Pam, The book does not provide information on individual convicts only the ships themselves as in when they arrived in VDL, what route they took and when they left their port of departure. Hi Coralie According to Bateson's book, The Rodney (2) arrived in VDL 20 Dec 1851. I'm rather confused as to where Queenstown actually is as the book says the ship departed from Queenstown. I'm wondering if there is a Queenstown in the UK. The ship left Queenstown on 24 Sep't 1851 and travelled via Gibraltar. The master was Alex Maclean and the surgeon, Harvey Morris. The journey took 87 days. Thanks Anne, I did not have the name of the master & surgeon. Where am I? at the moment living in Whangaparaoa, 30km north of Auckland and moving soon to a "dry" house in Papamoa, Tauranga. I guess the current problems have got across the ditch! Cheers, Peter
Hi Trudy and list, I have found these books very useful for information on my early convict arrivals and their families. I haven't seen Irene Schaffer's book mentioned "Exiled Three times Over" an invaluable book for anyone with convict families sent to VDL from Norfolk Island. Convicts Unbound (by Marjorie Tipping) is another useful resource to the 'First Settlers' of VDL. Hi Peter, Whereabouts in NZ are you - naturally I have a reason for asking. Now to the Malabar (2). The ship arrived on the 21 October 1821. Sailed from Gravesend on 22 June 1821. Journey took 121 days. The master was William Ascough and the surgeon, John Thompson. Hope this helps. There are references to convicts and early conditions in VDL in The Narrative of "George Russell of Golfhill" with Russellania and selected papers. edited by P L Brown. Contains early letters of settlers and otheritems of interest eg. Pass For Drovers dated The Esk March 28 1835. To whom it may concern: Permit the bearer and other two men to pass on to George Town with 69 head of cattle branded on the near shoulder. signed by James Aitkin The men were James Harrison, John Dick and John Frederick. Note below the pass states. "George Town was notorious as the special haunt of bad characters. Cattle stealing was a common practice in Tasmania at this time." Also I mention The Clyde Company Papers for the list. Shirley in East Gippsland -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Anti-Virus.
