Hi Trudy, Meryl and List I have followed up suggestions from the list and have now received the info, from Archives, relating to Henry Smart - Index No 70718. It makes absolutely fascinating reading and one can't but feel a pang of sympathy for the life led. I was wondering if it would be possible to know anything about a Mr William Harvey of Bothwell to whom Henry, Police Number 1449 was assigned on Con 27/5. Presumably that is where he was first sent? He was also 2 months probation in a road party at Snake Banks. Does anyone know any thing about Snake Banks please? Is Henry likely to have been in chains- no mention of this. It is a horrible thought! The year is 1837. Regards Rosemary
Hello Rosemary I am glad that you have found some interesting information about your ancestor. There is a little information about Snake Banks road party probation station in Ian Brand's book 'The Convict Probation System' on pp.142-143. This may be available in your local library. It states that the building was designed to house 1 overseer and 20 men and was used between c1836 and 1839. Snake Banks is south of Launceston on the main highway between Launceston and Hobart. If Henry's conduct record did not say he was to do hard labour in chains, then he was probably not in chains - that was an extra punishment for those who 'misbehaved'. Hi Trudy Thank you very much indeed. I shall look into trying to get hold of a copy of Ian Brand's book - perhaps through Inter Library Loan which is a great service. Pleased to hear Henry was probably was not in chains in his road party!
