Hello all Perhaps someone with more knowledge of convict records can help me. There are no details of death for Mary Lewis my Great-great Grandmother. Mary was convicted & sent to Tasmania per Hindostan 1839. After serving her sentence she married Samuel Sargent in 1845. They produced 6 children between 1846 & 1855. There is a notation on Mary's convict records stating "Cert to herself 12 August 1856". Is anyone able to tell me (a novice at this game) what that statement may mean. Are any of you out there? We have the birth certificate of a daughter (born in Victoria), and this states that Harriet was born in Oatlands Tas, and was 29 in August 1882. This is a general mailout to all of the lists that I administer. It seems to be that for whatever reason, some subscribers have taken to 'looping' their subscription address. This means that they are forwarding mail from their subscribed address to another one, then from that one to another, and so on. This 'looping' causes major problems and mail bounces all over the place, it means that for a busy list you are very likely to get unsubbed quite quickly. It also seems to be that some subscribers servers are detecting this 'looping' and Daemon is intercepting and rejecting some of their mail thinking that it is spam. There has also been a tendency of late of spammers to subscribe to a list under one address and 'looping' it back to several in an attempt to spam a list. This is NOT NICE. Any subscriber that I think is resorting to this technique will be placed on the reject list. I might point out here that the headers of emails identify the server as well as the addresses through which mail is 'looped'. As of today (16th August) any address that bounces messages back as a result of 'looping' will be automatically unsubscribed. Another thing that can cause a problem for the list is the 'spam filter' that some subscribers have taken to downloading off the net over the passed few months. The irony of this is that that same spam protector the 'spams' you address book which includes mailing lists... I have made the decision that any subscribed address that posts a message to the list notifying subscribers that they have a spam filter attached to their mailbox will be not be permitted to post messages to the list. May I make the suggestion that if some people wish to protect their privacy by 'looping' from one address to the other that you think about using a free web based mail address in preference to your own personal private address. This will also assist in reducing the amount of spam mail that you receive in that inbox. It is unfortunate that I now have to take this kind of action and it is one of several measures that I have had to take in the last few weeks to reduce the huge amount of bounced emails to my mailbox. Hi I am new to the list. I am looking for further information on Mary Camm (nee Barnett) who died in Hobart in April 1827(she arrived in Tas from Ireland on the Alexander II). Her husband was James Camm (convict - involved with seizure of the Brig Cypress) hanged in 1832. Mary left 3 small sons, William, Richard and James. Hi Valerie, The conduct record will often give where they worked but much of it is written using abbreviations relating to people and places around Tasmania. Otherwise if they married while still convicts they would have had to get permission to marry. These cards are at the archives and are gradually being put on the internet as well. Any BDM of children in Tasmania will be found in the Pioneer Index also held at the archives. There are also general index cards which relate to some names in the colony, often giving inquests and if children enrolled in certain schools etc. It is also a good idea to ask the archivists if they have a family file folder on the surname you are researching. If they do, this often has a lot of the above info already on it. I go to the archives most Thursday evenings to do convict lookups for people, so if you want some help, please contact me by email.
