Dear Sandi I completely agree with your policy on not advertising for paying clients on the mailing list, however the $1.10 fee that was asked for, is that charged per page by the Archives for a photocopy of their records. I have been fortunate enough to be able to visit the Archives myself when visiting Hobart, (an absolutely wonderful resource) but for those for whom this is impossible, it must be a wonderful service that Sue has offered to provide. She has not specifically asked to be paid for her services but obviously a donation to cover her costs eg parking, I am sure would be welcomed and would be at the discretion of the sender. I fail to see how this breaches the rules and would not like to see her / other listers punished for her efforts. I agree with Jenny and Ann as having no chance of getting to Hobart myself, Sue did wonders finding the people I wanted and getting their records without charging commercial fees, only her expenses. The line has to be drawn somewhere, I think we all agree, but Sue is doing it to help others who cannot get to Hobart. Barbara Sowter Queensland
With respect to the list -master, who does a wonderful and most welcome job, I hope I might be able to contribute another angle to this issue of advertising.... Given that Rootsweb are a VERY commercial concern, their objections might be seen to ensure that other's do not get a share of the market?. Given that people are usually charging minimal fees for any work undertaken ,(and from experience and in business terms these fees wouldn't come within a bulls roar of covering costs, time and etc).....it seems unfair that some gentle advertising is not a feasible consideration. The beauty of the net is that Genealogy is finally being brought out of the dark ages (and out of the financial monopoly of a former assured few) and it has been of enormous value to all. I respect that each list owner has the right to their own policies, and if it is that no advertising is allowed, then that is their right, as they bear the brunt of running their mailing list, including any costs and etc. But if we are imaginitive and foreseeing, then through mailing lists we have the opportunity to bring to all, the wealth of material that is available on convicts. I cannot get to Tasmania, and probably never will. I have little income and as I have spent the last five years researching a history of Port Fairy and given that all the settlers here were from Tas, I need to access records in Tasmania. I haven;t a hope in hades of affording full research fees, and I usually swap services where possible to obtain records I need. If it were not for those who let me know what they have, I couldn;t even get the material I need, as I am not a Proffessor Joe Bloggs with unlimited funding.! So perhaps' list owner's might consider a middle road policy on advertising, the how and why I am not familiar with but I do enjoy Genanz and Australia-l's liberal policies. yours Jenny Fawcett From: "Ann Hamilton" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, June 22, 2002 11:50 AM Subject: Re: [TAS-CONVICTS] Fees > Dear Sandi > I completely agree with your policy on not advertising for paying clients on > the mailing list, however the $1.10 fee that was asked for, is that charged > per page by the Archives for a photocopy of their records. That time again. Anyone wanting copies of VDL convict records, please contact me by Thursday next week, preferably with details of your convict. I completed about 40 of these over the June holidays so maybe there wont be many for next Saturday. Cost of $1.10 per photocopy and whatever else you want to pay for time and effort. Pay when record reaches you by your snail mail address. Convict details and snail mail address needed to get quick reply. Sue Wyatt [email protected] Great chat room for genealogy only www.justgen.com Please feel free to come and join us.

Listers, this is a reminder that the Rootsweb mailing lists are not for canvassing paying clients for research. Rootsweb policy is quite emphatic. Only one warning will be issued. Bright Blessings Sandie List Admin

Thank you Peter. Complaining about 'shabby treatment when the death sentence had been twice commuted on him ... I love it! I have received a reply to my query on the Norfolk Island Mailing List, which may be of interest to other listers. Apparently there are two books which list convicts on Norfolk Island, at least the first does, the second is being checked for me. Both are by Raymond Nobbs. "Norfolk Island and its First Settlement, 1788 - 1814" "Norfolk Island and its Second Settlement, 1825 - 1855" Regards Tony Lincolnshire, England

G'day, I've found a few similar cases in 1830s: they were sent to Norfolk Island, from Hobart. But I gather, short sentences were served in VDL. One character, William COMSTIVE (1792-1858) became quite an expert: 1820 convicted York; death; commuted to life 1821 arr VDL per "Lady Ridley" 1834 convicted Hobart; death; commuted to life 1834 Hobart to Sydney, per "Arab" 1834 to 1842 - on Norfolk Island 1842, one but not both, life sentences pardonned; other one not; - conveyed from NI to Sydney, NSW; arr just after transportation ended; - he was an anomaly in Sydney, and accommodation was short, so he was not detained, but was paid 1/5 (17 pence) per day to find his own accommodation & food. He wrote a letter of complaint about shabby treatment given to convicts in NSW. Peter THOMAS Darwin, Australia <[email protected]> -----Original Message----- From: Tony Flynn [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Saturday, 15 June 2002 23:31 To: [email protected] Subject: [TAS-CONVICTS] Re-transportation? Hi to the list. Could I ask the list. Would a transported convict be retransported if convicted in Tasmania, and if so, where to?? I appreciate that question isn't as clear as it could have been, so a bit of background. John Plowright was sentenced in England in 1836 to transportation for 7 years. After a year on the hulks, he arrived in Tasmania in Oct 1837 (Elphinstone 2). Whilst a prisoner, it appears there were a few months' additions to his sentence, but even so, he was given his Free Certificate in 1843. His Prisoner Record states, after mentioning Free Certificate, the following: 'Hobart Town ?26 May 1847 ?Jobe imprisoned in H M Gaol at H Town and kept to harsh for 2 yrs Transported for stg 2 cha.rs' There is no other entry after this. But on 5 Jul 1847, according to Hobart Gazette, he absconded from the Prisoner Barracks, Hobart. I am assuming he was eventually picked up, and perhaps because of 'escaping' was ??transported from Tasmania to ??? Sue Wyatt kindly sent me a whole batch of details. However, the only other reference found to date concerning a John Plowright is a marriage in 1851 to a Catherine Hedley - the convict permission to marry records John as FREE and Catherine as CADET2. But the age is wrong (28 and should be 32) and I'm not convinced that this is my John. Any advice, suggestions, guidance would be extremely welcome. Regards Tony England

Good Morning Listers As from today 10 June 2002 and over the next few days Rootsweb are moving their list servers and other equipment. When the time arrives to move the list servers, operations will cease. As a consequence there will be no mail received on the lists. Rootsweb do not expect to lose any messages during the shut down. The Message Boards are not expected to be affected, but the FTP will, so those people with web sites hosted by Rootsweb you will encounter times where you cannot access them. There will also be a be a period of time when the web sites will not be accessible. Bright Blessings Sandie List Admin My four grandparents family names that I am researching. IN ENGLAND.
