Hedley] who was born at Oatlands to John and Clara Salmon [nee Nichols] I am after any details re his schooling and where he may have gone to school. In 1891 he was part of the crew to sail from Launceston to London on the Barque "Berean". He was only 15 at the time. Interestingly the ship arrived a day before the 1891 Census in England and he appears on that census. He was the youngest person on board. In later life he became shipping manager of McIlwraith McEacharn in Perth and Melbourne. He died in 1948 in Melbourne. I would be very grateful for any ideas as to my queries.
