    1. request - Launceston cemeteries - Louisa COMSTIVE, 1843
    2. Peter Thomas
    3. Louisa COMSTIVE died in Launceston on 13 October 1843: register No.1008 refers. Her husband was by then retransported to Norfolk Island (1834), and again to NSW (1842). Louisa had two sons, Thomas and Daniel, who would have both been teenagers when she died. She was in a lot of trouble for drunkeness 1840-41. And was imprisoned for 12 months in 1842. She appears to have died just a few weeks after completing her sentence. I expect she was a pauper, and that she was buried wherever paupers were buried in Launceston in 1842. When she married in 1822, she was CofE, if that may be relevant. My requests of any persons who might be looking at any archives in Launceston: 1. is it recorded which cemetery Louisa would have been buried in ? 2. would the records then show a precise location of a grave - row & plot numbers, perhaps ? 3. is it possible to discover if anyone is buried with her ? And if anyone is looking at Launceston newspapers for October 1843, I'd be grateful if you kept an eye out for any mentions of the COMSTIVE family. 2. Hi all. I recently found my convict David Craven in the new Departures Index. He had just dropped out of sight after getting his Ticket of Leave. I could find no trace of him until now. It says he left Launceston and was bound for Melbourne. I'm not familiar with genealogy for that area. Can anyone help with where I should look next. Is Melbourne on the way to the gold fields? Thanks all. David Craven Bristol, Pa. USA

    3. Hello all, I know this topic has been dealt with in the past, but I didn't need the information at the time. The convict transport "Blenheim" arrived at Hobart on 31 October, 1851 after departing Cork on 29 July, 1851. The Tasmanian Convict Index records this vessel as the "Blenheim" (4). However, on the Convicts to Australia website the vessel for this particular voyage is entitled "Blenheim II" (3). Could SKS please enlighten me? Cheers, Marg Wise.

    1. RE: Prisoner Barracks
    2. Peter Thomas
    3. If I understand correctly what I was told when I visited Hobart last, the Prisoner Barracks = the town jail, and was later known as Hobart Prison, until it ceased operation circa early 1960s. This building stood in Campbell Street, up the hill from the docks, the Theatre Royal (first performance 1834), and the Royal Hobart Hospital. Further along, after the prison, is the Campbell Street Primary School, which was formerly the Trinity Burial Ground. Most of the prison has been demolished, but the the Chapel, the Old Supreme Court, the Judges Chambers, and the Gallows remain. They are now occupied by the National Trust of Tasmania, and there are regular tours. I went on such a tour, and found it well worth the time and the modest fee. The rest of the site, now demolished, is now occupied by an educational institution. The chapel (Penitentiary Chapel, I think I heard it referred to as) is surmounted by a tower, with a large clock, which has an interesting story of its own. As I recall, the chapel was completed about 1831. I don't recall the details of when other parts of the complex were built. 2. Trudy Cowley
    3. Hello Jenni Someone may already have replied to you off-list, but just in case they have not ... There were two convicts named John FISHER in your time frame - one transported on the 'Equestrian' (3) in 1852 and one transported on the 'William Jardine' (2) in 1850. There was no-one by the name of Hannah FISHER transported.
