    3. Hello All The Hyde Park Barracks Museum in Sydney opened a new exhibition this week entitled Convicts: Sites of punishment. See http://www.hht.net.au/museums/hyde_park_barracks_museum/exhibitionswhats_on# convictsites for further details. Ross Female Factory is one of the sites featured (in fact, it is the only female convict site featured). If any listers are in Sydney or going to Sydney, you may wish to visit the exhibition. I believe it will run for a couple of months at least. 1. The Downs, the Goodwins and Dickens !
    2. Jim Halsey
    3. Hello All, Earlier this month a "thread" was running with the heading "Where was the Downs". After a gap of almost 60 years I am re-reading Charles Dickens' "Dombey & Son", and in chapter 23 I came across the following words uttered by Commander Bunsby, whose opinion had been sought about the missing vessel "Son & Heir". He replied as follows `Do I believe that this here Son and Heir's gone down, my lads? Mayhap! Do I say so? Which? If a skipper stands out by Sen' George's Channel, making for the Downs, what's right ahead of him? The Goodwins. He isn't forced to run upon the Goodwins, but he may. " Don't ask me where "Sen' George's Channel" is/was ! It is plainly not the better known channel between Wales and southern Ireland. No doubt a sea-faring man would know of it amongst the several "channels" seaward of the Thames estuary. Whilst on the subject of Victorian authors I have noticed how often, and unsurprisingly, they refer to contemporary subjects and occupations which occur and re-occur in family history. An interesting and enjoyable way of getting back into the Victorian feel of things! 1. Certificate of Freedom
    2. Anne Hanson
    3. Hi All Am in the process of filing away various bits of paper. Have come across one entitled 'What is a certificate of freedom?' from State Records New South Wales. It says: 'A Certificate of Freedom was a document stating that a convict's sentence had been served and was usually give to convicts with a 7, 10 or 14 year sentence. Convicts with a life sentence could receive a Pardon, but not a Certificate of Freedom. The Certificate of Freedom number was sometimes annotated on the indent or note on a Ticket of Leave Butt. Colonial Certificates of Freedom relate to sentences received for offences committed after arrival in the colony.' Cheers Anne Hanson annehanson@hotkey.net.au
