Hi folks looking for any information on William SIDDERS c.1804-1877, "Swing Rioter" from Kent who was transported on the "Eliza" in 1831. He appears to have moved across to Victoria and selected land at Carapook (nr Casterton) in south-west Victoria in 1871. Did he marry in Tasmania? Who was he assigned to in Tasmania? Hi listers, I would like to know how "user friendly" is the Archives Office of Tasmania? I am going to Tassie in March and hope to visit some of the places important to my family in the 1840s. Is it feasible to spend a day at the Archives and find out the movements of my convict g-g-g-mother and the policeman she married and then plan my holiday? Or should I pay a researcher to find this out for me beforehand? That then brings the next question - how do I go about finding a researcher? My only experience with archives is in Victoria, where records can be ordered online with the Public Records Office and they are ready and waiting for you on arrival. I would really appreciate any advice or suggestions you are able to give me. With thanks, Marg Watson, Bendigo. PS. Like many others, my VDL ancestors came to the Bendigo goldfields in the 1850s and I'm still here! If I can help anyone with central Victorian information, just ask.
Hello Margaret The staff at the AOT are very helpful - though it can depend sometimes on just how busy they are on the day. If you turn up there with the facts you know and are able to tell them exactly what you want to find out you will be assisted pleasantly and helpfully. If things prove too difficult on the day, they can supply you with a list of private researchers. Depending on how much 'delving' you wish to do, you will need at least one day and maybe too - then again, it depends of course on how much information is available on your ancestors.
