If this did occur, how could one find out? Gwenda Thomson
Hi Gwenda As far as I know there were no "marriages" between convicts and the Tasmanian Aboriginal people. There were relationships, however. Have you read books like "The Aboriginal Tasmanians" by Lyndall Ryan (Allen & Unwin; 1996)? For example, references were made to : p179 .. while the sealing women formed sexual relationships with the sealers, military, and convicts. p184 ... He [Robinson] had already encouraged the men to cut their hair, prevented the women from cohabiting with the convicts ... p189 ... and developing relations with the convicts and sealers. I think you will find the Tasmanian Aboriginal geneology fairly well documented. Especially due to the need, under Commonwealth government requirements, for proof of Aboriginality in order to receive benefits. Aboriginal people have a strong sense of family in identifying and most would know their geneology. You should be able to get in touch with one of the Aboriginal Resource Centres in Tasmania to find out more. Whilst the main concentration is on Aboriginal links they would also have records of who they married. The Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Tores Strait Islander Studies (AIATSIS) has a family history section and their on-line searches may also be of benefit. You would need to list the names of the Aboriginal people who were known to be in Tasmania at that time. These names are also well documented. You can reach AIATSIS at the following URL - http://www.aiatsis.gov.au/lbry/fmly_hstry/fmly_hstry_hm.htm Hope that is of some help. If you want to give me some more background to your query I might be able to help further.
