    1. [TAS-CONVICTS] Looping mail
    2. Hello listers We seem to be having a problem with 'looping email addresses'. If you have instructed one email address to forward to another, so on and so forth Rootsweb server can get a little bit ticklish and bounce the email address altogether. So.... if you have done anything like this, or similar it would be a good thing to change it. Also if you use hotmail.com or some such, storage space has been reduced and a full mailbox (including folders) will bounce your emails. Please keep a check on the total space used for your addresses. After three bounces back to the Rootsweb server the address is automatically unsubscribed. This has happened quite a lot over the last week or so. REMEMBER, IF YOU CHANGE SERVERS, UNSUBSCRIBE FROM YOU OLD SERVER AND THEN SUBSCRIBE AGAIN FROM YOUR NEW ONE. Bright Blessings everyone Sandie List administrator

    1. [TAS-CONVICTS] COLEMAN, George
    2. Carol Battishill
    3. Hello (again). I decided to resubmit my interest, just in case! My interest is with George COLEMAN, Convict Number 14732 born 1807/1808 in Hampshire, England. I believe George is my gt.gt.grandfather but until I am one hundred percent certain concerning his family background, I haven't claimed him as 'mine'. George was convicted at Winchester for crimes of robbery, machine breaking and sentenced to seven years' transportation to VDL. He arrived in Hobart 4 August 1831 on board the "Proteus" and is mentioned in Jill Chambers' book 'Hampshire Machine Breakers'. I've obtained copies of the English trials, shipping papers, etc. and the Archives Office, Tasmania has been very helpful with providing additional information. My question is - would records be available listing George's 'employers' between 1831 and his Free Pardon which was granted in February 1836? It's also believed George left Launceston in November 1838 on the vessel "Aquila", destination Port Phillip - are ship's passenger lists also recorded? A George COLMAN married Harriet WILSON in Geelong in August 1841 and settled in Buninyong (near Ballarat) where he worked for the Learmonth Brothers, became a landowner/farmer and died in 1891. I realise I have been fortunate to obtain almost all the available information on George COLEMAN but wonder if there's anymore?? Thanks, Carol from Lake Macquarie, New South Wales, Australia

    3. Hi Jeff, Fantastic!! My husbands 4th grt grandfather Thomas CRAWFORD was aboard the Southworth as a 19 yr old convict. The Old Bailey trial says he was 16 (he may have lied) in the January 1830 but his transportation papers in the same year say 19 ? Your Charles LEDGERWOOD and Thomas would no doubt have known each other !!!Thomas was from Curtain Rd Middlesex. He stole (supposedly as he denied it at his trial) 14lbs of candles. Could you see if he is mentioned please. Many many thanks for that. Can I help you in any way? I have a lot of cds. 1. [TAS-CONVICTS] 172 Years Ago Today
    2. Hi List On this day 172 years ago the SOUTHWORTH set sail for VDL with 18 year old Charles LEDGERWOOD and 159 other convicts on board. This is the story of that voyage as told by the Surgeon Superintendent. Journal of His Majesty's Convict Ship Southworth Alex. Stewart /6/ Surgeon Between the 24th June and 28th October 1830 On the 14th of June 1830, three days after my arrival in London from New South Wales, I was appointed to the Southworth Convict Ship, and joined her on the 24th then lying at Sheerness, having 160 Male Prisoners on board and ready for Sea. On the following day received dispatches for the Lieut. Governor of Van Diemens Land and sailed the morning of the 26th; In the evening the wind and tide being against us we came to an anchor in Margate Roads; the 27th again weighed and about noon anchored in the Downs. From this the Ship finally sailed on the 30th with a light breeze at E. b. S. On the 2nd day after being at sea the wind veered round to S.W. blowing strong with thick foggy weather and rain, the motion of the vessel now produced much Sea Sickness among the Guard and Convicts which with the wet state of the Decks and Prisons, from spray and rain, rendared (sic) them very uncomfortable. on the 16th July the weather cleared up with the wind at E.N.E. when we all soon recovered the effects of the former bad weather; by this time the Prisoners Irons were all taken off. On the 22nd having been three weeks at Sea and on Salt provisions. Lime Juice and Sugar were issued to the Guard and Convicts in the proportion of an Ounce of each, mixed in a Pint of water; the 26th the ship was becalmed off the Island of St Antonia, from this period till we crossed the line, which was on the 13th of August, the winds were very light and variable but the weather generally fine. On the 26th August the S. E. Trades failed us, in 30 S. Latit(it)ude when we had strong winds from the N. of E. with showers of Rain. 4th Sept. pass the Island of Tristan De Cunha, after this whilst running to the Eastward. between 37 and 43 S. latitudes, the winds were from the westward veering about from the North to South, generally blowing strong with a good deal of rain. so that the Decks and Prisons were very often wet, but every means were taken to keep the later as dry as possible by means of Swabbs and Swing stoves, and no very bad consequences followed;  On the 29th July on getting into warm weather the Prisoners Jackets, shoes and stocking were taken from them, and stowed away in dry casks and again issued to them on the 26th August on getting into colder weather; 22nd August commenced issuing Wine to the Prisoners in the proportion of a gil To each which I calculated would last them till about the time of our reaching Van Diemens Land. The Morning of the 19th Oct. the Southworth anchored at Hobart Town, during the passage we lost by Death one Convict, and two of the Guards wives were safely delivered each of a Son, who were vaccinated with the matter sent on board, but without effect; (signed) Alex. Stewart /6/ Surgeon Superintendent Southworth C. S. Transcribed from the AJCP film as written. I have a copy of Surgeon Stewart's sick list which gives details of the illness or injury that the convicts and crew suffered on the voyage. If your ancestor was on the Southworth let me know the name and I will see if he was mentioned. Regards Jeff Arnold

    3. Hello Sue, Could you look up records for the following please. Elizabeth SMITH b approx 1824-1827 arived 1844 on "Angelina" aged 20 = b 1824 She married William Jones 12/10/1846 in Hobart.(aged 22=b1824)They had a daughter Ellen Amelia Jones born 5/9/1847 .(a record of that birth could have vital info) Our ancestor was an Elizabeth JONES widow (no maiden name )who married Thomas Crawford 29/9/1853 (with no mention of dead husband's name)she was 26 =1827 . Our Elizabeth Crawford nee Jones died 9/1/1901 and was born according to cert. 1826. The only document I have is her marriage certificate to Thomas Crawford . A William Jones died 12/4/1853 which I am hoping was Elizabeth's husband as that would have been in timing with her marriage in sept 1853. So anything on this William Jones would be invaluable too please. There were 23 female convicts names Elizabeth Jones and more named Elizabeth SMITH which makes it very hard, Copies of anything you may think will help would be fantastic . I can send you a cheque or transfer monies via my Suncorp /Metway account . My address is 30 Maranoa Drive Logan Village Qld. 4207 Ph/fax 07 55 463 612. 2. Alan Crawford
    3. Firstly having been a member of other Lists I can understand our Administrators apprehension. We all know that Sue is really offering a free service to Listers and only seeking compensation for incidentals she incurs such as photostating. No one knows who is on the other end of a request and Sue is placing a lot of trust in those who who do so by not requesting money up front. Certainly not a commercial proposition. She is certainly not touting for business and I would make the same request for compensation for these incidental costs if it was me. If the present arrangements are not kosher perhaps as an alternative Sue, should simply mention that she is visiting the Archives and that she is prepared to do lookups which should be made to her off line. Any requests to Sue can be submitted and arranged directly off list to her. What occurs after that is between the 'requester' and the 'requestee' so to speak. Our administrator has a job to do and this method would avoid any future embarrassment and arguments as to what constitutes a "fee". Regards Alan Crawford Canberra - Australia

    2. John David Rees
    3. Dear Sue, I want to extend my knowledge of my family tree - one Great-Great-Great-Grandfather was convict 31246 ,Benjamin Griffiths who was convicted of murder and demolishing a house at the Pembroke Assizes and sentenced on July 19th 1840 to life imprisonment; he was transported to VDL aboard HMS Tortoise which sailed from Plymouth on October 26th 1841, arriving in VDL on February 19th 1842. I would like to know the circumstances of the offences for which he was convicted e.g. was he involved in the Rebecca Riots? I would also like to learn when, where and to whom he was assigned in VDL, how he gained a ticket of leave by December 1850 and why he was allowed to have his wife and children brought to VDL. I believe they arrived on the "Ocean Chief" on March 25th 1855. -one of my Great-Grandmothers was Elizabeth McCarthy (convict number 91495) a housemaid and laundress tried and convicted of cow stealing at Waterford, Ireland. She was sentenced to to ten years gaol and was transported to VDL in the "Midlothian" which arrived in VDL February 24th 1853. Family legend says that Great-Grandfather William Charles Stubbings, who was farming at Sandfly, heard of the arrival of the "Midlothian"in the Franklin river, jumped on his horse and went in search of a bride whom he married the next day - recent research by a relative indicated that Eliza was assigned to Thos. Madely of Franklin, November 7th 1853, married to to Wlliam Stubbings at St Marys Church Franklin on March 15th 1854 and received a ticket-of-leave on October 20th 1857. I would welcome any additional information about if it is available from the records. -we don't know how or when William Charles Stubbings came to VDL, nor do we know about the origin of another Great-Grandfather, David Rees, who was recorded as a shepherd, labourer, farmer born in 1827. He married Ann Catherine Oliver in St. Thomas Church Avoca on November 22nd 1854. I wonder if he could have been convict 64197 who sailed from London on the "Gilmore" on April 16th 1843. I would like to have a copy of his convict records and any surgeon's reports from the relevant voyages of the "Tortoise", "Midlothian" and "Gilmore". Given that Rootsweb are a VERY commercial concern, their objections might be seen to ensure that other's do not get a share of the market?. Given that people are usually charging minimal fees for any work undertaken ,(and from experience and in business terms these fees wouldn't come within a bulls roar of covering costs, time and etc).....it seems unfair that some gentle advertising is not a feasible consideration. The beauty of the net is that Genealogy is finally being brought out of the dark ages (and out of the financial monopoly of a former assured few) and it has been of enormous value to all. I respect that each list owner has the right to their own policies, and if it is that no advertising is allowed, then that is their right, as they bear the brunt of running their mailing list, including any costs and etc. But if we are imaginitive and foreseeing, then through mailing lists we have the opportunity to bring to all, the wealth of material that is available on convicts. I cannot get to Tasmania, and probably never will. I have little income and as I have spent the last five years researching a history of Port Fairy and given that all the settlers here were from Tas, I need to access records in Tasmania. I haven;t a hope in hades of affording full research fees, and I usually swap services where possible to obtain records I need. If it were not for those who let me know what they have, I couldn;t even get the material I need, as I am not a Proffessor Joe Bloggs with unlimited funding.! So perhaps' list owner's might consider a middle road policy on advertising, the how and why I am not familiar with but I do enjoy Genanz and Australia-l's liberal policies. yours Jenny Fawcett From: "Ann Hamilton" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, June 22, 2002 11:50 AM Subject: Re: [TAS-CONVICTS] Fees > Dear Sandi > I completely agree with your policy on not advertising for paying clients on > the mailing list, however the $1.10 fee that was asked for, is that charged > per page by the Archives for a photocopy of their records. 3. Hello Everyone, I'm reading a book called "Penal Peninsula" and having recently noticed postings related to the wreck of the Hibernia I thought the following may be of interest to someone: "When he (Charles O'Hara Booth) learned that the men employed in the shoemaker's shop were doing private work when the overseer was not looking, he sought and obtained the appointment of a superintendent of shoemakers, the first holder of the position being James SLY, a survivor from the wreck of the "Hibernia" who took up his position in June 1833". Cheers, Marg Wise.

May I point out that even though Rootsweb may be a 'commercial' concern in one way or another, the information is always provided free through the archives searches. Additionally, I live in Western Australia and when it comes to services and products of any kind we are more disadvantaged that anyone... and for those who don't know, Perth is the remotest capital city in the world. This means we pay more postage etc than others. I have some 150 sets of grandparents in the trees of my four grandparents, some lines are back to 1500's and all my information has been compiled through extending my network of researchers of similar interests. Aside from that ... there are numerous professional genealogist who subscribe to this list who never tell anyone they are, nor do they canvas clients on list. I also point out that from the 50+ lists that I maintain around the globe, the only two I have encounter this discussion are the two Tasmanian ones!!! I also might point out that both these lists have people on the reject list for flaming me. Now, the Rootsweb policy IS the policy and on my lists we stick to it. NO prices of services are discussed nor do genealogists professional or otherwise canvas ONLIST clients in any way, shape or form, nor are prices for products/services given. Quite simple. And like ALL things, if you abide by the guidelines things progress extremely well and everyone is happy. THE TOPIC IS NO LONGER OPEN FOR DISCUSSION. Good luck with your research everyone. 3. Hello Lorraine, In my research I came across a Henry CLACK who married Mary Ann PARSONS at Sorell in 1834. Their children were: Benjamin Henry CLACK born at Sorell in 1835. William CLACK born at sorell in 1837. Sarah Ann CLACK born at Sorell in 1839. Emma CLACK born at Hobart in 1841. Unfortunately, I don't have any more information about Henry as I was more interested in Mary Ann PARSONS. Apparently, Henry died because Mary Ann PARSONS, widow, aged 31 married William Gard at St. George's Church, Battery Point on 26 august, 1848. I am of the opinion that Mary Ann was the widow of Henry CLACK. I believe that Benjamin and William took the surname "CLARK". I also believe that at least one of the children, Sarah Ann took the name Gard when she married but I am not absolutely sure of this - I would need to check the marriage register which I haven't yet done! Hope this information doesn't put a spanner in the works. Cheers, Marg Wise.

    3. Dear Sue Just a quick line to register my family's sincere appreciation for the tremendous service you provide to all researchers asking for your detailed assistance/ research at the Tas Archives. The cost of photocopying does not constitute advertising , and is only the recovery of your out of pocket expenses , which non of us would expect not to pay. Thanks again and please keep up the good work. 3. Hello Sue, Would appreciate info on John Kimber - Dromedary - arrived 28/1/1820. What crime he committed. Also would it be possible for any info on his wife Caroline who died 1830 and daughter Maria. Maria supposedly married Henry Clack (died Melbourne 1860) . Was Henry a convict. On his death certificate he lived in Tasmania 18 yrs, NSW 2 yrs and Vic 10 yrs. I know that there were children born in Vic in 1852 and 1854. Henrys father was James Clack, mother Mary Ann, maiden name unknown and he was 54 yrs old when he died. Also Henry was 30 when he married Maria (info on death cert) I have seen that a Henry Clack married in Tasmania in 1835 and had a child Benjamin Henry and others. These children are not listed on the death certificate so I believe that there was another Henry Clack in Tasmania. My address is: 27 Heavey St, Werrington NSW 2747 regards, Lorraine Moorcroft -----Original Message----- From: Sue Wyatt <[email protected]> To: [email protected] <[email protected]> Date: Friday, June 21, 2002 5:43 PM Subject: [TAS-CONVICTS] Archive visit in Tasmania again >That time again.
