Hi Shirley, I also have a Tasmanian ancestor who changed his name from MARTIN to GIFFORD. My understanding of name changes was that the person just started using that name and transacting his day to day business and after awhile it became his legal name. I don't know when it became compulsory to legally change your name via Govt. documents. Good luck with your search. Melanie Bowral NSW Looking for MARTIN, GLEESON, WILLIAMS and FARRELL. Dear Listers, My convict was sentenced as Elizabeth Armstrong, but later admitted her correct name was Charlotte Jones. Her name remained Armstrong until her sentence finished and then she started to use her correct name. Therefore, she was married as Armstrong and that's the name on the registration of the first two children. Later children's registration and her death certificate list her as Jones.
