Hi All, I am not at all sure if there is such a thing as a Tasmanian Inquest index but if there is, could somebody please look up an entry for a convict, DUCROW/DICKROW, DUCROE, John who drowned in a government sloop, The Harmony which was wrecked off Green Island on 7 October, 1836. Many thanks. Anne Hanson annehanson@hotkey.net.au

Hello All I came across the following snippet recently in the "Colonial Times" of 7 January 1831 (p2 c4) and thought you may find it interesting. 'A Correspondent says, "It may not be generally known, that when a master has been deprived of the services of his assigned servant, for improper conduct, by the proper Authorities, he is entitled to receive back the clothing of such servant, with which he is readily furnished, upon application to the Superintendent of the Prisoners' Barracks." Anyone else got interesting snippets to share? Regards Trudy Dr Trudy Cowley List Administrator TAS Convicts Rootsweb List tcowley@bigpond.net.au AUS-TAS-CONVICTS-L@rootsweb.com

Hi Listers I apologise for the cross-postings but this is just the information I wanted and perhaps some others do as well. I have recently bought a book called "Irish Records; sources for family and local history, by James G Ryan, Ph.D." It lists explanations of what can be expected from various types of records, then lists all Irish Cos by name. Under each Co. name it then lists all sorts of sources - Census and Substitutes, by year, Church records by parish, Commercial and Social directories, Family Histories, Gravestone Inscriptions, newspapers, Wills and Administrations, Miscellaneous Sources and, in some cases, Research Sources and Services and web site names, as well as maps of each county. Please note it does not include individual names etc but it does tell you either where to find them, or the appropriate holdings nos. If anyone would like a lookup from this book, please let me know Irene R Rees/Dowsett Family Page http://tribalpages.com/tribes/Brent44

Hi Jenny and others Thanks for this snippet, Jenny. For those not aware, Mrs Bowden and her husband were in charge of the 'Anson' hulk which acted as a probation station for female convicts arriving in VDL between 1844 and 1850. Mrs Bowden's husband died not long after they took on their positions, but Mrs Bowden continued in the role. Some people, like Louisa Meredith, highly praised Mrs Bowden's work, others (mainly men in Government) were more critical. I noticed yesterday that her husband's headstone survived removal from Queenborough Cemetery to Cornelian Bay Cemetery. Hi Natalie, Unfortunately (in my experience,) most of the marriage certificates from this period give scant information. They don't usually list the names of the parents and sometimes not even the ages of the couple. When their actual age is not provided the entry usually states either 'full age' or 'minor'. If you want to find the name of the vessel the convict arrived on you can check the 'Convict Permission to Marry' index on the Archives Office of Tas website. (I have checked this out and Patrick travelled on the 'Samuel Boddington'). You can also obtain the convict's records, which will provide the name of the vessel, the date of the trial and where the trial was held. It will also usually provide the name of the 'native place' and sometimes even gives the names of family and where they were residing at the time. There will also be (usually) various other information such as a description of the person and to whom they were assigned. I have found that the amount of detail provided is variable with my convict ancestors and of course you can't rely on it being 100% accurate, but it's better than nothing! Marriage certificates applied for through the Regristrar of BDMs are around $32, but if you have access to microfiche copies of the early Tas BDMs then you can usually obtain a print out of the certificate for as little as 20 cents, depending on the organisation. The copies are not as attractive as the ones from BDMs, but for the price........ Other listers may have some further ideas on how you can obtain the info you want. cheers Diane in Sydney -----Original Message----- From: AUS-TAS-CONVICTS-L-request@rootsweb.com [mailto:AUS-TAS-CONVICTS-L-request@rootsweb.com]On Behalf Of natalie moore Sent: Thursday, June 09, 2005 8:30 AM To: AUS-TAS-CONVICTS-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [TAS-CON] Convict marriage Certificate Hi LIst Could someone please give me an answer re the following: What information am I likely to find on the marriage certificate for: Patrick HOGAN (convict) married Anne LARKIN (free girl formerley BRENNAN) married St Johns, Hobart, Tas., on 8 Apr. 1854. 1854/507.
