I am trying to trace the death place and date of: George Cartledge born Manchester England 6/8/1843. Married Caroline Powell (8/3/1865) at the home of John Perkis, Margaret Street Launceston (R402) Reg. Dr. L.G.Thompson (Rec 116/674) Caroline Powell came from London with her mother & sisters on the 'Whilwind', 31/3/1855. Mother, Mary Powell, 49 y.o. Domestic servant - Suffock. Sisters. Elizabeth 19 y.o. Sarah 15 y.o. Domestic Servant. Caroline 10 y.o. (Archives - RLE CO 7/12/4 Bk:12 . P.10) Their issue - George Horace - Anna (Annie) - James - Emily - Ida - Walter James - Thomas Alfred -Arthur Hubert - Ernest William George - Leslie Russell. It is unlikey that he died in Tasmania, although we have no real indication of where he might have been at the time of death. Last record I have is George Cartledge was master of the 79 ton 83' steam ship Dorset for its trial sea runs between Launceston and Bridport. July 4 1883, despite strong NW winds and heavy seas the preliminary run proved successful. On July 9, however, with a load of tin ore and sundry items, the Dorset was run onto rocks near Bridport. The ship was refloated and was eventually purchased by Holyman's White Star Line. in 1896. Thank you Dennis Cartledge
