Hello Carol I realise that Jenny has provided you feedback on Ret to PW and I agree with her that it would translate to Returned to Public Works. You mentioned that his wife Frances had been at Cascades Female Factory. If it was before 1829 that she was incarcerated, it would have been Hobart Female Factory, which was next to the old gaol in Macquarie St, that she was imprisoned in, not Cascades (which was not opened until December 1828). Hi All, My Harry Sherwood arrived the Hibernia 1819 at Hobart does any one know where after disembarking he would have gone too. I know he was sent to a Mr Fryett but his record states that he after committing a crime while in Mr Fryetts services he was returned to Prison Works where was the Prison Regards Carol
Hi Jenny, Many thanks for your help would you happen to know where the Prison Works would have been? Regards Carol
Ret to PW would (to my limited knowledge) be RETURNED TO PRISON WORKS. If he was thus returned, then he was originally sent to Fryett from the Prison Works. Fryett was his employer at the time he was charged with offence of living in Adultery. Hi Carrol, Harry was probably assigned to work for Mr Fryett at the time of his misdemeanour. Details from other convict records gave Mr Fryett's address as Hobart. Hello list I have somewhere (but can't put my hands on it right now) a rough map of Cascades FF from the early 1830s which shows a burial ground marked near where Yard 5 was eventually built. However, I have not yet determined if this space was actually used as a burial ground or not, and if so, till when it was used and for whom. Hello All (apologies for cross-posting) I have just uploaded two lists of infants of convict women who died at nurseries for convicts' children, taken from the Registrar General's death records. One list is for the 1148 known infants who died in nurseries in Hobart - ie, Cascades Female Factory, Dynnyrne Nursery and Brickfields Nursery. The other list is for the 64 known infants who died at Ross Female Factory Nursery. You can access the lists (provided as pdf files) from the Female Factory Research Group website at http://www.femalefactory.com.au/FFRG/nurseries.htm#Deaths. The lists provide name of the infant (in alphabetical order by family name), age at death, cause of death, date of death, and for the Hobart list, nursery. I hope that some of you find these lists useful. The lists have been compiled by Anne Ferran, with my assistance, for an art project she is currently working on. I am particularly interested in this comment because I have been given information about Ellen Bubb La*rence who was supposedly buried somewhere in Hobart,Tasmania in 1836. There is mention that she has a headstone which contains a bit more information than just her birth and death dates. I have been sent a copy of a letter written to her by her father who mailed it to her from London in 1835. I am hoping that any further information on the headstone will reveal other family information that may be lost currently like parent's names, where she was born, etc. Since I live in Kentucky, USA it's a bit hard to just run down there and take a look myself but if some kind one has a copy of the photograph of her headstone that they would be willing to share with me or give me a transcription of what the headstone says...or tell me where I could obtain the information in question, I'd be ever so thankful.
