Hi, Listing again as new info has come to hand. A lot of these events took place in and around the New Norfolk area of Tas. Still searching for past info on James & Eliza Butler (nee Hornedge) who came to Tas in 1852. James was a Pensioner Guard on the Lord Dalhousie. I have discovered just recently that other than the two children I know about, Frederick b1852 and Charles b1858, it would appear that they had one (John), maybe two (Ann) and remote possibilty of three (Elizabeth) more children. John & Mary Anne Butler(Hill) marr1869, were seen as witnesses on Fredericks marriage to Margaret Hill in 1872. Going by the dates, John must have been born in England before the trip out. It would appear that Margaret Butler died shortly after her marriage to Frederick (drowned whilst boating on the Styx River) but still had time to have 4 children (Ann Ada, James Frederick, Margaret Jane & one un-named male). Frederick remarried in 1881 to Susan Clarke b1860. They had 10 children (Joseph, Frank, Frederick, Alfred, Minnie, Roy, Bert, Jessie, Edward & Julia). Shown as witnesses on Fredericks second marriage were Richard and Elizabeth Lillias (Butler). Elizabeth may not be a member of James' family but it is suspicious that she's a Butler, so I am hoping she is Fredericks sister?? I have also been informed that either the Clarkes or the Hills family mentioned here, are from convict stock. Don't have any more information on them. I have added the Heffernan family name because one of John and Mary Butlers 15 children, Mary Anne Butler b1873, married Thomas Heffernan b1866 and had three children; Edith, Thomas & Annie all born in New Norfolk. I am hoping that a Heffernan may see this and have some Butler info they can share. hopefully this mail is not too confusing and someone recognises something in here. kind regards phil b..... rainy qld..... researching: HEATHERS & BUTLERS
Hi Gwenda As far as I know there were no "marriages" between convicts and the Tasmanian Aboriginal people. There were relationships, however. Have you read books like "The Aboriginal Tasmanians" by Lyndall Ryan (Allen & Unwin; 1996)? For example, references were made to : p179 .. while the sealing women formed sexual relationships with the sealers, military, and convicts. p184 ... He [Robinson] had already encouraged the men to cut their hair, prevented the women from cohabiting with the convicts ... p189 ... and developing relations with the convicts and sealers. I think you will find the Tasmanian Aboriginal geneology fairly well documented. Especially due to the need, under Commonwealth government requirements, for proof of Aboriginality in order to receive benefits. Aboriginal people have a strong sense of family in identifying and most would know their geneology. You should be able to get in touch with one of the Aboriginal Resource Centres in Tasmania to find out more. Whilst the main concentration is on Aboriginal links they would also have records of who they married. The Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Tores Strait Islander Studies (AIATSIS) has a family history section and their on-line searches may also be of benefit. You would need to list the names of the Aboriginal people who were known to be in Tasmania at that time. These names are also well documented. You can reach AIATSIS at the following URL - http://www.aiatsis.gov.au/lbry/fmly_hstry/fmly_hstry_hm.htm Hope that is of some help. If you want to give me some more background to your query I might be able to help further. There were some marriages between the Tasmanian aboriginals and the english population and I have come across family history with photos etc somewhere. There were also alot of defacto relationships particulary with the sealers and remote members of the community. There may be some in the pioneer index. Many of the convicts had defacto relationships amongst themselves and male free men and convict girls as well. Often they were recognised as "wife" by the authorities at least as far as the convicts go as I have some examples. I wouldn't know how you could prove it. Paul they might appear in Government Gazettes, reports to the Lt Governor, reports from local magistrates etc. These types of records all belonged to the Convicts Department of Tasmania.... the archives office in Tasmania could advise search facilities.Newspapers often reported on these rewards as an incentive to other criminals who might be tempted to stray from the path of good ness <s> so they also are another source all the best Jenny Fawcett -----Original Message----- From: Catherine Prescott <[email protected]> To: [email protected] <[email protected]> Date: Thursday, 30 May 2002 18:36 Subject: Re: [TAS-CONVICTS] Rewards >Jenny: > >I also have a convict ancestor who was given a reward and gazetted.. > >> she was probably given a reward of £1 and the promise of a ticket of leave >> for having given some information against another convict, or etc, >> eg...publican selling out of hours...bushranger....escapee etc.......if it >> was gazetted then >> it made it into government records... > >Which government records are these? Hello all; I wonder if anyone has an understanding of the "Reward" system? I have an Ann TADMAN who absconded 1 Apr 1852 from Browns River On the 12 Apr 1852 she was sentenced to 3 months hard labour On the 17 Apr 1852 she was at "House of Correction" On 27 Apr 1852 there is an entry on her conduct sheet which reads "Gazetted. Reward £1." On 19 Jul 1853 the entry is "Will be recommended for a ticket of leave when reward is paid" She got ToL on 30 Aug 1853. Could anyone throw any light on how these Rewards worked? Did she have to pay some sort of fine or bond after absconding and being re-captured? Any thoughts welcome. Ian Preston Canberra
