SURNAME: LORING First name: John Clements Year of birth: 1828 Place of birth: London Year of death: 1882 Place of death: Hobart Spouse: Caroline Jessie BUTLER John Clements LORING was a Sergeant of Police in Hobart from late 1850s until his death. SURNAME: SULLIVAN First Name: John Joseph Year of Birth: variously 1867 to 1872 (depending on the mood he was in when he signed various maritime certificates) Place of Birth: Hobart Year of Death: 1926 Place of Death: Melbourne, Victoria Spouse: Alice Emily LORING John Joseph is my real stumbling block. He was supposedly put into an orphanage with a brother and two sisters - older than he?? - when his mother died after having (him??) or another babe. Father couldn't / wouldn't look after the children. Was 'fostered' out to a farmer who mistreated him. Eventually ran away to sea (at a young age) where the captain of the (whale boat??) took him under his wing. John Joseph became a Master Mariner, with a Pilotage Exemption in every southern port. Believe SULLIVAN to be the actual family name, but have no proof I suppose. Would love to find anyone descended from the brother(s) or sisters. Have lots on John Joseph's descendants. Cheers, Jan
