OK, Now it's taking forever, I feel like an idiot, it worked just fine, albeit slower than usual, this evening, but now it's slower than a wet week! Sorry if I have led any of you on a bum-steer, I apologise. Cheers, polly

Greetings All, There is an article in the "Examiner News" to-day, page 21 ""CONVICT RECORDS RECOGNISED The United Nations has recognised Tasmanian Convict records as a significant and irreplaceable part of Australia's History. Tasmanian Education Minister, Paula Wriedt said that the records, held in the Archives Office of Tasmania, had been included on the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation Australian Memory of the World Register 2006. "The register is part of a UNESCO International Programme established to recognise, protect and promote documentary material that records or reflects significant milestones and events in the history of the world" Ms Wriedt said. "It is the equivalent to UNESCO's world heritage list for the natural environment" Ms Wriedt said that the records of the Tasmanian convict system documented the lives of more than 75,000 people transported to Tasmania from the UK and other parts of the British Empire between 1803 and 1853. "These fascinating records are a vital link to our past and it's fantastic that their significance has been recognised"she said. Other records to be included on the Australian Memory of the World Register this year include the Ned Kelly papers held by Victoria's Public Record Office and Convict records held by the State Records NSW."" Three Cheers for our Irreplaceable Ancestors, Ellen

Dear Peter and lists, Thank you for that Peter I will be interested in Barbara's next book on the "Queen" 1792, my James Jordan was on it. Over the past couple of years there has been a number of books written about the convicts and the ships they arrived on, most giving indept details of those on board. I wonder if is possible to make up a list of these books. Two recent ones come to mind and I know there are many more. Can anyone add to the list I have started below. The Last Ladies - "Duchess of Northumberland" 1853. by Christine Woods A Drift of Derwent Ducks - "Australasia" 1849. by Trudy Cowley And there have also been books written about immigrant ships and their passengers. There could be a list of these as well. German Immigrants - "America" 1855 by Pat Harris I am sure we could come up with an interesting list. I will copy the list of books and email it at a later date. I will go and search my bookcase as I am sure I have more, Irene Schaffer Email: schafferi@optusnet.com.au Website: http://members.optusnet.com.au/~schafferi (including Norfolk Island and Van Diemens Land list) ----- Original Message ----- From: "Peter Mayberry" <ppmay@pcug.org.au> To: <GENANZ-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, February 18, 2006 10:50 PM Subject: Death or Liberty - Irish convicts of the Britannia 1797 > Hello All, > > DEATH OR LIBERTY > > Death would have been a better option than life on board the 1797 > convict ship Britannia. > > Its 200 or so convicts had faced a sadistic captain, starvation rations > and savage punishments during their long journey from Ireland. Hello all The Female Family Founders Database has been updated - see http://www.femalefactory.com.au/FFRG/fffdb.htm#Records. There are now 1,817 female convicts in the database for whom we have descendants or researchers linked, and another 544 female convicts for whom we have information, but no descendants. Even if your female convict ancestor appears on these lists, but you have not submitted her, please consider doing so. Also, we can provide you with the contact details of those people who have submitted her details. Of course, if your female convict ancestor does not appear on these lists, we would love for you to submit her details. G'day, I'm researching a group of political prisoners who arrived VDL per "Lady Ridley" in 1821. One of these is Charles STANFIELD, sometimes mis-spelled STANSFIELD. What I know is that Charles was born c1792 at Barnsley WRY. I have found a Charles STANFIELD died at Clarence, Tas, on 17 June 1875, age 84 (close); occupation "Boatman". The informant was Mary HARRINGTON, daughter of Kangaroo Point. No details of birthplace, etc. RGD ref No.134. I'm not yet sure that this Charles, and Charles from the "Lady Ridley", are the same gent. Having got that far, the GSNT library closed, and will remain so 'til next Tuesday. I didn't notice Charles marrying, or fathering children, but the possibility remains (if these are the one man) that Mary was born in England, and followed her father into exile. Several political prisoners were followed by wives & children. I'm wondering if anyone else is researching the STANFIELD or HARRINGTON lines ? Peter THOMAS Darwin, AUSTRALIA <pmthomas@bigpond.com>
Dear Lists, Three weeks ago I discovered this forum and was so impressed that after placing a number of items on it offered to become the Tasmanian Moderator. This medium is very user friendly and offers many ways of getting your story out or searching for that elusive family member. I think in the future we will see more of this type of contact on our computers. The High Country of Victoria seems a long way from Tasmania but I have been surprised how many Tasmanian names are on this site. I think we forget how much our ancestors travelled in those early times. Thomas, the son of the convict James Jordan (born Norfolk Island) went to Beechworth where some of his family lived for many years. Thomas died there in 1888. Thats a lot of travelling Norfolk Island, to Longford Tasmania and then Beechworth Victoria. Moderators are needed for the other states and this could be a great way of getting in touch and finding out more about your family and state. I have added the Lady Juliana convict women's story to the Tasmanian section, it will be interesting to see what response I receive. The forum site can be found on http://www.highcountryheritage.org/phpBB2 Hope to see you there.
