Hello Frances Many of the BDM indexes for other Australian states (SA, WA, VIC & QLD) are available on CD at local libraries or genealogical societies. Perhaps you cousin could check them at these places for a marriage for Charles PORT or for the birth of children with him listed as father. It may also be worth checking shipping records from Tasmania and into VIC and NSW. He was sentenced to 10 years transportation 9 April 1841. Embarked on the "Barossa" 16 Aug 1841 and arrived 13 Jan 1842. He was granted a CP 4 Dec 1849. >From what I have read in the archives on another Tas list, if he was given a CP he would have to leave VDL, but could not return to England, neither could he go to Victoria. If this is the case, I believe he may well have returned when his 10 years was up. Nothing is shown on his records, as to where he went. The reason I believe he returned, and so does a distant cousin who has been trying to help me, there is a Richard William PORT s/o of Charles PORT b1869 d1899, this is from a grandson. The name of the father of Charles, was Richard William, and at that time it was not quite so common to have two forenames, although I do know there were some who had two and even three. But no further details were known about Charles. Nobody else with the PORT name that was contacted around the Richmond area (?) seems to be interested, so no further info available. My question is, how can I find out what happened to Charles, once he had the CP, and what about a marriage? I have checked the NSW marriages, being that is on-line, but how do I check any others. My cousin hasn't found any on the Tas CD, but from what the possible gt. grandson said, it would appear that there were at least two children, and possibly different mothers. Any help to further my research, would be very much appreciated by both myself, and my cousin on Tas. Many thanks for reading this, and any suggestions that you can make.
