    3. Hi listers, I always love a good link and one that I have been using for a while to do Auckland (NZ) research is the Auckland City Library's Heritage Images Online. It is always fascinating to search through, found 3 relatives (one is my great grandfather). I often search just under a basic search to reveal buildings, etc. Of special interest should be under an advanced search entering the term "Schmidt, Hermann John" , will reveal innumerous servicemen some are named others not. He was located in Queen Street Auckland, very central, this is what Auckland City Library's website says about the photographer... Auckland City Libraries holds a collection of around 26,000 half plate and whole plate negatives which were saved from the attic of a building about to be demolished in Queen Street, probably Schmidt's studio. About 4,500 of these form the First World War Soldier Portrait series which has been scanned and made available in Heritage Images Online. The WW1 portraits have been identified when possible by careful checking of Nominal Rolls and Schmidt's own registers. This is a magnificent collection showing brave young men leaving for and returning from the battlefield. The Alexander Turnbull Library in Wellington also holds a collection of 889 of Schmidt's whole plate negatives The amazing thing is that when the old building was being demolished recently, a builder found this enormous collection had been abandoned. Some of the envelopes just had Mr and Mrs so and so, others, a multitude of information. The contacted the library and, because of this act of generosity and intelligence, I dare say; this collection has been transferred digitally for all to see! If you do find a rellie, or two, copy the details and contact them online to let them know, they are thankful for any info you can provide, and will upload the information with the image. So cheers to the builder and to Auckland City Library for their thoughtfullness in preserving the memories of the past for the memories of the future!
