Hello Peoples Is anyone researching those convicted at the Warwick Spring Assizes 1802, most of these convicts arrived aboard the Experiment, Calcutta, Glatton, Fortune and Coramandle. Also those convicted at Dublin City 1815, most of these arrived aboard the Alexander, Pilot, Canada and the Surrey. Bright Blessings Sandie
Chris, (& others) - have a look at the Web Site, as per URL in my Signature below, and click the Family History Section which will then provide you with access to The Mahady/Mahedy & Quigley Families of Tasmania for detailed info, which may relate to the Patrick Quigley as mentioned in the message below. My Mahady Family is connected to the Quigleys through a Hugh Quigley, whose wife was Ann Mahady, being transported in 1842, with her brother James Mahady, after Hugh and John were convicted at County Longford. Details of the the full Trial, plus sentencing and transportation etc., are also recorded in the Mahady Web Site, under the Family History Section. Both of these Families finally settled in the Westbury area of Tasmania and Mary Mahady, daughter of James, married a William Pledge in 1860 Should anyone reading this message find any form of connection with the aforenamed persons, especially of the Mahady Clan, then I would really appreciate an individual response as, apart from the Mahady Web Site, I do have lots of more information plus a Worldwide Mahady NetGroup. BTW, a complete story of a Matthew Mahide being tried, convicted and hanged, in Van Diemens Land, during 1848, has also been recorded under the Family History Section - Convict Transport Sub-Section of my Site. Would also appreciate any further information, from any Listers reading this message, regarding any of the above, especially about my namesake Matthew Mahide, as I had no knowledge of his existence prior to a lucky find whilst seeking something entirely different, and wonder whether his burial was recorded, and where, as I would like to visit his grave when I carry out an intended visit to Westbury,Tasmania, some time soon now. One of my antecedents one Thomas Chatfield was transported to Tasmania in 1931 on the "William Glen Anderson" arriving |November of that year to serve a 14 years sentence. Apart from a physical report I have completely lost track of him from that point. Do you have any reference to a Thomas Chatfield in your records as I woul dlike to trace details of his life following transportation. I would be most grateful for any information you may have. Thank you for this Tony, not everyone's ancestors make the newspaper (twice) - not sure if this is a good thing though. This has given me another name and area to try. At least I now know we are on the right track with Herts. Just out of interest, if you are ever looking at the Hertfordshire Genealogy site, there is an answer to a question posted about another Hertford. convict named Rueben Blazeley. James Knapsey's son married Rueben's daughter, and their eldest daughter was my great grandmother. Thanks again, I'll let you know how the puzzle turns out. Welcome to the AUS-TAS-CONVICTS mailing list! You are currently subscribed in "mail mode", which means that you will receive every posting made to AUS-TAS-CONVICTS as a separate e-mail. The directions on how to change to digest mode are given below. 1. How to unsubscribe. Send a message to [email protected] that contains (in the body of the message) the command unsubscribe and no additional text. 2. How to subscribe. Whatever you just did worked, or you'd not be getting this message. But for future reference (for instance, if your subscription is cancelled for whatever reason and you want to resubscribe), just send the command "subscribe" to [email protected] 3. How to change to digest mode (several postings are combined and sent to you together as a single large message). There are two steps. First, send the command "unsubscribe" to [email protected] to discontinue mail mode. Second, send the command "subscribe" to [email protected] to start receiving digests. 4. How to change to NOMAIL mode. There is no formal NOMAIL mode. All you have to do is follow the directions above and unsubscribe when you want the messages to stop, and then when you want them to start again, simply subscribe again. 5. If you'd like to post a message so everyone on the mailing list receives it, just send it to [email protected] It will then be sent on to everyone in both mail and digest mode. You don't need to send it explicitly to both. 6. To contact the administrator of this mailing list, send mail to [email protected] For your verification, a transcript of the original subscription request is included below.
Listers, When your subscription was entered by you at the mailing list you were sent a list of guidelines: Included were how to unsubscribe etc., at the commencement of a digest there is directions on how to unsubscribe also. I trust that these were kept in a safe place ;) Following this I will send a copy to the list of them ... Bright Blessings Sandie

Hi everyone and thank you to Wendy, Pam and Patti for the information. To Sue - an especial thank you, and I would be extremely grateful if you would add John to your list of lookups on your next visit to the State Archives. It is extremely kind of you. To Patti - I'll see what I can find out for you about James Knapp/Knapsey. I should be able to get word to you within the week. Regards to all Tony
Hi Tony There is a wonderful woman named Sue Wyatt who lives in Tassie and who goes to the Archives fairly regularly. She is willing to do look ups and make copies and email or post results to you. She only charges for copying and post within Aust. Her email address is [email protected] . His convict record will have a list of other offences and sentences, which should tell you more about his absconding and further sentences. It also has a physical description of the convict including identifying marks (very interesting reading). Yes, the '2' after the ship means second voyage. One on my convict ancestors was also tried at Stamford. His name was James Knapsey and he was tried on December 31st 1842 for stealing two silver watches, aged 21 years. He was sentenced to 7 years and transported to Tasmania in 1844. The problem is I can't find any records of this man before his trial. I suspect he was really James Knapp (c.1822 in Bengeo, Hertford). I have a favour to ask: - would you be able to see if you can find any records of this man (either Knapsey or Knapp) in Stamford - court records, census, any references would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Patti Vallance [email protected] -----Original Message----- From: Tony Flynn [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Friday, 26 April 2002 6:22 AM To: [email protected] Subject: [TAS-CONVICTS] John Plowright Hi This is my first mailing here, so apologies if I've got it wrong. My great great grandmother's brother John Plowright was transported to Tasmania for what appears to have been considered a run of the mill crime, that of stealing Silk Handkerchiefs. He arrived in Tasmania in 1836 on board the Elphinstone 2 (or does that mean the second voyage of the Elphinstone?). Curiously although sentenced to 7 years transportation I understand there is an entry in the Hobart Gazette of Jul 1847 concerning his absconding. I assume that the local courts or prison authorities could, and did, extend prisoners sentences - I'd be keen to learn more. Would any of the listers know who I could approach to obtain a transcription of the article in the Hobart Gazette? I live in England, actually about 15 minutes walk from where the crime was committed :-) in Stamford in Lincolnshire. John was a native of Easton on the Hill, Northamptonshire. I have seen further a 'convict permission to marry' between John Plowright (FREE) and a Catherine Hedley (Cadet 2) in 1850. Should anyone know any details I would be greatly obliged. Hello, I am trying to find information on James ROWLEY who was a convict who arrived on the "ARAB" in about 1821. I am trying to see if there is a connection to my gggg grandmother Sarah ROWLEY. Sarah was supposedly born in Tasmania about 1818 but I have been unable to find any record of her birth or mention of parents or siblings. I thought that if she was only 2 or 3 when she arrived, she may not remember and thought that she was born in Tasmania. She married John CRAUN in 1841 after the first three of their children were born. They had another five after their marriage. I would appreciate any help or information. Regards Wendy in Queensland
Hi Tony If no-one comes forward to help I suggest you email the Tasmanian Archives Office as they will have a huge amount of information on your convict which you will be able to get photocopies sent. The cost is about $23 Aus dollars for an hour's research. I think he probably committed other crimes hence his increase in sentence. The 2 after the ship names means a second voyage. check out the following site to give alittle more info on the ship, you will need to move the arrow on the bottom to get the captain and surgeon's names. http://www.convictcentral.com Go into convict shipping then Tasmania Search on "Tasmanian Archives" should give you that site, worth a check through the info and catalogues. I could get the bit out of the paper as we have film in the National Library but only Tas has the convict records. They give you a full body description, wife, children, parents, previous crimes, where they served on gangs, any trouble they got into, punishments, native place, a wonderful resource. Have you checked to see if his wife was also a convict? Ask the archives office to check.
