    3. Hello Irene As your convict arrived under the probation system, there should be some detailed information on his conduct record as to where he was stationed whilst serving his probation and afterwards when available for hire as a probation pass holder. Some of this information may be in 'code' but Susan Hood's book 'Transcribing Tasmanian Convict Records' can assist with this, as can http://www.rootsweb.com/~austashs/convicts/conabbrev.html complied by Maree Ring. Alternatively, both Port Arthur Historic Site (see http://www.portarthur.org.au/pashow.php?ACTION=Public&menu_code=600.100.100) and the Female Factory Research Group (see http://www.femalefactory.com.au/FFRG/service.htm) offer transcriptions services of convict records. To gain an understanding of the Probation System, Ian Brand's book 'The Convict Probation System' is authoritative. It describes each of the probation stations where male prisoners could be stationed for their 6 months' probation upon arrival in VDL. 3. Hello Carol There are some images and some architectural drawings. A good resource, though, to get a good idea of the layout and function of the site is Lucy Frost's book 'Footsteps and Voices' which is available from the Female Factory (see http://www.femalefactory.com.au/shop.htm). There are also some images of the factory on the Female Factory Historic Site website - for example, see http://www.femalefactory.com.au/index.htm, http://www.femalefactory.com.au/gaol.htm and http://www.femalefactory.com.au/timeline.htm (these images are taken from 'Footsteps and Voices'. Also, if you go to the AOT site at http://resources.archives.tas.gov.au/archphotos/Searchmenu.asp? and type 'female factory' in the Description field you will get some images of Cascades. 2. Peter Thomas
    3. I can't say one way or t'other whether the situation mentioned was "common". But I can quote an example where similar compassion was sought and refused. William COMSTIVE: Sept 1820 at York, sentenced to death, commuted to transportation for life 1821 arr VDL per "Lady Ridley" 1822 married Hobart; two sons produced 1834 at Hobart, sentenced to death, commuted to transportation for life 1834 to Sydney per "Arab", then to Norfolk Island 1842 granted conditional pardon re 2nd life sentence; removed from NI to Sydney; granted ToL 1843 Mrs COMSTIVE dies in Launceston 1845 COMSTIVE suffers a stroke; unable to support himself; applies to be transferred to VDL, in order to be reunited with his sons: A magistrate at Launceston inquired into the application, and spoke to both sons: they were impecunious (love that word), and intended to leave the colony; permission refused, as he would not be supported by his family, and must therefore be "chargeable' to the VDL government. COMSTIVE continued serving his 1820 sentence in NSW until he died at Parramatta Benevolent Asylum in 1858. The children were raised by maternal cousins. The time was around 1845 to 1855. I have searched almost everywhere except for the convict side of things. Could anyone , someone do some look ups for me around this time, or maybe some kind soul has seen their names whilst looking for their convicts?? Any help would be gratefully appreciated. They cant have completely disappeared could they?? Regards Jenni

    3. And Trudy, the other odd things were...... 1.Michael Carr wrote in his petition, that his wife was sentenced to LIFE. But the NSW records show her as a 7 year transportee. 2. The Principal Superintendent of Convicts N.S.W (Hely) said that Catherine was being held in the Female Factory. But two inquiries found that she was not there. So where was she? And why was her sentence reduced, if indeed so, and how did she get to choof off to Tasmania to join her husband, who had Wm Moriarty, and James Scott (colonial Surgeon) both backing him, and the captain of a vessel who was prepared to bring his wife down from Sydney. And Colonel Arthur didn;t even blink over this request. It was granted with the least amount of enquiries held. Indicators are suggesting that influence was brought to bear in this case. I am wondering now if there is a seperate set of registers held for convicts brought down from N.S.W. 3. Trudy.....Catherine Carr cannot be found as a convict in Tasmania either.!!!! In fact, her and her husband trotted off to Victoria in 1836, he died there in 1840 , and, her brother, Michael Bulger/Boulger also joined them, and he is buried with Catherine's husband. When Catherine's husband died one paper wrote " "Death of Carr. One of the earliest settlers at Melbourne, lately a publican, died on Saturday after a lingering illness of several months. He was in Ireland, a supporter and harbinger of some desperate company, who under the mistaken idea of retrieving their country's glory, committed many violent acts and offences to the laws of the country. He was seized as an accomplice, but steadfastly refused to betray or inculpate his comrades, he was accordingly banished for a term of years to New South Wales, where through the interests of many noble and influential friends he obtained a pardon. To this day Carr's name is almost worshipped among the lowest classes of Ireland." 3. Hello all I have located the map of Cascades with a burial ground marked which I referred to yesterday (ref AOT, LSD 1/47 p.296). Attached is a letter from Bishop Willson dated 2 January 1844 which states: I beg leave to recommend for your consideration, a piece of land situated near the Cascade Factory [that marked on the map] to be endorsed for a Burial Ground in order that the Children may be interred there, instead of Trinity Parish Burial Ground. There is plenty of land belonging the Govt near the factory, which would be suitable. The Comptroller General aggress to survey 2 acres of the land for a burial ground. It is still not certain, however, that this went ahead. Thus, it appears that the infants who died at the nurseries were buried at Trinity Parish Burial Ground (where Campbell St Primary School is now situated) at least prior to 1844 (and possibly afterwards).
