    2. Listers, this is a reminder that the Rootsweb mailing lists are not for canvassing paying clients for research. Rootsweb policy is quite emphatic. Only one warning will be issued. Bright Blessings Sandie List Admin

    3. Dear Sandi I completely agree with your policy on not advertising for paying clients on the mailing list, however the $1.10 fee that was asked for, is that charged per page by the Archives for a photocopy of their records. I have been fortunate enough to be able to visit the Archives myself when visiting Hobart, (an absolutely wonderful resource) but for those for whom this is impossible, it must be a wonderful service that Sue has offered to provide. She has not specifically asked to be paid for her services but obviously a donation to cover her costs eg parking, I am sure would be welcomed and would be at the discretion of the sender. I fail to see how this breaches the rules and would not like to see her / other listers punished for her efforts. 3. With respect to the list -master, who does a wonderful and most welcome job, I hope I might be able to contribute another angle to this issue of advertising.... Given that Rootsweb are a VERY commercial concern, their objections might be seen to ensure that other's do not get a share of the market?. Given that people are usually charging minimal fees for any work undertaken ,(and from experience and in business terms these fees wouldn't come within a bulls roar of covering costs, time and etc).....it seems unfair that some gentle advertising is not a feasible consideration. The beauty of the net is that Genealogy is finally being brought out of the dark ages (and out of the financial monopoly of a former assured few) and it has been of enormous value to all. I respect that each list owner has the right to their own policies, and if it is that no advertising is allowed, then that is their right, as they bear the brunt of running their mailing list, including any costs and etc. But if we are imaginitive and foreseeing, then through mailing lists we have the opportunity to bring to all, the wealth of material that is available on convicts. I cannot get to Tasmania, and probably never will. I have little income and as I have spent the last five years researching a history of Port Fairy and given that all the settlers here were from Tas, I need to access records in Tasmania. I haven;t a hope in hades of affording full research fees, and I usually swap services where possible to obtain records I need. If it were not for those who let me know what they have, I couldn;t even get the material I need, as I am not a Proffessor Joe Bloggs with unlimited funding.! So perhaps' list owner's might consider a middle road policy on advertising, the how and why I am not familiar with but I do enjoy Genanz and Australia-l's liberal policies. yours Jenny Fawcett From: "Ann Hamilton" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, June 22, 2002 11:50 AM Subject: Re: [TAS-CONVICTS] Fees > Dear Sandi > I completely agree with your policy on not advertising for paying clients on > the mailing list, however the $1.10 fee that was asked for, is that charged > per page by the Archives for a photocopy of their records.
