Hi there Douglas, Jacob Mountgarrett had the pleasure of being present at the foundation of both the Risdon Cove settlement in 1803, as well as that at Port Dalrymple in 1804. Rather a unique position to be in. He came out to NSW aboard the "Glatton" in 1803 as ship's surgeon. Both Jacob Mountgarrett and Ensign Hugh Piper were the first Europeans to explore the area around Longford in 1806. So I'm not at all surprised that there are streets named after him in the area around Launceston. By the way, we will be back down in Tassie at the end of February for 3 weeks. Regards, Liz Penprase
