There appear to be a number of people who have a tendency to use an address diverter for their emails. Such a practice, whilst it may seem easier, places an unnecessary burden on the list. By this I mean, quite often people fail to access their second or first account which causes mail to continually bounce. Sometimes this happens when people try to spam the addresses on the list, this does not work as rootsweb servers detect the diagnostics of the mail and bounce it. Invariably what the above tends to achieve is that in the end I must unsubscribe the WHOLE list and each of you must subscribe again under your preferred email address. As some of you may be aware, I have already had to do this once, it may be necessary to do it again. So .... if you receive an email saying you have unsubscribed and you know you haven't then the above is why. Just subscribe again. Bright Blessings Sandie List Administrator
Listers There been several "posts" to mailing lists from subscribers and non-subscribers regarding installation of a product called "Spam Bar". It would seem the product sends out notifications automatically to everyone in the user's address book, including mailing lists. This product is designed for the purpose of blocking spam mail - but - is ironically using regular spamming tactics in it's attempt to advertise itself (how it mails itself to addresses). I will be unsubscribing anyone who sends a message to the list regarding the application "Spam Bar" ... they are no longer in control of their own e-mail facility. This message from me IS NOT asking for opinion or comment on Spam Bar or other product like it - the message is SPECIFICALLY to advise of what action will be taken on my part if such a message appears on the list. To all Sorry, in my haste forgot to include the address. I often see requests for the locality of Australian Place names. I am trying to trace what happened to a Warren James, he was convicted and sentenced to death in 1831 for his part in the Dean Forest Riots in Gloucestershire, Uk. He was transported to Tasmania on board the Elizabeth which left London on 18 Oct 1831 and arrived in Tasmania on 15 Feb 1832. His convict number was 39589. I would appreciated any help on this matter. Many thanks. Nicky
I received this reply in response to my query about the Warwick Assizes relevant to my Tasmanian convict. Bright Blessings Sandie List Administrator Warwickshire County Record Office Priory ParkCape Road WARWICKCV34 4JS Website: <www.warwickshire.gov.uk.countyrecordoffice (subscript: my ref 01052002/RAG/T) Dear Ms Playle, Thank you for your email of 30 April 2002 asking for information contained in the Spring Assizes for Warwick 1802. Unfortunately the records of trials on the Midland Circuit were destroyed by a clerk in the 19th century and do not exist earlier than 1860. The Assizes were reported in local newspapers. As the Warwick Advertiser didnot start until 1806 the best newspaper is Aris's Birmingham Gazette. Although it reports only a few selected cases at each Assize it is worth trying. A set is available at the Birmingham Reference Library,Chamberlain Square, Birmingham B3 3HQ.I wish you well with your research. Yours sincerely Rosalind Green (Mrs) Principal Archives Assistant
I would like to find any info on the above please. I found this address on a Valuation roll for the district of Richmond 1862. My GGGrandfather was granted a parcel of land there. Regards Anne
G'day, SP = sessions of the peace; courts presided over by Justices of the Peace; sometimes called Petty Sessions; Police Court; Court of Summary Jurisdiction; Local Court; or Magistrates' Court. I think the big "P" means that he was pardonned. I have a couple of questions which I hope can be answered: 1. In the left hand margin near the top is a large "P". I'm wondering why it is there. Looking at the beginning of the next person's record I see that there is also the same letter in the same place. 2. Regarding details of the trial back in England, I know that Q.S. stands for Quarter Session. My ancestor's record has S.P. I've been told that this stands for Peace Session. I have found that if you use the search engine Google you can just about get anything you want. Clicked on the advance search and put in convict system Van Diemens Land and got lots of convict sites. G'day, "WF" would be the initials of the magistrate imposing the reprimand. denial is just a record of his prior trouble with the law. Every convict was questioned on arrival, by Mister Muster Master (as the early newspapers delighted in calling him). The records which arrived from England varied in content. Newspapers often add some detail to the official record of court appearances. Georges trade is listed as House Lad and Tailor can anyone explain what a House Lad would have done? To all Listers, Thank you for your support BUT we do have a list Administator who does an enormous amount of work for the benefit of all of us and I suspect does not receive an enormous salary for doing it. Having made my statement I am quite prepared to abide by her ruling on not Showing $$$ amounts and ask that all of us return to our main purpose " help each other to find information and trace our convict Ancestors" Good Luck Ken Ken Smith Phone[Australia] (03) 9870 3534 Email:- [email protected] 13 Tagell Rd. Sandie I fully agree with Roger's comments, one is not talking about a professional researcher, but a major government body. We have had a lot of debate here in NZ over the huge increases in fees for services - do I assume correctly that you would ban such discussion if it occurred in Tasmania because dollar amounts are mentioned. Is it not reasonable that your proposed change be put on the list and any feedback be considered before imposing it. I assume it applies to anything - the cost of CDs anywhere in the world, membership fees of genealogical societies to name just two. For the record those of us who do not live in your country appreciate such information to help us how to preceed "from a distance". I have to agree - how ever I have a slightly different view on it. I do not consider the Archives Office as commercial research. It is not as if you can get the information from anywhere else - they are the only place to get copies of the convict records. They are not researching for you - they are merely being a copy facility (which other members of the list offer to do for you also - does that make all of those people commercial researchers ?) I would however take offence to having to read emails from every man and his dog advertising their services. People competing against each other. There is no competition for the Archives Office, but it is important for new researchers and those out of state and country to know where to access these records after all we are all on this list to try and find information about our convict pasts. Melissa
Listers I reiterate ... the topic of research fees is no longer open for discussion. Bright Blessings Sandie List Admin
