Thanks Peter.
Welcome: he's a bit late for the convict era in Tasmania. There is a CD called "Tasmanian Convict Records" which lists all Tas convicts, with some basic details. It is the most convenient starting point. You'll find it in most Genealogicial libraries. It is the most convenient starting point. My partners GGrandfather Eugene CUNNINGHAM went to Tasmania in approximately 1858 I believe from Ireland. I have his death certificate. It states that he was born in Letter County Kerry Ireland. He married in NSW in 1863 and then in 1882. According to his death certificate he was in Tasmania for 3 years and then he moved to NSW and had been in NSW for 44 years at the time of his death. I don't know if he was a convict or not, and i have no idea where to start my search, could someone give me an idea on where to look. I live in Sydney, but does anyone know if the Mitchell Library in Sydney would have copies of whatever records i might find Eugene in? TIA Barb
Hi Barbara No he wasn't a convict as transportation finished in 1853 in Tasmania but continued in WA until the 1860s. It will be a long hall going through the passanger lists for you. :-) Some have been transcribed, check your local library/society to see what they have, mitchell library may have the lot, don't know. Do a web search. Join your local gen society they willl be able to give you a push in the right direction. Pam Thanks for your interest. Though most of the information I have comes from previous research by relatives, I am fairly certain that my Convict arrived alone on the Georgiana 2. Different ships as you can see. Also five years after arriving here he married, I strongly suspect she did not come to Australia. Unfortunately there is nothing in the IGI to identify his wife. More research to be done. Never the less will be covering all angles and checking shipping records as you suggest. David Thanks for the information. The mane you gave me is as close as I've been able to come. However, unfortunately I don't think this town could be the one I'm looking for.
