    3. Meryl Thanks for the information on the ship Mona I will try and get my hands on a copy of the book mentioned. Are the convict's named in the book? I would be very interested to find out the names of the other 3 convicts, perhaps their 'misdemeanors' were connected. 1. [TAS-CONVICTS] PRESNELL
    2. Norman W. Long
    3. Name: William Presnell (Prisnoll, Presnal, etc) DOB: c1765, England (No records found) Offence: 3 counts of cattle stealing and 1 of horse stealing. Tried: Essex Lent Assizes 1797, with Simon Moulds. Transported: Barwell 1798, to Sydney. Sent to Norfolk Island abt 1800-1801 (record not found). Sent to VDL on City of Edinburgh, 1808. Spouse: Ann Fowler, "married" Norfolk Island (record not found). Children: Elizabeth b. 1802, Thomas b. c1804, Sarah b. c1808. There are also some cryptic references to another William and a Joseph in Norfolk Island, and a James Fowler christened in Hobart in 1811. Occupation: In VDL, William was a successful business man in and around Hobart doing, among other things, carting, brewing, running the Eagle Tavern in Argyle St, farming, etc. There is also a possibility that William was married previously in England. Several of his relatives, incuding his mother, came to VDL around 1820 to 1840. One of these was a William Presnell jnr, who may have been a son from an earlier marriage. I would be very interested in hearing from anyone who has any Presnells at all in their tree, or anyone who has any information at all, as I am very keen to find out more about William and his background, and also what, exactly, the connections to the other Presnells were. Kind regards, Sharon, Melton, Victoria.

Hi June, According to the Convict CDROM there were 34 males by name of Townsend who arrived in VDL as convicts. None had the name Job. Plenty of James and John though. Next time I am in the archives (probably Thursday evening to do convict lookups) I will check in the permission to marry cards under the wife's name in case he was one of the above Townsends. There is mail from those programs bouncing all over the place. Whether or not it is the filter I don't know. It is also advisable to switch to the digest mode for these mail programs so that you can keep a better track of addresses to put on the accept address list.
