    1. [TAS-CONVICTS] Re: Glatton
    2. Garry A Wilson
    3. Irene, Liz and other listers Just to further clarify Liz's extensive list of 43 persons who came out on the Glatton and found themselves later in VDL, there are in total 49 or 50 people that can be accounted for so as having arrived on the Glatton. Liz actually listed five more of these under Peter McGuire, namely his wife Catherine and children Catherine, Robert, Mary Ann and David Isaac, making her count 48 in reality. However, I have some doubt about David Isaac, only in so far as he is listed in the 1819 muster as having been born in the colony, although one researcher has stated his birth was 1801, which would have meant he had come on the Glatton. This has yet to be followed up as there may well gbe evidence to support his birth in 1801. The other two persons who are known to have come on the Glatton are of course Henry CLAYTON, son of William Clayton (convict) and his wife Sarah who undoubtedly had accompanied his parents on the Glatton having been born around 1799, and Stephen WAIN, convict, who turns up in the 1819 muster (arrival to VDL unknown at this stage). Just to follow on regarding the Tasmanian Convict CDRom - and Irene's comment that she couldn't find any more than two listed from the Glatton, three things should be born in mind ... 1. Although sometimes inconsistent in its presentation of the data, by and large the convict transport ship on which convicts arrived to NSW is only listed in the remarks field on the CDRom, which unfortunately is NOT searchable. This deficiency is relevant for a large number of early arrivals who came to VDL via NSW rather than direct to VDL. 2. Although it is stating the obvious, the convict CDRom only covers convicts, ie persons who served their time as convicts in VDL - ie came as convicts to VDL or were convicted later in VDL itself! (although from memory I think there are several exceptions to this as info on former convicts eg as given in the 1811 muster, has also found its way onto the CDRom even if the person actually did arrive after being emancipated). This means that many persons who had been convicts in NSW (or elsewhere) and who arrived in VDL, particularly after 1811, and after their sentence had expired are generally not included. Nor are they in Tardif as a rule (but even he has a couple of exceptions where he didn't know the date of arrival for example). Thus many ex-convicts who arrived for example via Norfolk Island are not to be found in either the Convict CDRom nor in Tardif. 3. Finally, the Convict CDRom relies primarily on capturing records from AOT's extensive archives. However, where there is no known indent for an intercolonial vessel (eg many of the early intercolonial vessels up to the mid 1810's) and where a person finished their sentence fairly early (and was therefore not in later Conduct Records etc, which systems were only started a bit later - in the case of the "police" books for example 1825 from memory, and even though they were backdated!), those people slip through the net so to speak and are simply not apparent in the AOT records and therefore not found in the Convict CDRom. This applies for example to many of the arrivals per Glatton to NSW who accompanied Bowen to Risdon and stayed in VDL. We know of nine such persons to date (who are mentioned amongst those on Liz's List). For several others, we have deduced the intercolonial vessel from other sources but many others have simply arrived "unaccounted". Four at least arrived into Port Dalrymple on the Buffalo in November 1804, and one probably on the Buffalo in April 1805 to Hobart, whilst Martha Hayes arrived on the Integrity in March 1804 (with husband Henry, who had come out on the Calcutta to join his wife and child). Also on the Integrity was "son-in-law" Bowen who was returning to the Derwent. The Hayes and Bowen had been picked up from King Island after the Pilgrim on which they had left Sydney, damaged its rudder. Elizabeth Murphy came on the Sophia in Feb 1805 and the McGuires arrived on the King George in Oct 1806. Fascinating stuff indeed, tracking the arrivals of convicts via NSW to VDL. In fact extremely facinating, as I think from memory there isn't a single convict transport ship to NSW up to about 1820 that didn't have at least one person who ended up in VDL!! That's not counting the odd vessel from India or the Cape with maybe one or two convicts!. That I think is truly amazing! (The more so when the Convcit CDRom doesn't even allow you to search on that primary bit of info!)
