Hello Carol I realise that Jenny has provided you feedback on Ret to PW and I agree with her that it would translate to Returned to Public Works. You mentioned that his wife Frances had been at Cascades Female Factory. If it was before 1829 that she was incarcerated, it would have been Hobart Female Factory, which was next to the old gaol in Macquarie St, that she was imprisoned in, not Cascades (which was not opened until December 1828).
