    1. Police records

    3. Dear listers, My great-great-grandfather was a member of the Water Police in the 1840s. He was married at Kirklands in 1846 and gave his occupation as a Constable. The family bible states that one of their children was born at St Helens, Castel River in 1850. When he resigned in 1852, he was a District Constable of Clarence Plains. Is it possible to obtain a copy of his police record? This was such an interesting period in Tasmanian history - bush rangers etc - and I would be interested in finding out more about the various postings he had. With thanks, Marg Watson.

    3. Dr Trudy Cowley List Administrator Hello Marg Yes, you can obtain copies of police records (for certain periods) of where he would have been posted - it will give date of appointment and resignation/dismissal, ship name and wage among a few other things. The references to start with are at the Archives Office of Tasmania (AOT) and are: AC 486/1 Head Office Police - Register of police establishments, 1843-1859 POL 324/1-3 Head Office Police - Register of the appointment, transfer, registration and dismissal of members of the police establishment, 1832-1844 & 1855-1955 Hope this helps.
